Battles in Palworld are a tactical affair. You need to combine attacks and dodges to defeat your opponent efficiently. It isn’t always about direct damage—small advantages often decide the fight. That’s where status effects come in, letting you tag enemies and restrict them deliberately. Every element except Neutral has an associated status effect. They work differently and influence not only your opponent, but also your overall game plan.

Applying Palworld status effects: Tips and combat combos

Palworld combat: Use status effects like Poison, Burn, and Freeze effectively

Status effects, also known as ailments, are a bonus effect on many attacks. Almost every element has a corresponding effect—some even have two. They can sometimes be triggered by player weapons or the environment, but your Pals’ Active Skills (their attacks) are the most reliable way to apply status effects regularly. Of course, enemy Pals can inflict them as well, so stay alert.

Except for Poison, each effect can only be active once on a Pal; reapplying a different one will overwrite the previous effect. You can still try to reapply the same status repeatedly, though the chance to trigger it drops in extended fights. Beyond combat, a Pal’s capture rate also increases while it is affected by an ailment.

These effects matter in multiplayer, too. In the next section, we’ll look more closely at how to combine status effects and attacks. Rent an affordable Palworld server now. Especially against later bosses or tough Pals, these synergies are crucial for gaining the upper hand. The sooner your group masters them, the more effective your combat will be.

There are nine different effects you can apply. While Neutral has no effect, Ground, Dragon, and Dark can sometimes apply multiple. Always read Active Skill descriptions to pick the best combo. Some weapons—such as grenades and mines—can also inflict these effects.

Palworld status effect Blindness and Curse: Make attacks miss

Most Dark-type attacks can blind enemies, shown by a black cloud over their eyes. If you get hit, your screen briefly turns black. Under this effect, attacks can sometimes miss for a short period. It isn’t particularly strong since it lasts only four seconds, and most attacks still land.

Palworld status effect Poison: Damage over time

Poison is familiar to many players. Some Dark attacks as well as certain Ground and Grass skills can inflict it. Poison arrows, bombs, and gas can also apply it. You’ll recognize it by the purple bubbles around the Pal. The effect lasts 17 seconds and deals a steady trickle of damage. The damage varies by enemy type, and bosses are notably more resistant. Poison is the only status effect that can stack alongside other effects.

Palworld status effect Freeze: Stop movement

Ice attacks, ice grenades, or ice mines can freeze an enemy Pal or you. A large ice block forms, making it easy to spot. Frozen targets cannot move for three seconds. It’s great for a breather or to set up a big attack. Ice- and Fire-type Pals are immune.

Palworld status effect Burning: Set Pals ablaze

Igniting targets is highly practical and covers a wide range of attacks. It primarily comes from Fire attacks, but some Dark, Dragon, Grass, and even Neutral skills can trigger it. Heat sources such as campfires can burn as well. The affected Pal takes regular damage for 14 seconds. The percentages vary by enemy type: normal Pals take 1.0 % damage, bosses only 0.5 % of their HP. While burning is active, Grass attacks deal half damage. Fire and Water Pals are immune.

Palworld Burn effect: Pal engulfed in flames during combat

Palworld status effect Entangle: Slow enemies

This effect is applied only by certain Grass attacks. Vines wrap the target, slowing it and preventing Stamina-based actions like jumping and dodging. It lasts 10 seconds. While active, Fire attacks deal double damage. Grass and Fire Pals are immune.

Palworld status effect Mire: Stuck in the ground

Mire is less powerful in direct combat but still useful. All Ground attacks can inflict it. Similar to Entangle, it slows the target, and Electric attacks deal only half damage to it. Ground and Grass Pals are immune.

Palworld status effect Stagger: Make Pals reel

You can stagger enemies only with the Field Cannon attack—and even then, mainly weaker Pals. It’s arguably the least useful ailment in Palworld. The attack can make enemies reel and knock them over. This can also be triggered by ramming Pals, a rocket launcher, or Penking’s special attack.

Palworld status effect Electrified: Paralysis and stun

Electric attacks can stun for three seconds, while the overall effect lasts 10 seconds. During this time, Water attacks deal double damage. The status can also be applied by a stun baton, grenades, or mines. Electric and Ground Pals are immune.

Palworld status effect Soaked: Amplify Electric damage

Soaking an enemy is a tactically strong setup. Use Water attacks to soak the target for 10 seconds. Water Pals are immune. While soaked, Fire attacks deal half damage, while Electric attacks deal double damage. A good combo here can swing a fight.

Conclusion: Win tactically with Palworld status effects

Status effects are a key pillar of Palworld’s combat system, and you should learn them as early as possible. Some effects help you deal more damage and craft strong team combos. Others give you a brief respite, rendering your opponent temporarily unable to act. Use ailments to your advantage, and learn their immunities, durations, and synergies so you can apply them tactically. In particular, double damage windows or immunities can secure you the win.
