In Enshrouded you can not only embark on countless adventures across Embervale, but also build a cozy home of your own. The game offers a sophisticated building system and a wide variety of materials to choose from. Beyond housing for your survivors, animal husbandry, farming, and storage, a home is essential to rest and recover. And of course, it shouldn’t just be functional — it should look great, too! Today we’ll look at specific building tips in Enshrouded to help you create an awesome base.
1. Build a basement in Enshrouded for more space

Because you can mine out pretty much the entire world in Enshrouded, a basement is a fantastic idea. Many players forget that you can also dig down into the ground. This not only adds more space to your base, it can also spark new ideas. A basement can serve many purposes, whether as a storage room or a cozy reading nook.
To make a basement feel authentic, work with stone or other natural materials. This gives the room a wonderful look that blends into the surroundings. A small secret passage or an additional exit also works well to make your base accessible in different ways.
2. Support pillars and beams in the Enshrouded building system
Enshrouded’s materials lean toward a more medieval style, which you can use for inspiration. A key element is support pillars and beams that hold the roof or serve as extra decoration. These elements aren’t strictly necessary — blocks will stay up without supports — but they add depth and help your structures feel more immersive and believable. Columns can also help separate rooms and make them more visually appealing.
3. Mix materials in Enshrouded for floors and walls

If you’re building a structure with multiple floors, we recommend using different materials for the walls. You can take it a step further by choosing materials that suit the biome and make sense logically. Since each region in Enshrouded offers different resources, you can use them accordingly.
Stone feels cool, but also stable and resilient. Wood is less sturdy, but radiates a certain warmth. Create contrast to make your home feel interesting and varied. You can further distinguish floors with borders and decorative trim.
4. Design a garden in Enshrouded with walls and fences
Enshrouded provides a wide range of fences and walls out of the box that give your base a great look. But you don’t have to stick to presets — the complex building system lets you use virtually any building block as a fence. Use Voxel mode and match materials individually. Roof blocks actually work well as fences thanks to their unique, tapered shape.
5. Enshrouded water physics for wells, streams, and ponds

With Update 7, Enshrouded’s entire water system was overhauled, giving you even more ways to integrate it into your builds — and it’s absolutely worth it.
Water elements make your home and the surrounding base feel alive. Use drains and inlets to your advantage and craft a unique landscape. You can work with natural features like streams and ponds, as well as man-made elements like wells, pools, or mills. Let your imagination run wild and put the new water mechanics to the test.
6. Foundations in Enshrouded for level terrain
Another tip: don’t always search for perfectly flat land — adapt the environment to your needs instead. You can build anywhere as long as you can place a Flame Altar. How do you change the terrain? You don’t have to mine manually; simply use your build hammer and the largest foundation to clear land. The terrain is carved away when you build on it. Place and remove foundations to dig into a mountain, for example, or to level grass.
7. 360-degree rotation in Enshrouded for decor and building parts

Most building materials can be rotated based on Enshrouded’s invisible grid. But did you know there’s also a full 360-degree mode? To activate it, equip the decoration in your hand and press R and the right mouse button at the same time (shown at the bottom right).
A sphere appears around your item indicating all directions. You can now rotate the decor freely in any direction, without being tied to the grid. This is super handy for fine-tuning and using decorative elements in more varied ways.
8. Indirect lighting in Enshrouded with glowing blocks

Finally, a tip for the right lighting. Enshrouded currently has four blocks that emit light, making them perfect for hidden light sources. You can create blue, white, green, and yellow light, though the corresponding blocks are a bit expensive.
These glowing blocks work best as small accents and can be hidden behind trim or in the floor. They give your base a lovely atmosphere and let you experiment with different color tones. They also make great window “glass” to suggest the illusion of light shining through.
