In Valheim, you won’t just embark on thrilling adventures—you’ll also build a cozy home. That’s actually very important, because it’s the only way to gain one of the game’s most useful buffs. With enough comfort and a well-appointed dwelling, your character becomes rested and better prepared for any expedition. Ideally, this effect should always be active whenever you’re away from home. But how do you squeeze the maximum out of your comfort? Today we’ll take a closer look at Valheim’s comfort system and share tips to help you stay rested at all times.

Valheim comfort explained Prerequisites and effects

Valheim comfort system explained with Rested effect

In Valheim, comfort means a well-furnished home that helps you rest and relax after a long journey. It’s important to have a safe base and fill it with various pieces of furniture. Depending on the category, you can place furniture and benefit from its bonuses.

The foundation of this is the resting effect. It activates when three criteria are met:

  1. There are no monsters nearby.
  2. You are near a fire.
  3. Your character has a roof overhead and is not wet, freezing, or suffering from any other negative status effect.

This is also one of the first things you should take care of as a new player. With us, you can rent your own Valheim server and immediately build your own house to benefit from this effect. Naturally, all players benefit if you’re playing multiplayer together.

Valheim Rested effect buff icons and bonuses

If these conditions are met, a “Zzz” icon appears on your status bar with a comfort counter beneath it. You’ll also gain the effects: Health regeneration +200%, Stamina regeneration +300%, and Eitr regeneration +300%. If you rest for 20 seconds, you’ll gain an additional effect based on your comfort. This Rested effect is the one you’re really after.

With the Rested buff active, you gain:

  • Health regeneration +50%
  • Stamina regeneration +100%
  • XP +50%
  • Eitr regeneration +100%

What’s crucial is how long this effect lasts. That depends on your comfort level. A level of 1 gives you 8 minutes, and each comfort point adds one minute. The maximum is 22 comfort in normal progression for 29 minutes; with additional seasonal items you can reach 24 comfort for 31 minutes.

To raise your comfort level, build a stylish base with various elements. You’ll unlock these as you progress. You can’t reach comfort level 22 in the Meadows yet, but later, far to the north, you certainly can. The Rested effect should always be active and refreshed periodically so you always benefit from it.

From sitting by a fire, having no enemies nearby, and a roof over your head, you already get 3 comfort points. Additionally, you should have at least one piece of furniture from the following categories within a radius of 10 meters to gain even more points.

Note: You only ever get one comfort level per category, not per item. The best item in the category is what counts.

Valheim fire sources for comfort points

The fire that grants a point for the effect can be of different types. At first you can only build a campfire, but later you can upgrade. All fire sources grant +1 level, except the hearth, which gives +2 points. The fire must be lit to receive the effect.

Carpets and rugs Increase comfort

Your home also needs a suitable floor covering, and different carpets and rugs will help. They’re usually made from the hides of animals and monsters you encounter in the biomes, though some use natural materials. Rugs from bear, wolf, lox, and elk give +2 comfort.

Place tables for more comfort

Tables are important and should be placed in your room. You can place items on them or gather around them with your friends. As you progress, you’ll unlock better tables that give +2 comfort. For those you’ll need tar from the Plains.

Chairs benches and thrones Comfort bonus

Of course, you also need a place to sit, which is where any kind of chair helps. The higher the quality, the better. Benches give +1, chairs +2, and thrones +3 comfort. To get the maximum, build yourself a fine throne.

Beds in Valheim Comfort and spawn point

There are surprisingly few beds in Valheim, but you should build one even if you don’t sleep. Only the dragon bed gives +2 comfort.

Banners and jute banners Comfort bonus

These stylish decorations can be hung in your base to mark your territory. Regular banners give +1 comfort level, while jute banners give +2.

Plants and garlands For additional comfort

You can gain another level with plants that add a touch of green to your home. These include flower garlands, as well as some seasonal items like mistletoe, a Yule garland, and a Yule wreath. These are part of Valheim’s winter festivities in December.

Armor stands and item stands Comfort

You also get +1 comfort from either an armor stand or an item stand. You don’t need to place an item on them—the effect still works.

Barber’s table and hot tub Comfort through bathing

For this category, you can build the barber’s table for +1 level, and later add a hot tub to your base for +2 comfort. It must be turned on for the effect to apply.

Valheim lamps and lighting comfort

Lights and lamps Lighting with comfort

Your house also needs the right lighting, and a few lamps can help. Dvergr lanterns give +1 comfort level. Later you can also craft a lava lamp for +2 comfort, as well as a pumpkin for Halloween. There’s also the snow lantern, but it melts in warm biomes.

Ashlands decor Additional comfort in the late game

Finally, you can make use of a few items in the Ashlands. For example, build an Asksvin skeleton or one of three green pots to gain one more comfort level.

Seasonal decor Maypole and Christmas tree

There are also two seasonal structures that each grant one more level. During the Midsummer Festival (June 1 to July 6) you can place a Maypole. Rarely, it can also be a structure you find in the Meadows. In winter, between December 1 and January 6, you can place a small Christmas tree. It also grants another level, bringing the maximum to 24 comfort.

Conclusion Build a Valheim house for maximum comfort

Comfort is arguably the most important effect in Valheim and you should always keep an eye on it. The better your home setup, the longer the buff lasts when you’re away. If you’re heading out on a long adventure, make sure you’re using the maximum comfort level. The Rested effect not only improves HP, stamina, and Eitr regeneration, it also gives you a +50% bonus to earned experience points. The further you progress, the better the furniture you can build.
