The first Minecraft Live 2026 livestream has wrapped and brought plenty of exciting news for the game. With Tiny Takeover, the first drop is already around the corner, and Chaos Cubed has been confirmed as the second small update of the year. We take a closer look at both and what you can look forward to this spring and summer in Minecraft. Expect adorable baby mobs, long-awaited crafting recipes, and a new cave biome.

Minecraft version numbers 2026: New numbering system for drops 26.1 and 26.2

If you have been playing snapshots recently or already have the new drop available, you have probably noticed the new version numbering for Minecraft. The goal is to reduce confusion. All new drops are now tied to their year and quarter. Previously, major updates were numbered incrementally, from release 1.0 up to 1.21. That changes starting in 2026.

The new format follows the current year, in this case 26. That is followed by the drop number. Tiny Takeover is 26.1, and Chaos Cubed is 26.2. Small patches or bug fixes add another digit, for example 26.1.1. So if you update to the new version or upgrade your server, do not be thrown off by the new format.

Minecraft Tiny Takeover 26.1: March update with baby mobs and the Golden Dandelion

Snapshots for the first drop of 2026, Tiny Takeover, have been running since the start of the year. It is all about baby animals, which were previously just miniature versions of their parents. That is changing, as every creature in Minecraft is getting a refresh. On top of that, two handy recipes will help you bond more closely with your animals. The drop releases on March 24, 2026.

Minecraft baby mobs: New models, textures, and sounds

New Minecraft baby mobs with their own models and sounds in the Tiny Takeover 26.1 update

Baby animals have been around since 1.0 and the introduction of breeding, but for 15 years they were basically just scaled-down adults. Now babies get their own models and textures, bringing fresh life to your farm.

Literally every mob that can have offspring has been reworked—from cows, sheep, and pigs to zombies, turtles, and even squids. They are cuter and have unique sounds. Some even have distinct personalities, including regal cats and grumpy cows with different vocalizations. It is genuinely fun to interact with all the little ones.

Rabbits received a complete overhaul as well—even the parents have a new model. They are fluffier and chunkier, with new animations. It is worth keeping an eye out for the different rabbit variants.

Golden Dandelion in Minecraft: Keep animals young forever

The Golden Dandelion in Minecraft keeps baby mobs permanently small in the 26.1 update

You can keep your favorites small forever. With the new Golden Dandelion, baby animals stay small and will not grow up. That is perfect if you love a particular look or texture. Place a regular dandelion in the center and surround it with eight gold nuggets to craft a Golden Dandelion. Feed it to a baby, and it will not mature. You can reverse this by feeding the animal another Golden Dandelion. Particle effects show you the animal’s current state.

Crafting Name Tags in Minecraft: New recipe and adjustments

Another big change follows the previous drop that finally let you craft saddles. Now it is Name Tags’ turn with a dedicated recipe. A nugget (iron, copper, or gold) and a piece of paper placed diagonally are enough to craft a Name Tag—perfect for giving your new animals unlimited nicknames.

As a result, Name Tags have been removed from some loot pools. Librarians no longer sell them, and they no longer appear in woodland mansions or ancient cities. Instead, you can now find them with the wandering trader.

Minecraft Chaos Cubed 26.2: Summer drop with Sulfur Caves, cinnabar, and Sulfur Cubes

The Minecraft Live livestream also announced the next drop, which brings new gameplay mechanics and a new biome. Underground, you will be able to find Sulfur Caves with unique red and yellow blocks to mine. You will also encounter a new mob, the Sulfur Cube. Snapshots for the second 2026 drop are expected to begin in April, with the update landing in June or July.

Sulfur Caves in Minecraft: Cinnabar and sulfur blocks as new building materials

Alongside lush caves and dripstone caves, another underground biome is joining the world. Sulfur Caves are made up of yellow sulfur blocks and red cinnabar blocks, making them easy to recognize. You will also find pools that give off strange smells. Thanks to potent sulfur, bubbles rise to the surface—an impressive visual effect. Do not bathe in them, or you will get nauseous.

The new building blocks are particularly exciting. With yellow sulfur and red cinnabar, two fresh block palettes are coming to the game. Shown so far are polished and decorated variants, plus bricks, walls, stairs, and slabs for both stone types—opening up tons of decorative building options.

Sulfur Cube mob: Inherits block properties for creative sandbox gameplay

New Sulfur Cube mob in Minecraft inherits block properties in the Chaos Cubed update

Sandbox players will find the Sulfur Cubes especially intriguing. Inspired by green slimes and nether magma cubes, they do not attack you. You will encounter them in the Sulfur Caves.

Sulfur Cubes have a unique ability: they absorb a block and adopt its properties. The full extent of this feature is not yet known, but we have already seen a few examples. Ice makes them slipperier, metal blocks make them heavier, and wool makes them lighter. This promises highly creative sandbox gameplay.

Conclusion on the 2026 Minecraft updates: Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed at a glance

With Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed, two of the usual four drops of the year are known. Old features are being overhauled while new locations and mobs are added. There are entirely new baby models with unique sounds, craftable Name Tags, and the Golden Dandelion. Soon, Sulfur Caves with new building blocks and the unique Sulfur Cubes will join the game.
