In Hytale, you’ll use a range of workbenches to craft items. That can be confusing at first, because you need an overview of which things you can make where. Once you’ve set up all the benches, you’ll be well prepared for your Hytale adventure. Workbenches may change during Early Access, but here’s what’s currently possible and what makes each bench special.

Hytale Workbenches: Getting started and crafting tips

Hytale workbenches crafting tips at the workbench

First, craft a Workbench in your backpack, because from there you can select the other workbenches via a separate tab. The Workbench itself lets you craft all tools, like pickaxes and axes. There’s also a final section for general items and, very importantly, your backpack upgrade.

Each workbench also has these characteristics:

  • Items can be pulled from nearby chests, which makes crafting easier. The radius was increased with Update 1, so chests further away are now used as well. There can still be issues with chest prioritization.
  • Most workbenches use a tier system you can upgrade to unlock more recipes. However, not all tiers are available yet.
  • Use the Scrapper to break down old tools into their components.

In the next section, we’ll go through all stations in detail and group them into their respective categories. Most benches come in pairs. This helps you stay oriented and use them separately, since they often require similar items.

Smelting ores and tanning leather: Furnace and Tanning Rack

Hytale smelt ores and tan leather with the Furnace and Tanning Rack

These two stations require manual operation, but they convert gathered items into other useful materials. The Furnace turns ores into ingots, and the Tanning Rack turns hides into leather. It can be worth placing two or three of each to process more in parallel.

  • Furnace: Smelt your ores, from copper to adamantite. For fuel, you can use anything found in nature, like fibers, sticks, or logs. This produces charcoal, which you can then use as fuel. If you hover over the empty slot, the valid materials are shown. You can upgrade the furnace to smelt faster and handle more ores.
  • Tanning Rack: Leather is an important resource you can obtain from animals. Use the rack to dry hides into leather. This bench also has an upgrade that speeds up drying. You need to add hides manually.

Crafting weapons and armor: Weaponsmith and Armorsmith

Combat is a key part of Hytale, and you should be prepared. Equip yourself with the best weapons and armor before heading out. Use different weapon types to your advantage and see what suits you best.

  • Weaponsmith: As the name suggests, this bench lets you craft new weapons from better ores. Weapons are organized into different tabs. This lets you pick your own combat style and try different options. There are swords, axes, maces, daggers, and bows. Currently, you can upgrade the Weaponsmith to Tier 3.
  • Armorsmith: You also need armor to protect yourself. Crafting works similarly to weapons, and you’ll need lots of ingots and leather to make armor pieces. You can also craft shields here.

Cooking and farming: Food, saplings, and animal supplies

Hytale cooking and farming: agriculture and cooking station

In Hytale you can farm and then use your harvest to cook tasty dishes. While farming is already well developed, there’s not much to do with cooking yet. It’s still worth checking out both benches.

  • Farmer’s Workbench: This is currently the most complex station in your arsenal. Progress through various crops up to Tier 10 to unlock new cultivation options. Here you can get tree saplings, stock up on animal supplies, craft natural blocks, and work with Life Essence. Farming is a lot of fun and gives you the ingredients to cook.
  • Cooking Station: There’s not a lot to cook yet, but you should still do it. Cooked items restore more health and regenerate you faster. You can also process animal products like eggs and milk here. Upgrades are not available yet.

Blocks and decoration: Building, furniture, and variants

Hytale blocks and decoration: variants and furniture

When it comes to building, Hytale already offers a lot if you look at these two benches. You can convert almost any block into other variants to build great houses. There are also furniture and decorations to make your home cozy.

  • Artisan Workbench: Place a block in the slot to see which variants you can make. From slabs and stairs to fences, roof tiles, and decorations, there’s a lot to explore.
  • Furniture Workbench: This bench is already extensive and lets you work with various decorations. You can craft different chests, beds, light sources, wool and clay, as well as seasonal decor. Future updates will surely add even more options.

Magic and potions: Alchemy and the Arcane

Hytale magic and potions: alchemy and arcanist

You can only craft these last two benches once you reach Tier 2 of the regular Workbench. You’ll also need rarer items. This unlocks Hytale’s magical side with some exciting possibilities.

  • Alchemist Workbench: You’ve probably found potions in some dungeons already, but here you can brew them yourself. You can also brew potions that temporarily transform you into animals. Finally, you can craft bombs here too.
  • Arcanist Workbench: Use this to craft portals that let you teleport. You can also open portals to other worlds that showcase the upcoming World Generation V2. Wands and other magical features are still in development.

Conclusion: How to advance your progress in Hytale

Hytale relies on various workbenches to help you progress. Use them to experience different aspects of the game. You can focus on combat or dive into farming. Hytale gives you plenty of freedom to tailor your gameplay. Keep an eye on upgrades to unlock new recipes.
