Survivors in Enshrouded are NPCs you can find across Embervale and bring along on your journey. Each specializes in a specific role and is especially helpful with crafting. Once you have the Summoning Staff and have found your first survivor, you can place them at your base. Talk to them for new quests, recipes, or other functions that can only be unlocked this way. The game will guide you to all NPCs over time, but maybe you want to find them earlier? We’ve put together a list of where to find every survivor and what they do.

Enshrouded Blacksmith Oswald Anders: Weapons, armor, and workstations
Tasks: Oswald is one of the most important NPCs in Enshrouded, as he unlocks many new recipes for additional weapons and armor. You won’t get far in combat without him. He’s also required to build the following workstations: Charcoal Kiln, Forge, Smelter, Blacksmith’s Tools, and Blast Furnace. He’s vital for processing ore into useful tools and for upgrades to your gear.
Location: You’ll find the blacksmith early in the game, not far from the Braelyn Bridge. Northwest of it is an Ancient Vault. Simply interact with the statue to add Oswald to your inventory.
Enshrouded Alchemist Balthazar: Craft magical weapons and potions
Tasks: With the Alchemist at your base, you can unlock everything related to magic and magical items. This includes Grindstones, Mortar, Alchemy Station, and Laboratory. He lets you craft magical weapons and armor and also handles potions when you need them. If you or a friend enjoys using magic, find Balthazar as early as possible. Location: You can find Balthazar in an Ancient Vault on the southwestern edge of the map, also early in the game.
Enshrouded Carpenter Cade Hawthorn: Building, furniture, gliders, and grappling hooks
Tasks: Cade handles everything related to construction. He can use the Kiln, Table Saw, and Mason’s Tools. Through him, you can make furniture and chests to improve your base. He also crafts new gliders and grappling hooks, which are very important.
Location: You’ll need a bit more courage for Cade, as his hideout is right in the Shroud. He’s in another Ancient Vault, east of the spawn point at the bottom edge of the map. Bring a pickaxe, as you’ll need to break through a wall to reach him.
Enshrouded Huntress Athalan Skree: Gear for hunting and stealth
Tasks: With her, you can craft everything important for hunting—perfect for ranger builds or assassins. She unlocks the Drying Rack, Hand Spindle, Tanning Station, Loom, Spinning Wheel, and Spinning Machine, so quite a few stations.
Location: She’s also in an Ancient Vault, directly east of where you found Oswald. The temple is at the Night Sanctuary and is hard to miss thanks to its size. Solve a few puzzles and you’ll find the essence of Athalan Skree in an urn at the very top.
Enshrouded Farmer Emily Fray: Farming, husbandry, and food
Tasks: Emily is likely one of the most important survivors and can use the most stations. These include the Seedbed, Cooking Station, Almanac of Plants and Seedlings, Oven, Beehive, Seafood Grill, Coffee Brewery, Coffee Roaster, and the Kitchen. With her, you can tend fields, tame animals, and craft delicious food.
Location: You’ll find Emily Fray farther north of your spawn point in a large temple. Use the West Gate at the edge of the map as a reference, then head a bit east from there. You need to find three switches to enter the main chamber.
Enshrouded Alden Crowley: Ectoplasm Press and dungeon items
Tasks: Crowley is a masked character who doesn’t reveal much about himself. With his Ectoplasm Press, you can craft some useful dungeon items. He also unlocks a few decorative elements for your base.
Location: You’ll find Crowley in the Springlands Hollow Halls, located in the southwestern corner of the map. It’s one of the dungeons and contains many monsters. Fight your way through the halls to reach the NPC.
Enshrouded Bard Valory: Music, decor, and backpacks
Tasks: Valory isn’t crucial for progression, as she has no workstations and focuses on music and decoration. She’s become essential, however, because only she can unlock backpacks for more inventory space.
Location: You’ll have to travel farther for Valory, deep into the swamp in the north. There you’ll find another Vault where you can pick up the bard. The ruins only open once you’ve found three buttons. The area is quite expansive, so explore every corner for secrets.
Enshrouded Captain Melville Fontane: Unlock fishing
Tasks: With Captain Fontane, you can unlock some essentials for fishing. You’ll first need to complete some of his quests before you can craft his items.
Location: You’ll find the Captain at Ol’ Captain’s Rest, roughly in the middle of Enshrouded’s map. He’s part of the Veilwater Basin, a high-level area, so you should wait a bit before unlocking him.
Enshrouded Merchant Mei-Yin Chen: Lunar New Year outfits and decor
Tasks: If you want some stylish outfits and pretty decorations for your base, look for Mei-Yin Chen. She can craft items related to the Lunar New Year.
Location: You can find Chen in the Shroud between the Carpenter and the Huntress, at a place called Ring of Rot. Her remains are near an overturned wagon.
Enshrouded Stylist Elio Ricci: Character customization and dyes
Tasks: With Elio, you can give your character a new look. He can also use the dye station to recolor your hair and eyes. Completing his questlines will unlock additional hairstyles.
Location: You can find Elio in the Elders’ Night Sanctuary, a location east of the farmer’s spot and just before the Highlands. You’ll need to find a cave entrance and have Sparks on you. Watch out for the Shroud, which you’ll encounter again here.
