Workstations are a core part of Valheim’s gameplay. They not only let you craft items, but also upgrade gear and unlock new recipes. Different stations cover different tasks: you might forge weapons at one, while cooking your food at another. On top of that, the upgrade system keeps progression flowing and encourages you to make use of new resources as you reach fresh biomes. Upgrade pieces must be placed near the base station to boost its level, so always leave enough room for everything to link up. This guide rounds up the key workstations and their crafting menus.

Valheim Workbench: Crafting, Building, and Upgrades

The Workbench is the first station you’ll build. It grants access to a large portion of the build menu and unlocks more complex crafting. For the first tier you only need 10 wood, which you’ll easily find in the Meadows. Keep in mind the workbench and most stations require a roof to be usable. Only the building function works without a roof. The workbench also suppresses hostile spawns in a radius around it.

Use the workbench to make better tools and start gathering new resources. At first you won’t craft much, but with the right upgrades you’ll unlock more recipes and upgrade existing tools, weapons, and armor. You can also repair worn items here — at no cost.

The workbench has these four upgrade tiers:

  • Chopping Block: Requires wood and flint. Unlocks early gear and your first tool upgrades.
  • Tanning Rack: Add leather scraps and deer hides to reach tier three. All obtainable in the Meadows.
  • Adze: The fourth tier needs bronze, which you smelt from copper and tin found in the Black Forest.
  • Tool Shelf: Available once you reach the Mountains, as it requires both iron and obsidian.

Upgrades raise the workbench level to unlock more recipes and higher gear upgrade tiers. They do not increase the workbench’s build radius. In multiplayer this still lets you plan and erect larger houses by smartly placing multiple benches. If you want to play Valheim with friends, you can rent your own Valheim server. Use workbench upgrades to expand what you can build and craft.

Valheim Forge: Metal Weapons, Armor, and Upgrades

The Forge is more complex than the workbench and is primarily used for metal items: armor, weapons, shields, and ammo, as well as many later tools and trinkets. You also repair and upgrade those here. You can build a forge once you have copper, along with wood, coal, and stone.

A forge can gain these six upgrades:

  • Forge Cooler: Uses fine wood and copper — quick to craft early on.
  • Anvils: Still in the Black Forest tier, made from regular wood and bronze.
  • Forge Anvil: Requires iron found in the Swamp.
  • Forge Toolrack: Also needs iron from the Swamp.
  • Bellows: Needs chains, which you can’t craft. Find them in Swamp crypts or loot them from Wraiths.
  • Grinding Wheel: The final upgrade. Either find a wheelstone on the Plains or craft one at a Stonecutter. The latter is usually easier.

Valheim Artisan Table: New Materials and Secondary Stations

At first glance the Artisan Table seems modest, but it’s one of the game’s key junctions. You can craft it after defeating Moder in the Mountains and obtaining Dragon Tears. It’s essential for your journey into the Plains. With it you unlock the Spinning Wheel, Windmill, Blast Furnace, and Stone Oven. These secondary stations are crucial for progressing in Valheim.

There is one upgrade for the Artisan Table, crafted from black marble, bronze, and a majestic carapace. You’ll also only obtain that last item after a boss — the Queen in the Mistlands. This upgrade lets you build the Artisan Press, which in turn unlocks the final ship, the Drakkar.

Valheim Black Forge: Endgame Metals and Top-tier Weapons

Once you reach the Mistlands, you can use Yggdrasil wood, black marble, and black cores to build the Black Forge. It’s required for many endgame items. Here you’ll work with carapace, flametal, and other materials from the Mistlands and Ashlands. It supersedes the regular forge you built in the Black Forest and used up to this point.

The Black Forge has four upgrades:

  • Black Forge Cooler: Crafted from iron, copper, and black marble — build it right away.
  • Vise: Requires a mechanical spring, which you craft at the Artisan Table from refined eitr and iron.
  • Metal Cutter: Only craftable in the Ashlands with materials found there.
  • Gemcutter: The final upgrade also needs a bloodstone and Morgen sinew.

Valheim Galdr Table: Magic, Staves, and Upgrades

The last workstation focuses on Valheim’s magical side. You can only use the Galdr Table once you reach the Mistlands. Build it from Yggdrasil wood, black marble, black cores, and refined eitr. Then you can craft magical weapons and armor to unlock a new combat style.

The Galdr Table has three upgrades:

  • Rune Table: Build this first to upgrade your magical weapons.
  • Eternal Candles: Requires skeleton trophies and resin.
  • Feather Crown: A final upgrade using materials from the Ashlands.

Valheim Workstations: Conclusion and Upgrade Tips

Valheim’s workstation system is thoughtfully designed to keep unlocking new possibilities. Your base stations gain fresh capabilities through upgrades that are tied to the biome you’re exploring. Regularly check the build menu to see which stations you can improve with newly found items. Also ensure you have enough space so all add‑ons connect properly — Valheim shows a dotted line when an upgrade is linked. With the right upgrades and smart base layout, you’ll speed up crafting and repairs and gain access to much stronger gear.
