Once again this year, a fourth drop is on its way. In keeping with this year’s theme, where the updates have roughly followed the seasons, things are getting frosty one more time towards the end of the year! Some of the snapshots are already out and show that this drop really packs a punch! You can dive into new caves, meet a new zombie variant or expand your block palette with ice and snow. And that’s probably not everything the 2026 winter drop has in store. We’re taking a first look at the coolest new features and speculating about what else might come.

New Cave Biome in Minecraft 26.4: The Ice Caves

Minecraft 26.4 Ice Cave with icicles, snow and Frostbite zombies

Just like the Sulfur Cube in the summer, Minecraft is getting another cave biome. This time it’s the Ice Caves, which are filled with snow, calcite and ice. New cave biomes are always exciting and bring more variety to the world below ground. Alongside the Lush Caves and Dripstone Caves, there are now even more interesting places to discover.

Ice Caves generate beneath cold biomes, such as taigas, Snowy Plains or cold oceans. Existing worlds will get them too as soon as you travel into unexplored areas. Once the update is out, you can explore them in your old world as well. Rent a Minecraft server now and get ready for the Ice Caves with your friends.

Be careful down here, because the ground is slippery. In some places there are also small ravines and crevasses you can fall into. Monsters spawn as usual, but instead of skeletons you’ll meet Strays, and instead of zombies the new Frostbites. These icy zombies throw Ice Balls at you, one of the new items. You can find everything about the other zombie variants in our guide (Minecraft Zombies: Spawns, Loot, Variants and Tips) .

New Blocks in 26.4: Brittle Ice, Icicles and Bricks

The Ice Caves also bring some new blocks, and the block palette has grown elsewhere too. In the caves themselves you’ll find Brittle Ice, usually covering crevasses and ravines. If you stand on it for too long, it breaks and you fall down. You can only collect it with Silk Touch.

The caves are also decorated with Icicles and Ice Crystals. Icicles grow similar to dripstone and melt when a light source that’s too bright is nearby. Watch out, because that can also make them fall on your head! Ice Crystals, on the other hand, are reminiscent of amethyst and can be placed in any direction on almost any full block. They give off a little light and have a quiet sound that nicely underlines the atmosphere. That makes them a stylish decoration for your home!

The drop gets even better when we look at the new blocks made from snow and packed ice. Both get a brick variant with full blocks, slabs, stairs and walls. Packed Ice Bricks have a beautiful blue and, by the way, are not slippery! On top of that there’s Chiseled Packed Ice. If you want to learn more about the secrets of these blocks, read our article (Minecraft: Chiseled blocks, all motifs, locations, and tips) . Snow Bricks, meanwhile, are white with blue accents. By the way, you need a shovel for them, not a pickaxe.

Freezing Effect, Ice Balls and Potion of Freezing

The freezing effect isn’t new and most players probably know it from Powder Snow. With 26.4, however, it’s being expanded and used in other places too. Frostbites also trigger the effect with their melee attacks. The edge of your screen freezes and you take some damage. If you defeat a Frostbite, it drops Ice Balls. You can use them to brew Potions of Freezing and use them as a weapon or craft Tipped Arrows. Which other potions you can brew is shown in our guide (All Minecraft Potions and Their Versatile Uses) .

Another exciting frost effect can now also be created with the Sulfur Cube. With Blue Ice it gets a new archetype that lets it freeze water. This works just like the Frost Walker enchantment, so the ice breaks again after a while.

Jukebox Update in 26.4: Play Music as a Playlist

Minecraft 26.4 new jukebox with a chest on top as a playlist for music discs

Away from ice and snow, 26.4 also reworks the jukebox. You can tell from the outside that it has received a fresh look! Jukeboxes are among the oldest features in the game, and you’ve been able to play the music discs you find with them since the Alpha. Now, though, you can also create a playlist and have songs play automatically one after another.

To do this, place a chest on top of the jukebox and fill it with your favorite music discs. They are played in order and swapped automatically as soon as a song ends. An extremely cool feature! You no longer have to insert discs by hand and can relax in your base while listening to the sounds of Minecraft.

Winter Drop Speculation: White Leaves, Snowlogging and More?

Minecraft Bedrock snowy forest with white leaves and flowers in the snow

Those are all the bigger features that have been shown in the snapshots so far. The update will probably be released in December, so there’s still plenty of room. So far, every new snapshot on Tuesday has brought new features too. Let’s hope that wasn’t everything! We still have a few ideas about what the drop could bring.

We recently talked about features exclusive to Bedrock (Minecraft Bedrock Edition: 8 exclusive features Java is missing) . One of them is the behavior of snow, which differs from Java. On the one hand, leaves turn white in Bedrock when it snows, which looks really nice. On the other hand, in Bedrock you can “snowlog” flowers, grass and mushrooms, meaning cover them with snow, which isn’t possible in Java either. We’d also love for this to work with fences! All of this would fit perfectly into the winter drop and bring both versions closer together in this area.

Conclusion: Minecraft 26.4 Brings an Icy Winter Update

Towards the end of the year, things get really frosty once more with Minecraft drop 26.4! We can dive down into the Ice Caves and find all kinds of new blocks there. Along the way we might also run into the new Frostbite, which pelts us with Ice Balls. These can in turn be used to brew a new potion! For creative players, the new ice and snow blocks are especially interesting, as they fill an important gap in white and blue blocks. And on the side, you can listen to your own playlist of music discs with the improved jukebox. And who knows what else is still to come!
