The Deep North is Valheim’s newest and final biome to discover on your journey through the game’s world. It’s bitterly cold here, and you’ll be trudging through snow just to reach your destination. Enemies are rare, but extremely strong! For progression, you still need to explore every corner of the biome and collect all the key resources so you can craft new armor, weapons, and foods later on. Before you visit the Deep North, you should prepare properly and know what’s coming. We’ve already created a guide for all the other biomes, and of course we’re continuing with the Deep North!
Valheim Deep North Guide: Biome overview, preparation and gear

As the name suggests, you find the biome in the north of the map. It’s the counterpart to the Ashlands. You can actually reach it without a special ship, but you need to watch out for ice floes. There are a few other precautions you should take.
Have these things with you or done:
- armor that protects you against frost
- a mead of frost resistance
- a very good weapon from the Ashlands
- ideally both inventory upgrades from Haldor
- the grappling hook from the Mistlands
- the Eternal Pyre crafted from Fader’s loot, to produce embers
- place a portal in your base and bring one with you
You’ll be even better prepared if you’re not traveling alone. With us, you can rent a Valheim server as your own game server right at the launch of version 1.0 and play with friends. We recommend that everyone be as well equipped as possible to survive the harsh biome.
Valheim Deep North resources: Ice, timber, frost cores and bloodgold
With a range of new crafting recipes, it’s no surprise you’ll find many new materials in the Deep North. Expand your arsenal of recipes and see what the biome has to offer! Some items are only found in the new dungeons.
- Ice: You can mine it directly on the coast; it’s important for many recipes and also for crafting the new weapons with liquid ice.
- Timber: A new wood type in the North that unlocks new building options.
- Frost cores: Found in the Winding Tunnels; needed for the new Frost Forge and the smelter.
- Glowing larva: Lets you craft a hooded lantern.
- Petrified tissue: The ore of the Deep North. Only dropped by Rotten Trolls when detonated with ember charges, and can be smelted into bloodgold.
- Bloodgold: The metal you can smelt from petrified tissue. Required for many recipes.
Valheim Deep North enemies and creatures: Elk, Elaking, Rotten Troll

Of course, the Deep North has its share of monsters and wildlife. You’ll encounter them much less often, but they are far stronger! They drop important materials you need for crafting.
- Elk: Large, aggressive animals. You can also tame them and use them as mounts. Drop resources like meat, hide, and sinews.
- Barka: Strangely frozen trees that drop frozen twigs for weapons. Best fought with an axe.
- Elaking: Goat-like monsters that walk on two legs. Especially important to kill because they drop a mold for a key you’ll need later.
- Eyeless: White, long-clawed monsters reminiscent of bats. They also drop the key mold.
- Fallen Warrior: Can be summoned at specific locations. Important for weapon upgrades, as they drop Frostfire Essences and Thunderblood Essences.
- Rotten Troll: A gigantic troll you need to fight and then detonate for bloodgold.
- Witches: A sorceress that spawns as part of Jotun invasions. Fight her with fire.
- Krigen: The counterpart to the witch; fights with sword and shield, and sometimes with an axe.
- Seals: Cute, peaceful animals along the coast. Sought after for their blubber and fur.
Valheim Deep North food and farming: Ingredients and best recipes

In this icy cold, the right food is essential. You can actually find four new ingredients: lingonberries, Poteitr (potatoes), kale, and oats. You can only find the berries in the wild, but you can farm the other three ingredients in your fields.
Dishes for HP:
- Fried seal bacon: A simple meat recipe for +60 HP.
- Grilled elk meat: A bit better and tastier, with +80 HP.
- Smoked elk meat: Can only be made with the cauldron’s new smoker upgrade, but gives +105 HP.
- Meat in Bread: A kind of döner kebab, gives a full 110 HP and is one of the best foods.
- Seal meat soup: Just as nourishing as Meat in Bread, but with different ingredients.
Dishes for Stamina:
- Kale chips: A great snack for +105 Stamina.
- Lingonberry juice: Just as good as the chips, only in tasty juice form.
- Oat milk: Warming oat milk that gives you +110 Stamina.
- Oat pancakes: A more complex recipe for hearty pancakes with +115 Stamina.
- Pancakes: Sweet pancakes that are just as effective as the oat ones.
- Oat porridge: Arguably the best food in the game, giving you 39 HP, 115 Stamina, and 85 Eitr at the same time. And it’s not even hard to make.
Dishes for Eitr:
- Smoked fish: Tasty fish for +95 Eitr.
- Baked Poteitr: A baked potato for Valheim mages that gives you +100 Eitr.
- Meatballs and Poteitr: A hearty dish for +105 Eitr.
- Fish soup: Just as nourishing with +105 Eitr, but with different ingredients.
Valheim Deep North POIs and dungeons: Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla

While exploring the new biome, you’ll also find many interesting places you should definitely investigate. Most are important for your progression and bring you ever closer to Valheim’s end. As always, there’s a boss fight in the Deep North, but we’ll look at that separately. It’s significantly harder than anything you’ve faced so far, and we don’t want to spoil the end of the game.
- Memorial: Stone formations where you can summon fallen warriors with memorial coal.
- Abandoned villages: Locations with more or fewer houses and lots of loot. Often deserted.
- Winding Tunnels: You’ll find the entrance in large abandoned houses. The tunnels plunge deep into the earth, with Elakings and Eyeless, but also valuable loot like molds, frost cores, and glowing larva.
- Mörkhalla: Large stone structures you can only enter with a key. The final dungeon in the game, where it’s best to bring the grappling hook. This is where you can start the Jotun invasions.
Conclusion: Master the Deep North in Valheim and reach the final boss
As you can see, despite the cold there’s a lot to discover in the Deep North. Some truly tough enemies await you, but you’ll need to face them and gather their resources. Along the way you’ll find new seeds to expand your food options. Later, once you’ve geared up with new items, you can venture into the new dungeons and hunt for even stronger foes. In the end, the final boss awaits with a challenging fight — conquer it, and you’ve truly mastered Valheim!
