Without the right armor, you won’t last long in Minecraft and you’ll be vulnerable to monster attacks. For protection, the hardness of the material and your armor’s enchantments are crucial. But now you can also enhance your armor visually. That won’t help much in combat, but it’s a great way to tell pieces apart at a glance or give them a personal touch. In total, you can find 18 different templates and apply them in various colors. To get them, you’ll need to explore the world, defeat certain enemies, or loot structures. We’ll show you where to find them all!
Minecraft smithing templates: Smithing table and colors for armor trims
Smithing Templates and armor trims were added to Minecraft so every player can make their armor uniquely their own. They’re purely cosmetic and give you no combat advantage. Templates can be found in many different structures, then used at the smithing table with any armor piece and a mineral or gem to forge a unique combination. Their patterns often hint at where they’re found or include small Easter eggs.
In total, you can find 18 different trims, combine them with 11 colors, and individually style all four of your armor pieces.
All colors for armor trims at the smithing table

All 18 trim variants can be dyed in 11 different colors. You don’t need to find colors separately—they’re based on familiar ores and gems you find during normal play. At the smithing table, combine your chosen template, an armor piece, and one of the materials below.
All colors for armor trims:
- Emerald: Green
- Redstone: Red
- Lapis Lazuli: Blue
- Diamond: Light blue/teal
- Nether Quartz: Warm gray-white
- Amethyst Shard: Purple
- Iron Ingot: Gray
- Copper Ingot: Brown
- Gold Ingot: Golden yellow
- Netherite Ingot: Dark gray to black
- Resin Bricks: Orange
Duplicating smithing templates for armor at the crafting table

You actually only need to find each template once—after that you can reproduce it infinitely as long as you keep at least one original. Place the template in the top-middle slot of a crafting table and surround it with seven diamonds. Put the corresponding material in the center—this varies by template. In the list below, we’ll cover the material for each trim. In general, they’re thematically tied to the template’s origin.
Netherite Upgrade: Improve diamond armor to netherite

Technically, there are 19 such templates, but one is different: the Netherite Upgrade. It isn’t used to decorate your armor, but to upgrade diamond to netherite. It’s found only in Bastion Remnants—with a 10% chance in regular chests and a guaranteed 100% in treasure chests.
Like other templates, you only need to find it once, then you can duplicate it with the template, seven diamonds, and one Netherrack. To apply it, you’ll need a piece of diamond armor, the Netherite Upgrade, and a Netherite Ingot. Combine them at a smithing table to get your netherite armor.
