Installing Mods in StarBound

In this article, we will describe how you can install mods on your StarBound server.

Tip: We recommend using an FTP program like Filezilla.

Subscribing to Mods

  1. First, you need to subscribe to the mods you want to use on Steam.
Simply access the mod and click on Subscribe.
  2. Once you have subscribed to the desired mods, you need to start your game at least once.
This is necessary for the mods to be downloaded.
  3. Now open the following directory on your computer:
    ../Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/211820/
You will find this directory on the same hard drive where you have installed the game.
  4. You should now see many numbered folders. These folders contain your mods.
The name of the folder is the respective WorkshopID of the mod.
  5. Open the first folder, which should contain the following file: contents.pak.
Rename the file to, for example, WorkshopID.pak or Modname.pak.
Important: Choose a name that is easy for you to identify.
  6. Copy the renamed file to a separate directory.
  7. Now open the next Workshop folder and rename the contents.pak.
  8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 until each contents.pak has been renamed and copied.
  9. Now copy all the mods to the game directory: ../Steam/steamapps/common/Starbound/mods

Important: Every player must have the same mods installed that are being used on the server.
Otherwise, these players will not be able to join the server.

Tip: Zip your mods and upload them to a platform like DropBox.
You can then share the DropBox link with your friends, and they only need to extract the mods and copy them to the mods folder.

Uploading Mods

  1. Stop your server. The status of your server must be Server not running!
  2. Connect to your FTP program with the Upload-FTP.
You can find the login details in the FTP overview when you click on FTP.
  3. Upload your mods to the following directory:
    ConfigID/mods
Note: You can find the ConfigID or Configuration ID for your server on our website under Gameserver.
If your ConfigID is, for example, 123456, it would look like this: /123456/mods
  4. Once all the mods have been uploaded, start your server.
