Set roles and passwords on your Enshrouded server
On an Enshrouded server, roles define who can do what. Each role has its own password. The password a player uses to join determines which permissions they get on the server. This lets you give your closest players full build permissions, while guests can just look around.
Where to find the roles
The roles are in the userGroups section of the enshrouded_server.json file.
- Stop your Enshrouded server in the customer panel.
- In Advanced Mode, open the
enshrouded_server.jsonfile. - Find the
userGroupssection. Each role appears in its own block with curly braces.
Role structure
An entry looks like this, for example:
{
"name": "Friend",
"password": "YourPassword",
"canKickBan": false,
"canAccessInventories": true,
"canEditBase": true,
"canExtendBase": true,
"reservedSlots": 0
}
The most important fields:
name: Name of the role, for exampleAdmin,Friend, orGuest.password: The password players use to join with this role. Each role needs its own password.canKickBan: Players in this role can kick and ban other players.canAccessInventories: Players in this role can open chests and storage in bases.canEditBase: Players in this role can build and demolish in existing bases.canExtendBase: Players in this role can extend bases.reservedSlots: Number of slots reserved for this role, even if the server is otherwise full.
If your file contains another field that is not listed here, leave it unchanged.
Customize roles
- Change the passwords and permissions of the roles as you wish. Only assign the Admin role to players you trust.
- Save the file and start the server again.
- Give each player the password for the role they should have.
Validate JSON syntax
A missing comma or quotation mark in enshrouded_server.json can prevent the server from starting. Carefully review the file after editing, for example with a JSON validator.
Other settings in the same file, such as difficulty, are explained in the guide Change game settings.
