One of the most interesting systems in Valheim is that you don’t just craft your equipment once — you can also upgrade it throughout a biome. That keeps the item useful from start to finish and lets it grow stronger alongside your progress in that biome. Until now, the cap was always at four levels, which varied by item and crafting station. With the Forge of Potential, however, you have another way to push your favorite items to the limit and enhance them beyond their potential. Today we’ll take a closer look at how it works and whether the Forge is really worth it!

Valheim gear upgrades: workbench, materials, and levels

Valheim 1.0 upgrade gear at the workbench up to level 4

Even before update 1.0, you could upgrade tools, armor, and weapons at their respective crafting station up to four levels. Use the right-hand tab in the menu to see what upgrades are available. These upgrades cost materials, typically the same ones needed to craft the item itself. The bonuses depend on the item.

  • Armor: Often gains more durability and more armor points
  • Weapons: Last longer and hit harder. Some even get new damage profiles!
  • Tools: Generally become more effective and last longer.

This system relies on you gathering the right materials in a biome and investing them into your gear. You’ll also need to upgrade the relevant crafting station to unlock new levels. For example, you can extend the Workbench with a chopping block or a tool rack to access additional upgrades.

We also recommend starting with this system. Rent a Valheim server and play with friends to team up and upgrade your favorite items. With version 1.0, however, a new system arrived that lets you go beyond level 4 — but it comes with significant risk!

Valheim Forge of Potential: location, use, and Idols

Find the Forge of Potential in Valheim's Mountains

This new system is the Forge of Potential, a new location on the map. You’ll only find it in the Mountains, so you’ll need to progress a bit to get there. Its spawn works like Hildir or the witch in the Swamp — it’s generated with the seed, and you must explore until the icon appears on your map. The first Forge you discover then becomes the permanent spot.

If you started fresh, you may have already found some Idols on your way to the Mountains and wondered what they’re for. This is where they come in! There are Idols of Protection (armor) and Idols of Combat (weapons and tools). They’re also split by material, so in total you can find 16 different Idols.

Use Valheim Idols of Protection and Combat for upgrades

Once you’ve found the Forge and have a few Idols in your bag, you can try an upgrade. You always need the Idol that matches the item. The Forge of Potential has two big advantages:

  • Upgrades cost no materials other than the Idol, which is consumed.
  • You can push upgrades beyond level 4 if luck is on your side.

So what’s the catch? Each upgrade has a chance that the item won’t improve and instead breaks! The odds are roughly 65% success and 35% failure. If the item breaks, you’ll get back some of the crafting materials. A small consolation for losing a valuable item. Whether it’s worth it — we’ll look at that at the end.

Finding Valheim Idols: locations and matching upgrades

Upgrades at the Forge of Potential don’t consume resources, but you must spend a matching Idol each time. Per biome, you can find both Idols of Protection and Idols of Combat made from that biome’s material, each upgrading an item by one level. Here’s where to find these totems and which upgrades they’re used for. Some Idols can also be found across multiple biomes.

  • Wood Idols (for Meadows gear)

    • Meadows: Abandoned house, abandoned farm, Viking graveyard
  • Bronze Idols (for Black Forest gear)

Is the Valheim Forge of Potential worth it? Success rates and risk

Valheim Forge of Potential risk and success chances when upgrading

You’re probably wondering if it’s actually worth using the Forge of Potential on your prized items. In general, we recommend starting with the conventional upgrade path because there’s no risk. Yes, it can take a while to gather all the materials — but there’s no chance of your item breaking.

The Forge of Potential is worth it only if you really like an item and want to try carrying it into the next biome. By design, your gear in Valheim is meant for the biome you’re currently in. It becomes obsolete and is replaced in the following biome. With this Forge, you can try to squeeze out the maximum — but keep in mind there’s about a 35% chance the item will break.

Conclusion on the Forge of Potential: chances and risks

In Valheim, it’s essential to improve your gear as you progress. Weapons, armor, and tools can always be upgraded at their respective crafting stations with more materials to keep pace with your current biome. That does require additional resources and station upgrades, and it’s capped at level 4. This is where the new Forge of Potential comes in, removing both constraints — at a price. With Idols, your upgrade isn’t guaranteed, and you take on the risk of the item breaking.
