Minecraft worlds are several million blocks across. And even if you’ll likely never cover those distances, you’ve probably explored or even built a few thousand blocks in every direction. That’s why fast travel is important: to get from A to B easily and explore many different corners of your world. But what is actually the absolute fastest way to travel? Today we’ll look at the ten best options, some simpler and others much trickier. And remember that in the Nether you can go even faster to connect different stations on your map.

10. Riding camels: fast and safe over land
Camels may seem slow at first glance, but they can cover 8 blocks per second. They also have a forward dash that’s perfect for crossing ravines or rivers. Dromedaries can also carry two players at once and protect you from mob attacks. So camels are absolutely a solid choice if you want to travel over land and enjoy the view.
9. Minecart on powered rail: rail transport in Minecraft
Minecarts are the oldest means of transport in Minecraft and are by no means the fastest way to travel anymore. Still, it can be fun to experiment with them. We covered this in our item transport guide (Minecraft: Item Transport Systems With and Without Redstone) . Amusingly, a minecart on powered rails is just as fast as a camel, at 8 blocks per second. But the setup with all those rails and Redstone eats resources, so it’s not always worth it.

8. Boots with Soul Speed: pace on soul sand
Soul Speed is an enchantment you can only find in Bastion remnants in the Nether or obtain from Piglins through bartering. It comes in three levels, with level 3 granting a speed of a little over 9 blocks per second. For it to work, you must run over soul sand or soul soil. The durability of your boots will steadily go down, so they won’t last forever and can break on the way. With Unbreaking III on netherite boots, however, you could run more than 17,000 blocks, which is a solid distance.
7. Sprint-jumping in a 2-block tunnel: faster mining highway
Your own legs can carry you far if you make the right preparations. You’ve probably noticed some players combine sprinting with jumping. That’s already faster than regular running. It gets even better when your jump is “caught,” for example by a 2-block-high ceiling. So if you sprint and jump in a tunnel with a 2-block-high ceiling, you can reach up to 9.7 blocks per second. This is especially worthwhile in mineshafts or corridors you’ve dug out. With ice under your feet, you can go even faster.

6. Breeding the fastest horse: up to 14 blocks per second
Horses in Minecraft can have different attributes, which changes their health, jump strength, and speed. Not every horse is equally fast, making finding and breeding different horses a great side activity in Minecraft. The average speed of a horse is 9.5 blocks per second, but with some luck and a few tries you can get one that covers more than 14 blocks per second. These horses are highly sought after and a wonderful way to travel long distances.
5. Throwing an Ender Pearl the right way: teleport tricks
Ender Pearls as a travel method are often forgotten, but they can save you in tight spots or make it easier to traverse tough terrain. How fast they are depends on how you throw the pearl. They always teleport you to the block where the pearl lands. The best throwing technique is to aim the pearl 15 degrees above the horizon. You can read this value on the F3 debug screen if you wish. With perfect execution you can cover around 23 blocks per second.

4. Boat on ice and blue ice: fastest Overworld highway
Boats have gone from one of the most annoying to one of the best transport options in Minecraft. After their steering was revamped, they became extremely practical and can be used not only on water. Normally, they’re as fast as camels and minecarts, about 8 blocks per second. Their true potential unfolds on ice. Use ice or packed ice to make the boat faster and cover long distances. That way you can reach up to 40 blocks per second. You’ll be even faster with blue ice, hitting over 72 blocks per second. This method is popular for Nether highways; you can read more in our article (How to Build a Nether Hub: Travel Faster in the Minecraft World) .
3. Perfect flight with Elytra: rockets and dive
For many players, the Elytra is the best travel method because it’s very practical and lets you fly across long distances. Combined with fireworks rockets, you can cover roughly 33 blocks per second. Elytra flight works as gliding. You go faster when you fly downward. You can exploit this mechanic to build up speed. The best pitch is 90 degrees downward, letting you reach up to 78 blocks per second.

2. Swimming with dolphins and enchantments: underwater tunnel
Underwater, you can get even faster. Multiple effects stack here to make you extremely quick. If you combine everything, you can reach up to 144 blocks per second. Underwater tunnels are therefore a valid method of travel, but the setup is considerably more demanding.
The mechanics include:
- Dolphin’s Grace
- the Depth Strider III enchantment
- the Soul Speed III enchantment plus a layer of soul soil
- the Potion of Swiftness
1. Elytra + trident with Riptide: record speed in the rain
By far the fastest way to travel is combining an Elytra with a trident enchanted with Riptide III. You can’t use it all the time, because it has to be raining. If it’s raining and you have the setup, you’ll cover more than 300 blocks per second. The speed can increase even further, but at high values the game often can’t keep up. Use this technique with caution, especially on weaker PCs.
Conclusion: How to travel fastest in Minecraft
Minecraft offers many methods to get you from one place to another quickly. Whether animals like camels and horses or enchantments like Soul Speed and Riptide, the options are very diverse. It’s worth testing different choices to see which ones you can use effectively in your own world.
