Foxes are one of many animal species added to Minecraft in recent years. They were part of a Minecon Earth community vote and were introduced with version 1.14. They’re not ordinary mobs like sheep or pigs—no, they come with a surprising number of nuances, quirks, and features unlike any other mob in Minecraft! That’s why today we’re focusing entirely on these fascinating little creatures, so you can put them to use in your world.
Finding Minecraft foxes: red and white variants and biomes
In Minecraft you can find two kinds of foxes. There’s the typical red fox with white patches in its fur. This common variant spawns in taiga as well as old-growth pine taiga and old-growth spruce taiga. They will also appear in the Autumn Forest, coming with version 26.3. There’s also a completely white fox, found only in snowy taiga and mountain groves.
Wherever they spawn, they appear in groups of two to four. You might get lucky, as there’s a 5% chance one fox will be a baby. Mechanically and gameplay-wise, the two variants are identical—they only differ in appearance. Still, it’s great to have both types around. With a high-performance, fairly priced Minecraft server you could, for example, build a zoo or use the fox’s cool features for other purposes. Foxes are generally nocturnal, so you’ll likely see them less often during the day. When the sun is out, they like to sleep in the shade of a tree, or sit if they can’t find a good spot for a nap. During dusk they wake up and forage at night. They also like to wander into villages to look around.

A fun fox feature is that they can hold items in their mouths. This works for any item in the game, though they prefer food and will drop other things for it. They’ll also pick up things like diamond swords or shovels and can attack with them—enchantments apply. A funny example is the interaction with Totems of Undying, which lets a fox survive death.
Foxes can also spawn already holding items. These include feathers, leather, and wheat at 20% each, eggs at 15%, a rabbit’s foot or rabbit hide at 10%, and very rarely an emerald at just 1%.

Foxes are natural hunters and won’t spare some small critters in Minecraft. They like to eat chickens and rabbits on land, and sometimes even small turtles. Gaining a Minecraft fox’s trust: breed a baby instead of taming
Foxes are naturally skittish and run from players who aren’t sneaking. And unlike most mobs, you can’t tame them, which makes them unique. But there is a way to gain a fox’s trust. You need to breed two foxes with sweet berries or glow berries. The resulting baby fox will trust you by default; it’s even better to separate it from its shy parents. It can even defend you if you’re attacked.

Finally, we’ll make use of another fox ability: they can pick sweet berries from their bushes. Foxes love to eat just about anything, but they can’t resist these berries. They do eat them, but since a full harvest drops 2–3 berries, the rest can be collected by you. That’s the basis of an automatic farm like this.

- Building blocks (e.g., andesite or stone)
- Dirt
- Glass blocks
- Sweet berries
- Rails + powered rails + redstone torches
- Chests + hoppers
- Minecart with hopper

Step by step: building an automatic sweet berry farm in Minecraft
- Find a suitable spot for your farm. Start by building a platform one block above the ground out of a solid material like stone. The size can vary—we chose 6×7 blocks. On one side, integrate two hoppers feeding into a double chest. Above that, place a closed loop for a minecart with hopper. Use at least two powered rails with redstone torches so the cart runs on its own. Give the cart a push.
- Above the rails, set up a field of sweet berry bushes on dirt. Then surround it with a block of your choice—glass is best so you can see through and watch the foxes. You can also add bright blocks to light the farm at night. Not required.
- Now bring one or more foxes into the farm, ideally with a lead and a temporary staircase. A handful of animals is enough for this size. They’ll eat from the bushes as soon as they’ve grown. Excess berries will be collected by the minecart and end up in the chest below.
