In Minecraft, monsters don’t just spawn in darkness—they can also appear over and over in set places. These spawners are tied to specific structures in the world, making them perfect for farming different resources. They’re also one of the oldest features in the game, still relevant today and continually expanded. Spawners are incredibly useful and you can put them to work for your own goals. But where exactly do you find them? And which mobs do they produce? We’ll cover all that and more in this guide to Minecraft’s mob spawners.
Minecraft mob spawners: definition, how they work, and conditions
Mob spawners are one of the oldest features in Minecraft. They’ve been in the game since Infdev, and their function has barely changed. As a block, they look like a kind of cage with a specific mob inside. That mob can spawn in a radius around the spawner, indefinitely. However, the right conditions for that mob must be met, such as light level and space. If those conditions are fulfilled, new monsters will keep spawning.
You can’t mine a spawner and take it with you. That makes it quite unique—there aren’t many blocks you can’t obtain. You can break a spawner with a pickaxe, but it will then drop 15-43 experience points. This is important for newcomers and servers alike: once it’s gone, you can’t restore it. Finding Minecraft spawners: all types and locations
There are now quite a few different spawners to find in Minecraft. They are always tied to structures—you won’t find them at random—so you can head straight for them. That makes it easier to plan a trap in advance or bring enough torches to light them up.
Minecraft zombie spawners in dungeons: loot and locations
You’ll most often run into zombie spawners. They’re part of dungeons, another very old Minecraft structure. These are rooms made of cobblestone and mossy cobblestone with a spawner in the center. You’ll also find one or two loot chests.
A dungeon spawner can host other mobs, but 50% of the time it’s a zombie spawner. Dungeons primarily generate underground, often near mineshafts, winding caves, or ravines. Sometimes they can generate higher up as well. Zombie spawners are handy, but not necessarily the best for trap farms. Zombies mostly drop rotten flesh, with iron, carrots, or potatoes only very rarely.
Minecraft skeleton spawners in dungeons: drops and XP
More desirable is the dungeon variant with a skeleton spawner. This can appear 25% of the time, making it twice as rare. Skeletons offer better drops—bones, arrows, and bows—which makes this spawner preferable for most players. They drop the same amount of XP as zombies. Minecraft spider spawners: dungeon and woodland mansion
The third dungeon variant comes with a spider spawner. The chance is also just 25%, making them as rare as skeletons. Spiders don’t have the best drops, but string is useful for crafting and spider eyes are needed for brewing. And don’t forget spiders can climb!
There’s actually a second place to find a regular spider spawner. A “spider room” can generate as part of a Woodland Mansion, containing lots of cobwebs and a spider spawner. However, this room is not guaranteed and isn’t present in every mansion.
Minecraft cave spider spawners in mineshafts: danger and farming tips
Sticking with spiders, you’ll mostly find the poisonous variant in mineshafts. Cave spider spawners are part of their generation and are surrounded by lots of cobwebs. The small spiders are nasty: they like to hide and can poison you with a single hit. They drop the same items as regular spiders, which isn’t great. But multiple spawners in one area can be combined into a solid XP farm.
Minecraft silverfish spawner in strongholds: portal room and risk
Silverfish are annoying little critters you can encounter in various situations. You’re guaranteed to find them once you locate a stronghold and its portal room. Their spawner is built into the staircase leading to the portal. They have little health and aren’t strong alone, but several silverfish can quickly swarm you. We generally recommend breaking this spawner.
Minecraft blaze spawners in nether fortresses: blaze rods and XP farm
Heading to the Nether, you can also find two different spawners. First are blaze spawners, which generate as part of nether fortresses. Each fortress can have 0 to 2 spawners; they’re easy to spot and fenced in. Blazes can also spawn in fortresses without a spawner.

Minecraft magma cube spawners in bastion remnants: treasure room and froglight farm
The second Nether spawner appears only in bastion remnants, and only in certain variants of the structure. To find it, locate a treasure room and head all the way down.
