Palworld: Failed to connect to server?
If joining your Palworld server fails, your save is not automatically corrupted. What matters is when the error occurs: is the server missing from the list, does the password prompt fail, or does the loading process abort later?
Do not delete any world or player files for troubleshooting. Note the full message and first check whether all players are affected or only one person. The following sections help you narrow down the cause; they are not a guarantee that a specific message always has the same cause.
The server does not appear in the list
In your server panel, check that your Palworld server is running and has finished starting. Then search again using the configured server name. Also check the selected server category and any active filters.
A running server is not automatically registered in the community list. In Palworld, this registration is controlled by the launch parameter -publiclobby. For Xbox and PS5, community access is required. See the Crossplay guide and Pocketpair on launch arguments.
If the corresponding setting is not available in your server panel, ask support to check the community registration. Switching the save does not fix a missing registration.
Direct connect or timeout
Copy the address again from your current server panel. Pay particular attention to the part after the colon: it must be the game port of your instance, not an FTP, RCON, or API port.
Then test, in order:
- Is the server still shown as running, even immediately after the failed attempt?
- Can a second person join using the same address?
- Does only direct connect fail, or also the path via the community list?
- Did the problem start only after an update or a configuration change?
If all players are affected, start with server status and address. If only one person is affected, compare their platform, game version, and join method with a working client. A timeout alone proves neither a server outage nor an issue on the player side.
Steam works, Xbox or PS5 does not
Here, check platform allowance and community access separately. The current configuration uses CrossplayPlatforms, not the older AllowConnectPlatform. The Windows version from the Microsoft Store counts as Xbox for platform allowance.
Do not change the port or the save on a hunch. First align the allowed platforms and join method.
The password is not accepted
Use the server password. The admin password is for administrative rights after joining and does not replace it. Check case sensitivity and any accidentally copied spaces.
If the password was just changed, verify that the change was saved and the server was restarted afterwards. Share the current password directly with your group. Do not publish it along with a support request.
The error started after an update
Note the displayed server and client versions. Check whether an update is pending for the affected platform, and fully quit the game before trying again. After a completed update, cleanly restart the server as well.
If you use local client mods, try joining with an unmodified client. Server mods are not supported on our Linux servers. The difference is explained in Palworld mods at 4Netplayers.
Loading fails after a savegame import
Stop further experiments and back up the current state before replacing any files. Using the upload guide, verify that the entire world folder is in the correct location and that DedicatedServerName points to this folder.
A prompt to create a character is a different symptom than a connection failure. It can indicate a missing association of the previous character. Do not hastily create replacement characters for the whole group; first check the source and scope of the transfer.
If a known working state exists, you can restore it following the backup guide. The untouched backup remains available as a fallback.
These details help support
Send the configuration ID, platform, client version, exact error message, and the time of the attempt. Add whether other players are connected and what change occurred immediately beforehand. A screenshot may show the error message, but not passwords or FTP credentials.
With this information, the search can be narrowed down to registration, network access, configuration, or save state, instead of repeating the same restart without new insights.
