After the dark, soggy Swamp, you head into a completely different region. Wherever the terrain rises high enough, Valheim generates vast, snow-covered mountain ranges. If the Swamp already felt tough, you’ll be trudging through the Mountains with real effort. The weather is freezing, visibility is limited, and powerful monsters await. At the same time, the lofty peaks hide secrets you won’t want to miss. Climb the highest point or search for Frost Caves to find top-tier loot. And at the end, a major boss awaits to open the path to the next biome.
Valheim Mountains Guide: Overview, tips, and cold protection
You’ll find Mountains in Valheim wherever the terrain is high enough. They can appear as little as 600 meters from spawn if conditions are right. Naturally, we recommend exploring them only after the Swamp—before that, you’re likely not strong enough.
Your biggest enemy here is the cold, which you must counter. Early on, you’ll need to brew Frost Resistance Mead; later you can craft wolf-fur armor or other gear. That will prepare you for the frost and let you explore the region without interruption. It’s great fun in co-op, too. Here you can rent an affordable Valheim server so everyone can gear up against the cold. If you’re not equipped for the chill, you’ll steadily lose health.
Valheim Mountain resources: Finding silver, obsidian, onion seeds, and wolf pelts
The Mountains introduce new crafting materials to push your progress in Valheim. Unlock fresh recipes and expand your storage to use them well. You’ll also find a new crop you can grow on your farm.
- Silver: Locate silver veins using the Wishbone from the previous boss. Silver lets you replace much of your iron gear.
- Obsidian: Similar to flint and used for arrows (Frost, Poison, and Obsidian).
- Onion seeds: Collect these to grow onions for better food options.
- Wolf pelt: Needed for Wolf Armor, which offers better cold protection.
- Wolf meat: A key ingredient for new cooking recipes.
- Wolf fang: Can be used to craft a spear and a useful combat trinket.

Valheim Mountain creatures: Wolves, Drakes, and Cultists
Monsters are rarer in the Mountains but stronger. Alongside familiar foes like Draugr and Skeletons, you’ll encounter many new enemies. Some appear only at night, others only in caves.
- Wolf: Common enemies with valuable drops. Can also be tamed.
- Stone Golem: Big rock brutes with heavy hits, but weak to pickaxes.
- Drakes: Frost wyverns and a small taste of the biome’s boss.
- Fenring: Werewolves that roam at night.
- Bat: Annoying little pests found in caves. Scare them off with a torch. They only drop Leather scraps.
- Ulv: Similar to Fenrings, but moving on all fours and living in caves. They bite and claw.
- Cultists: Werewolves in red cloaks walking on two legs. They drop Red Jute and trophies for crafting.
Valheim Mountain food: Recipes with onions and wolf meat
The onion seeds you find and the wolf meat you gather form the base of most Mountain recipes. There aren’t many, but these dishes will carry you through this harsh region.
Food for more stamina:
- Onions: An important ingredient in various recipes, recognizable by their distinct bulb.
- Onion Soup: A tasty soup that restores 60 stamina and 20 HP.
- Eyescream: Ice cream made from Greydwarf eyes and Freeze Glands. Grants 65 stamina.
Food for more health:
- Wolf meat: Grill it over a fire for 45 HP.
- Wolf Skewer: A better meal with added mushrooms and onions for 65 HP and 21 stamina.
- Wolf Jerky: Wolf meat cured with honey, giving you 33 HP and 33 stamina.
Valheim Mountain POIs: Frost Caves, Howling Caves, and towers
Valheim’s Mountains also feature several interesting structures. Many will feel familiar from other biomes, including ruined and abandoned towers, cabins, and burial grounds. The most intriguing are the cave systems that act as dungeons and contain valuable resources.
- Frost Cave: Recognizable by rocky entrances adorned with icicles. Cultists dwell here. You’ll also find a rune stone that reveals the boss’s location. Gather key items and resources and loot the chests.
- Howling Cave: Caves laced with ice. Here you’ll encounter Geirrhafa, a mini-boss tied to the chest questline for the merchant Hildir.
Valheim Mountain boss: Defeating Moder — tactics and rewards
The Mountains’ boss is Moder, the Dragon Mother, an imposing foe in Valheim. To summon her, bring three Dragon Eggs to the altar. You’ll find them in Drake nests. Then start the fight. Moder uses a variety of attacks, but they’re quite dodgeable. She strikes with claws and wings and breathes ice.
Despite her size, the strategy is straightforward. Use melee when she lands. Avoid magic weapons and stick to traditional gear. Even better is ranged combat with a bow and Fire Arrows, to which Moder is weak. Obsidian Arrows also perform well.
Moder drops a Dragon Tear, which you need to craft the Artisan Table—a crucial upgrade on your journey. Moder’s activatable Forsaken power grants constant tailwind at sea, perfect for long voyages.
