After the gloomy Swamp and the icy Mountains, the Plains—the next biome—don’t seem all that bad. Vast fields stretch for many kilometers and offer plenty of space to build a large base. But this peaceful-looking biome is deceptive: dangers await you here too, some smaller than you might first assume. So make sure you’re well prepared and know the essentials about the area to avoid an untimely death. This guide will help you handle the core items, creatures, and pitfalls of the Plains.
Valheim Plains: Biome overview, tips, and preparation

The wide-open Plains of Valheim lie roughly 2,900 to 8,000 meters from spawn, so you’ll find them fairly late. The weather is sunny and warm. Light-green and yellow grasses sway gently in the wind, making the biome feel calm and serene. Thanks to the flat terrain, it’s also a perfect place to build a base—especially on servers with multiple players. Get a Valheim game server rental and set up your own camp in the Plains to give yourself plenty of room.
As you’ll see below, though, this biome isn’t as friendly as it first appears. You should prepare well, with the best Mountain-tier armor and a selection of protective meads.
Valheim Plains resources: barley, flax, black metal, and tar
Just like earlier biomes, the Plains hold several important resources you’ll need for new crafting recipes. These include two new crops, a new berry, and even a new metal—which you won’t mine in the usual way but loot instead.
- Barley: A key grain used to make flour, straw, and mead bases. Can only be grown in the Plains.
- Flax: Spin linen thread at the spinning wheel for better armor pieces. A very important resource.
- Cloudberries: White‑yellow berries that look like little clouds. Vital for cooking and mead bases, and also a dye for banners.
- Black metal: Smelted from black metal scrap, which you loot from Fulings or find in chests across the Plains.
- Tar: Small, black clumps—perfect for builders. Unlocks many new building pieces, especially darkwood and shingle roofs.
Valheim Plains enemies: Deathsquitos, Fulings, and Lox

There aren’t many new enemies, but the ones you’ll meet pack a punch. For many players, the Plains can be a major hurdle and stall progress for quite some time. With a few tricks, though, you can take them on and turn their drops to your advantage.
- Deathsquitos: Among the deadliest mobs in the game—small, fast, and hard-hitting with pierce damage. Use a good shield to block, wear high-tier armor, and try to shoot them down as they approach. They drop needles for new arrow types.
- Lox: Massive creatures native to the Plains. You can kill them for meat and hide, or tame them and ride them with a saddle. More in our guide (Valheim animal taming: Guide to breeding, mounts, and resources) .
- Fulings: The enemies you should actively hunt. Goblin-like, living in their own villages. Stronger variants include Shamans and Berserkers with better drops. They drop valuable black metal scrap, trophies, and the totem needed to summon the boss.
- Growth: Another type of slime found near tar pits. Fire and blunt weapons work well against them.
Valheim Plains food: recipes with barley and cloudberries

With barley and the new berries, you can unlock several new cooking recipes. As always, we recommend balancing stamina and health and testing different dishes.
Foods for more stamina:
- Cloudberries: Edible raw, providing 40 stamina.
- Blood pudding: The best stamina food here, with 75 stamina and 25 HP.
- Bread: Baked from barley flour, also strong at 70 stamina.
- Glazed sweet bread: Pastry made from honey, cloudberries, egg, and barley flour. Grants 43 HP as well as stamina.
Foods for more health:
- Cooked egg: After defeating Yagluth, you can buy eggs from Haldor, hatch them, and raise chickens. They give 35 HP. Sometimes found as loot in towers.
- Chicken meat: Very nourishing, with 60 HP, but you’ll need to raise chickens first.
- Fish wraps: Combine fish and barley flour for a snack that adds 70 HP.
- Lox meat pie: The overall best dish of the biome, with 75 HP and 24 stamina.
Valheim Plains POIs: tar pits, sealed towers, and Fuling villages

You can find various points of interest across the Plains with great loot—but expect tough enemies as well. Move carefully and come prepared.
- Tar pit: Pits filled with black liquid that you must drain using trenches. Source of tar and bone fragments.
- Sealed Tower: The Plains’ dungeon, overrun by Fulings. As minibosses, you can defeat Zil and Thungr and recover one of Hildir’s chests. There are three towers per map.
- Fuling villages: The Plains are settled by Fulings, with small and large villages everywhere.
Valheim Plains boss Yagluth: summoning, tactics, and rewards

Collect five Fuling totems and place them at the boss altar to summon Yagluth. This grotesque creature is surrounded by purple smoke and attacks primarily with magical, fiery abilities. Your most important counter is fire resistance, either via Fenris armor or Fire resistance barley wine. Weapon-wise, the Silver sword, Frostner, and Blackmetal sword are all solid choices. Always keep enough stamina to dodge.
Besides the trophy, Yagluth drops a torn spirit, which lets you craft Wisp Fountains. Wisps are essential in the next biome, the Mistlands.
Conclusion on the Valheim Plains: Build safely and fight smart
Despite their tranquil looks, the Plains hide plenty of nasty surprises. Enemies are strong and can overwhelm you quickly—the smallest ones, Deathsquitos, are especially relentless. Fighting is worth it, though, to produce valuable materials like black metal. You should also grow barley and flax to upgrade your gear and unlock new foods. In the end you’ll face Yagluth, an ancient Fuling monstrosity and one of the toughest bosses in the game.
