Fishing was added to the game with Update 0.6, so it’s still a fairly new feature. That means some new players may not have tried it yet! Fishing is a great way to collect both Pals and items. The seas of Palpagos Island are packed with treasure, so it’s worth casting a line now and then. From time to time you’ll even reel in Alpha Pals or Pals with exceptionally strong passive skills you won’t want to miss. Today we’ll cover all the mechanics, what to watch out for, and which spots are best for fishing.

Palworld fishing basics: gear and the minigame

You’ll need a few things before you can fish. That includes the fishing rod itself as well as the right bait. Certain Pals can also help you fish faster and more efficiently with their partner skills. The further you progress in the game, the better your fishing capabilities become.

Fishing rods and bait in Palworld: how to gear up

Fishing rods and bait in Palworld for efficient fishing

There are currently 6 fishing rods in Palworld you can unlock and craft. They’re aimed at beginners (blue), intermediates (green), and experts (yellow), with two rods per tier. Each rod increases the size of the bar you see during fishing, making it easier to catch Pals.

All six rods at a glance:

  • Beginner Fishing Rod (Chillet): Technology level 15 with normal bar size
  • Beginner Fishing Rod (Gumoss): Schematic with x1.1 bar size
  • Intermediate Fishing Rod (Cattiva): Technology level 29 with x1.3 bar size
  • Intermediate Fishing Rod (Croajiro): Schematic with x1.4 bar size
  • Expert Fishing Rod (Pengullet): Technology level 45 with x1.8 bar size
  • Expert Fishing Rod (Depresso): Schematic with x1.9 bar size

You’ll also need bait to lure in Pals. There are four kinds. You craft them from Pal Juice or High-Quality Pal Oil and flour, plus other foods such as tomatoes, onions, or carrots. You can set up farms for these ingredients at your base.

The baits are:

  • Simple bait (no bonus)
  • High-Quality bait (increases bite rate)
  • Luxury bait (larger bar in the minigame)
  • Alluring bait (even larger bar and more item drops from caught Pals)

There’s also a Super Fishing Magnet, which you only unlock at level 61. It’s primarily for salvaging treasure, so it’s a late-game tool. You can search for treasure earlier, but you’ll have less luck.

Best partner skills and Pals for fishing in Palworld

Pals with partner skills for fishing in Palworld

Beyond rods and bait, certain Pals are extremely helpful thanks to special partner skills that improve your fishing. Keep an eye out for these four Pals:

  • Whalaska (Ignis): The catch meter starts slightly filled and fills faster while fishing.
  • Ghangler (Ignis): Pals bite faster when Ghangler is active.
  • Jellroy: More and better loot from salvage actions while fishing.
  • Jelliette: More items gained through fishing.

Palworld fishing minigame and salvaging explained

Fishing minigame in Palworld with catch meter step by step

With your preparations done, it’s time to fish. As in many survival games, you’ll complete a small minigame to land Pals and items. It’s straightforward, and you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

How fishing works:

  1. Find a suitable location where you can see shadows in the water.
  2. Aim your rod so you’re near a shadow of your choice.
  3. Select your bait and cast the rod.
  4. Wait patiently.
  5. When the yellow !! appears, click the left mouse button to hook it.
  6. Repeatedly click the left mouse button so the green bar tracks the yellow fish.
  7. Keep it up until the top circle fills and the Pal is caught.

Voilà! You’ve successfully landed a Pal and likely pulled some extra items from the sea. Your yields vary based on your gear, Pals, and location. You can also target specific Pals—watch the shadows and their sparkles.

Shadows and sparkles while fishing in Palworld hint at special Pals
  • No sparkles: normal Pal
  • Purple sparkles: Alpha Pal
  • Green sparkles: Pal with rainbow passive skills
  • Fountain of sparkles: Pal with the Pond Lord passive skill
Salvaging treasure on the open sea in Palworld

You can also search for treasure on the open sea—there are spots where you can perform salvage work. You must be riding a water Pal; otherwise, the option won’t be available. The Magnet can help you find rare items. The minigame here is different: a circle appears with a rotating yellow line—press F at the right moment when the yellow line is within the green segment.

Best fishing spots in Palworld: locations for Pals and loot

Best fishing spots on Feybreak Island and the oil rig in Palworld

You can find fishing spots all over the island—just look for shadows in the water. Different regions host different Pals. For a fully detailed map, we recommend PalDB, where you can filter by levels.

The best fishing spots are far in the south of the map, primarily on Feybreak Island, its dungeons, and the neighboring oil rig. You’ll also find the top salvage locations there—scan the seas between Feybreak and Mount Obsidian.

The Pals themselves may be less important than the loot—especially with the Magnet and the right locations, you can haul in immense riches.

What you can find:

  • Coralium Ore
  • Pal Souls
  • Blueprints for weapons and armor
  • Applied Work Books
  • Pal gear
  • Gold coins
  • Practice Primers
  • Spheres
  • Gems
  • Technical Manuals

Passive fishing at your Palworld base with fish ponds

Fish ponds at your Palworld base for passive fishing and loot

If you’d rather not fish yourself and prefer to passively gather Pals and items, set up a few fish ponds at your base. You unlock the first fish pond at level 31 and the second at level 55. Equip each with bait and assign a Pal with Handiwork to passively collect items and Pals. Larger shadows yield rarer finds. The loot pool matches what you can obtain from regular fishing or salvaging.

Conclusion: fishing in Palworld for rare items and Pals

Fishing in Palworld isn’t just a pleasant pastime—it becomes extremely important later for rare items. You can start early by unlocking your first rod at level 15 to hunt for various Pals or fish up useful items. Keep upgrading your gear to secure better Pals and loot. You can also leverage partner skills like those of Whalaska or Jellroy to your advantage.
