Astroneer is a space sandbox game about exploration, resources, and building your own outposts. You land on alien planets, shape the terrain with the Terrain Tool, manage your oxygen, and upgrade your gear step by step. On your own Astroneer server, you can continue this journey persistently with friends and build a large planetary base together.

This wiki helps you set up your Astroneer server and reliably manage your shared world. Here you will find key basics for connecting to the server as well as for backing up and transferring save files.

More about the game and server

Astroneer was developed and published by System Era Softworks. Early Access began in 2016, before the game was officially released on February 6, 2019. Since then, Astroneer has been expanded with new content, systems, and features for exploration, building, and automation.

Astroneer: Gameplay and player experience

At the start, you only have a small set of tools and a limited oxygen network. With the Terrain Tool, you shape the environment, collect resources, and build the first modules for your base. Oxygen, power, and available materials determine how far you can venture from your starting point.

The different planets and moons vary in landscapes, resources, and hazards. New technologies require research and the right materials, which you often find only in specific regions. Vehicles, rovers, and transport modules help you cover greater distances and bring valuable resources back to base.

Over time, a small camp grows into an automated production facility. You can process resources, generate power, organize storage, and link production lines. This creates a calm yet demanding gameplay loop in which each new technology unlocks further possibilities for your base.

Astroneer multiplayer and your own server

Astroneer is especially well-suited for cooperative exploration and building. While one player searches for new resource deposits, another can expand the base, conduct research, or improve the power supply. Together, you can also prepare vehicles, open up hazardous areas, and carry out large construction projects.

A dedicated Astroneer server makes sense if you want your world to be accessible independently of any single player’s computer. Your bases, research progress, and collected resources remain stored in one persistent place. This lets anyone in the group keep playing even when the original host is not online.

Setting up and managing an Astroneer server

So your group can get started, the connection to the Astroneer server must be configured correctly. The server address and credentials must match the details in the game. If the server does not appear in the list, a direct connection using the correct server data will help.

Save files contain the progress of your shared world and should be backed up regularly. This is especially important if you have invested many hours into bases, automation, and exploring multiple planets. Before major changes or a migration, you can download the save from the server and upload an existing save file again.

The server should be stopped during transfers. This prevents ongoing write operations from changing the world file or producing an incomplete save. A current backup also gives you the option to quickly revert to a working state after an error.

Astroneer servers at 4Netplayers

At 4Netplayers, you can rent your own Astroneer server and run your planetary bases with friends permanently. The server handles continuous hosting and gives you a reliable meeting point for exploration, research, resource gathering, and collaborative building projects.
