There are naturally plenty of trees in Minecraft, and thanks to many new updates, you also have access to various types of wood. However, for those who love building and being creative, the standard trees may quickly become boring. That’s why you should explore custom-built trees that give your world an extremely impressive and personal character. You can not only determine the growth direction but also the size, color, and appearance of your trees. Depending on the project, different types can be implemented. We’ll show you how it’s done!
Variety of Trees in Vanilla Minecraft

Minecraft itself offers a variety of trees that you can find throughout the world. Thanks to saplings, you can also grow them yourself and beautify your world (and, of course, gather wood). Even with that alone, you can do a lot, and most trees have different variations. These sometimes try to imitate real tree species, albeit rather primitively.
Trees from the Overworld
- Oak: Can be small or large. They are also found in swamps.
- Dark Oak: Consists of a thick trunk and dense foliage.
- Spruce: Can be broad (like a fir) or tall and without leaves.
- Birch: Only the length of the trunk changes.
- Jungle: Can grow as a single tree or with a trunk made of four blocks.
- Acacia: Have a flat and wide canopy.
- Azalea: A variation of oak, with colorful petals.
- Mangrove: Has dense foliage and deep roots.
- Cherry: Large trees with pink and bushy foliage.
- Pale Oak: Similar to Dark Oak, just paler.
Trees in Other Dimensions
- Giant Nether Mushrooms: Not exactly trees, but similar. They can be found with both warped and crimson fungi in the Nether. They take on a tree-like shape.
- Chorus Plant: The trees of the End, even if they don’t look like it.
Potential of Custom-Designed Minecraft Trees
Of course, with over ten different types, you can do quite a lot, but there aren’t that many variations of the vanilla trees. This can lead to your world not looking diverse or varied enough. Many grow in predetermined patterns that you can only partially control.
To make your world stand out and give it your own character, custom-created trees are one of the best ways! They immediately draw attention, and you have control over how they should look. Additionally, you can customize each tree individually and integrate it perfectly into your world.
Basic Principles of Custom-Designed Trees
Before we provide you with a detailed guide, let’s take a look at the fundamental elements that belong to every tree. These determine how the tree will look in the end and give you a good guideline. You can apply these to all subsequent trees, and our tutorial should serve as a kind of blueprint. We want to focus on a universal guide and not just provide a template. After all, you should be able to build yourself and apply these foundations accordingly. They can be transferred to just about any tree!
Purpose: As with any project, you need to consider what exactly you want to build. This also applies to self-created trees. Where should it stand? In a castle garden or on a mountain? Should the tree even serve as a dwelling itself? This alone determines many aspects of the later tree, such as its size and structure. You can, of course, adjust this parameter individually at any time.
Type of Tree: The first point directly determines this second aspect, namely the tree itself. You can orient yourself on real trees, where you will find enough pictures online as templates. And we recommend using photos if you’re unsure. The location is also crucial, as not all trees grow everywhere climatically. However, self-invented trees with a fantasy look are also possible, depending on how you want your world to look in the end.
More Than Just a Tree: It’s also important to think beyond Minecraft’s natural tree blocks. Don’t just use the rudimentary tree trunks, but also other blocks that match color-wise. You can also add more depth to branches using items like fences or walls, but more on that in the actual tutorial. In the end, no one will be bothered as long as the tree looks beautiful!
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Custom Trees
With the following guide, hopefully, every custom tree will succeed! We decided to build a larger oak next to our starter house (Building Ideas for Your First House: Step-by-Step Guide) to integrate it better into nature. But you can also use these steps for your ideas and follow along.
- Location: As explained in the basic principles, you need to choose a suitable location for the tree. It helps to know the dimensions of the tree and perhaps even stake them out. Those with good spatial awareness have an advantage here.

- Block Palette: Choose a color palette beforehand from which you want to build the trunk. Use one of the natural tree trunks as a template, or another color that better matches your selected type. We stuck with oak but added other brown blocks.

- Build the Trunk: Start by constructing the tree trunk and branches. Pay attention to a natural shape, with templates helping. Initially, limit yourself to one block before adding details later.

- Add the Canopy: Next, you can add the leaves. There are plenty of options in Minecraft, but you can also integrate other green blocks. Ensure a natural distribution of leaves, where they would grow in reality. They primarily grow at the ends of branches and twigs and less directly on the trunk. This is a feature that will set your trees apart from Minecraft’s trees.

- Detail Work: With the basics in place, you can proceed with the detail work. This means adjusting the texture of the trunk, adding roots, and expanding and better designing the leaves. This step can be time-consuming but is very enjoyable and gives your tree the final touch!
Conclusion
If you’re serious about your builds, you should also try to create your own trees. Minecraft’s vanilla trees are cool, but they don’t offer the variations and diversity you can create as a player. Rent your own Minecraft server with us and build a beautiful forest with custom-designed trees with your friends! It’s much more appealing than just using saplings and bone meal.
