The Flame Altar is the structure in Enshrouded you will keep coming back to. It is not only the foundation of every base but also the only way to upgrade your character in certain aspects. It lets you extend your time in the Shroud and generally make your character stronger. The Flame keeps you warm and can also reset your skills. Upgrading the Flame is an important part of the gameplay loop and keeps you engaged, as you will sometimes need to track down hard-to-find materials. We take a closer look at all of this today so you know everything about the Flame Altar.
Enshrouded Flame Altar Guide: Functions, radius, and base building

You unlock the recipe for the Flame Altar through one of your first questlines that has you build a small base. The altar itself only requires five stone of any kind, so it is a very cheap recipe. This task makes it clear that the Flame Altar always marks the center of your base. Within the displayed radius you can change anything and build or dismantle at will. Everything beyond the boundary will revert to its original state after 30 minutes. The radius is only active while the Flame is burning.
The Flame Altar can do even more when you open its menu:
- Upgrade Altar: Upgrades for the altar itself. They determine your base’s build radius and can be increased three times.
- Strengthen Flame: The standard way to improve your altar’s Flame and therefore your character. With version 1.0 there are 11 levels to progress through during your adventure. We have summarized all benefits below.
- Reset skills: Respec your skills if you are not happy with them. It costs one Rune per point. You can do this as often as you like.
- Remove water: If you accidentally flooded your base, use this handy feature. First remove all water sources, then have the altar absorb the excess water.
- Deactivate altar: Extinguish the Flame and deactivate this base. A 30-second timer starts, during which you can undo the action.
- Set spawn point: You can set a Flame Altar as a spawn point when new players enter your world for the first time.
You can now build up to 16 altars in your world. You do not have to stick to a single base and can place several small outposts around the map. When playing with others, each player can have their own altar. Rent an Enshrouded game server and distribute Flame Altars as you like: Enshrouded Gameserver mieten. The limit is still 16, and only an admin can place them.
Enshrouded Flame Altar upgrades: increase build radius

Now let’s look at the upgrades for the altar itself. These are not global and apply to each altar individually. They affect your base’s build radius, so you can have both small and large bases. For these improvements you need Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus, two resources you can only find in the Shroud from Fell enemies. They are a bit rarer, especially the Nexus. Save them and only use them once you have found a truly permanent spot for your base.
- Level 1: 40-meter radius (standard)
- Level 2: 80-meter radius with 1x Shroud Core (from Flame Level 1)
- Level 3: 120-meter radius with 5x Shroud Cores (from Flame Level 2)
- Level 4: 160-meter radius with 5x Shroud Nexus (from Flame Level 3)
Strengthen the Flame in Enshrouded: Shroud bonuses, attributes, and time

More important is strengthening the Flame itself, which is global for your entire save. With the full release there are now eleven levels to use. You can generally expect one to two upgrades per region. Keep checking which requirements you still need for the next Flame level.
Strengthening the Flame grants the following benefits:
- Number of active altars: How many Flame Altars you can have active at the same time. Maximum 16.
- Capacity for water sources: How many water sources your base can contain. Maximum 50.
- Bonus to character attributes: Increases your primary attributes (Constitution, Endurance, Spirit, Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence) by +1 per level. The maximum is Level 10.
- Shroud level: Some Shroud areas can only be entered from a certain level onward. The maximum is 11 levels and increases by +1 per upgrade.
- Shroud time: Your initial 5 minutes in the Shroud can be extended by 1 minute with each upgrade, up to a maximum of 15 minutes in the Shroud.
What you need for each upgrade varies by level. What stays the same is that you must find new survivors and defeat larger Fell bosses in the Shroud. The remaining materials depend on the respective region and can require some grinding.
New in the highest level is the ability to push back the Shroud. Upgrade your Flame to Level 11 to unlock this feature. The radius depends on the altar’s own upgrade level, i.e., its build radius. This not only lets you build in the Shroud but also explore northern areas that were previously inaccessible.
Conclusion: Upgrade the Enshrouded Flame Altar and strengthen the Flame
The Flame Altar is a central hub during your Enshrouded adventure and serves multiple purposes at once. It is the center of your base and can be upgraded individually to build larger compounds. At the same time, you can strengthen the Flame itself to unlock global improvements for your character. In the end, you can even push back the Shroud. Other functions include resetting your skill points, removing water within the radius, and setting the respawn point.
