On September 9, 2026, it’s finally happening! Valheim will launch its full version, wrapping up years of development. The update focuses on the new and final biome, the Deep North. The game will also receive an official ending, making it fully playable from start to finish. But that’s not all: the developers have planned many other improvements. With version 1.0, the game should run as smoothly as possible. That includes several quality-of-life features, tweaks to existing systems, and likely some performance improvements. Here’s what’s already known and what you can look forward to in September.

Valheim 1.0 update: Deep North biome and bitter cold

Valheim Deep North biome with ice and snow

The biggest change in the update is, of course, the new biome. Far to the north, you’ll dive into the deep, frigid cold, with everything that entails. Encounter new creatures, gather materials, and try to survive the harsh environment. You should only enter this region after the Ashlands, but you won’t need a special ship to sail those waters.

The sea will be dotted with ice floes you can walk on. On land, you’ll have to trudge through snow to reach your goals. You’ll once again find dungeons and structures to loot. So far, tunnel systems and abandoned villages are known. Dress warmly and be ready for anything.

You do not need to create a new world for the update. Even if you run a server, you can keep playing there and enjoy the new content. And if you’re still looking, you can rent a Valheim server from us and jump into the update with friends in September! Discover unknown snowy realms together and stay up to date with our blog posts. However, starting a completely new world is what the devs primarily recommend.

We won’t explain every new aspect in detail—some things are still secret or meant to be a surprise. Once the update drops, we’ll take a closer look at the new biome as well. If you want to learn more about other regions, we’ve got guides for those too!

Valheim Deep North: new wildlife and monsters

As in every region, the Deep North will feature new creatures. Based on various previews, these appear less frequently but are bigger and tougher. This sets it apart from the Ashlands and creates a distinctly lonely experience. Sooner or later, though, you’ll have to fight and face some serious challenges. Particularly large bosses are likely waiting for you as well.

  • Elk: Large, fast, and strong animals. Can be ridden. Will provide important materials you’ll need to collect.

  • Seals: Live on beaches and drop their pelts and blubber.

  • Elaking: A hostile creature, similar to other biome-specific monsters. Carries a lantern and comes out at night.

  • Eyeless: A monster from the first dungeon.

  • Barka: Reminiscent of the Elder from the Black Forest, a frozen, tree-like creature.

  • Gammeltroll: Likely one of the largest enemies in the game, a massive ice troll.

Valheim 1.0 endgame weapons and armor

You can also look forward to new weapons and armor pieces! As before, there will be three armor sets: light, heavy, and magical. Used properly, these will also protect you from the cold. Learn more about the existing armor sets in our article (Valheim armor: All sets, biomes, and set bonuses at a glance) .

For weapons, there will be a Northern variant for each type. The new Bloodgold ore will likely be used here. Completely new weapons are also coming, such as mage staves with lightning, defense, and animal summoning. There will also be shields you can upgrade.

New resources, food, and crafting in the Deep North

The Deep North will bring many new items as well. These include lingonberries you can pick from bushes. There will also be a new crop: kale. Keep an eye out for the new Timber wood, and try to find the new Bloodgold. Most creatures will also drop new materials you’ll likely need for crafting. Casting molds will be important, allowing you to craft the new weapons.

Valheim 1.0: more changes and new features

While the update focuses on the new biome, the devs have also teased a few other changes. It’s worth starting a fresh playthrough to experience these from the beginning. Otherwise, you might only notice some features in passing—or miss them entirely.

  • Building: New materials bring new building pieces. You can construct steep roofs, drawbridges, items made of ice, and several new workbenches. These include upgrades for the forge and the cauldron.

  • Alternative biomes: Older regions will occasionally get a new look if you travel far enough. Discover birch forests, clear-cut fir forests, or blood swamps. According to the devs, this feature will be expanded after 1.0.

  • Inventory: The devs say there will be a solution to limited inventory space. Details are still unknown, but it will be tied to defeating bosses.

  • Grappling hook: A new tool you’ll likely unlock in the Mistlands. Especially handy on hilly terrain.

  • Hammer upgrade: The build menu is being reworked and adjusted to make searching for items easier.

Conclusion on Valheim 1.0’s full release in September 2026

In the Deep North, you’ll explore a completely new landscape with fresh wildlife and monsters, plus lots of new items. You’ll also likely be able to officially finish the game, giving Valheim a fitting conclusion after around five years. More improvements and updates are planned as well, so don’t worry—Valheim isn’t over yet. What those post-1.0 updates will look like isn’t known. For now, let’s look forward to version 1.0 and everything that comes with it!
