Valheim is divided into several biomes that you can visit one by one. Each one is visually and mechanically distinct, so you’ll rarely see overlap in resources or monsters. Every area has its purpose and introduces new materials to work with. The Meadows are the first region you’ll explore in Valheim. Learn the game’s basics there and discover everything the lush grasslands and forests have to offer. Of course, a boss awaits at the end, and you’ll need to defeat it to progress. This guide covers everything important about the Meadows in Valheim.

Valheim Meadows biome overview and getting started

Valheim Meadows biome overview with meadows streams and spawn area

At first glance, the Meadows feel very calm and peaceful. You spawn in a mixed forest with beautiful meadows and gentle streams. There are few threats that can really harm you. Nowhere is completely safe, but most monsters here are weak and shouldn’t be a big problem. Meadows stretch from the spawn point out to roughly 5,100 meters, though they’re often intersected by other biomes.

In multiplayer, you’ll always start in the Meadows and can get familiar with Valheim there. Rent a Valheim server and use our guide as a companion to make sure you don’t miss a thing! You and your friends can learn the basics and maybe even build your first small base.

Valheim Meadows gathering resources and early recipes

Because the Meadows are your first biome in Valheim, you’ll find mainly essential resources here. Stock up well to unlock your first recipes. Later you’ll build on these foundations and upgrade your tools.

  • Wood: Gathered from branches on the ground or by felling beech trees.
  • Fine wood: From birch and oak, but only with a Bronze axe (or better).
  • Stone: Found everywhere on the ground.
  • Flint: Along shorelines; an important resource for improved tools.
  • Dandelion: Yellow flowers you can pick. Used for cooking and mead.
  • Leather scraps: Dropped by boars; vital for many tools and weapons.
  • Deer hide: Dropped by deer; the base for early armor.
  • Resin: Dropped by Greylings or from trees; a basic crafting resource.

The Meadows aren’t uninhabited, but you won’t face many large or powerful monsters. With a rudimentary weapon, you should be able to defend yourself just fine. Later, once you’ve found more biomes and defeated bosses, more enemies will appear. For now, we’ll focus on creatures that spawn here from the start. Many of these mobs are most common in the Meadows.

  • Deer: Peaceful and skittish; a bow is recommended.
  • Boars: Will attack, but can also be tamed.
  • Necks: Odd four-eyed water lizards that drop tails when killed.
  • Greylings: Twig-like creatures found throughout the Meadows.
  • Draugr: Spawn only in their villages. Avoid at first—they hit very hard. They’re more common in the Swamp, where you can fight them more effectively later.

Valheim Meadows foods and the best early buffs

Valheim Meadows foods mushrooms berries honey and meat

In Valheim, foods grant different buffs, and you should take advantage of them. You’ll learn this in your first hours, as the Meadows offer a balanced selection of foods. This teaches you how to use food effectively and pick the best options for your needs. Some ingredients are required for more complex recipes you’ll make later in the game. Make a note of where to find each ingredient.

  • Mushrooms: Picked from the ground; balanced stats and always handy.
  • Raspberries: Collected from bushes; primarily restore stamina.
  • Honey: A much better stamina source; you’ll need to farm it with beehives.
  • Neck tail: A simple meat that grants more health.
  • Boar meat: Grill it to boost your HP. Better than neck tails.
  • Deer meat: Roast it over a cooking station. The best Meadows food—lots of health and a bit of stamina.

Valheim Meadows structures, loot, and points of interest

Valheim Meadows structures villages treasure and Viking grave

You’re probably not the first soul to land in Valheim. Here and there you’ll find structures that may hide a few secrets. In the Meadows these are modest—mainly scattered treasure chests with rare resources inside.

  • Abandoned villages: Small, deserted hamlets with one or more houses. May include fields, which is handy. A good source of beehives and honey.
  • Draugr villages: Larger settlements with wooden palisades and multi-story houses. Inhabited by Draugr you should avoid early on. They’re uncommon but dangerous.
  • Viking grave: An elongated stone formation. Can only be dug up after the boss. Contains a few rare treasure chests.

Valheim boss Eikthyr summoning, tactics, and rewards

Valheim boss Eikthyr fight at the ritual altar

Each Valheim biome has its own boss. Defeat it to earn key items or materials that advance your progression. In the Meadows, you can summon Eikthyr with two deer trophies. It’s a mystical creature with an electrically charged rack of antlers.

For the fight, gear up and bring everything the Meadows offer. Use a shield to block attacks and reduce damage. With a bow, you can keep your distance and whittle the boss down safely. Hide behind the altar stones when Eikthyr unleashes a large area attack.

After the battle you’ll receive an Eikthyr trophy and hard antler. The latter is exactly what you need to progress, as it lets you craft an Antler pickaxe. You’ll need it to mine copper and tin.

Conclusion on the Valheim Meadows biome

Even though the Meadows feel mostly peaceful, stay alert. Gather key resources to learn the game’s fundamentals and to craft tools and weapons. Roam the gentle meadows and forests, find berries and mushrooms, or take down your first monsters. Only after you’ve covered the basics do we recommend tackling Eikthyr. Later, you can always return to the Meadows for ingredients, to clear Draugr villages, or to build a base.
