Since Hytale has only been out for a short time, there are naturally many features that aren’t widely known yet. Some of them also aren’t obvious, which makes them harder to discover. We’ve tracked down several of these features for you and summarized them here. If you’re still looking for beginner tips, we’ve got the right guide for you as well (Hytale Beginner Tips: 8 Tricks for a Perfect Start) . Keep in mind that Hytale is still in active development, so plenty of details may change over time.

Hytale tip: Show block outline for precise building

Hytale show block outline with Block Placement Preview set to All

A genuinely helpful trick for anyone who loves building. In Settings, search for “Block Placement Preview” and set it to “All” to always see the outline of the block in your hand. Try this setting and see if it suits you. Of course, you can switch it back anytime. We find it’s a huge aid for building and makes placing blocks much easier.

Place Hytale food: Set food items as decoration

With this setting enabled, you’ll also notice an outline when holding food. That’s not a coincidence: you can place food items as well. Crouch, then click the spot you want with the food in hand. Later, you can pick the food back up and stash it in your bag. This is great for decorating your kitchen authentically.

Hytale Builder’s Workbench: Hidden options and material variants

Hytale Builder's Workbench with options like slabs, stairs, ornaments, and columns

In the Builder’s Workbench, you can convert materials into decorative options like slabs, stairs, ornaments, or columns. But this workbench hides a few functions that aren’t obvious at first glance.

Take cobblestone as an example, which you get from mining stone. You can turn it back into regular stone. Unlike Minecraft, you don’t use a furnace for this — you do it right in the Builder’s Workbench. When you place cobblestone in the slot, you can switch between different versions in that field. It’s easy to miss because players tend to focus on the field to the right. You can also swap between variants for other materials, like wood.

Hytale shovel: Clear dirt faster and level terrain

Hytale iron shovel for faster removal of multiple dirt blocks

Since you can currently only craft a shovel from iron, some players may have overlooked it. You should definitely make one if you want dirt out of the way. The shovel lets you break multiple blocks at once. Don’t miss out on this if you’re digging out a big hill or flattening an area. Later, you can turn dirt into grass with fibers at the Farmer’s Workbench, though it’s already been announced that grass will grow on its own in a future update.

Hytale loot: Smash crates and barrels for valuable items

Hytale smash crates and barrels in ruins for loot like hides and salt

In camps, abandoned ruins, and other points of interest, you’ve probably noticed crates and barrels tucked into corners. They look decorative at first, but they’re not just for show. Smash them with your sword to find some great goodies.

Alongside apples and berries, you’ll also find more important items you should grab. Hides are common in these containers, and salt is stored there too. To stock up, break every crate and barrel you can find.

Hytale salt blocks: How to get them from fish traps

Hytale obtain salt blocks from fish traps and process them at the cooking station

Speaking of salt, you’ve likely spotted the recipe at the cooking station to convert one salt block into 5 salt. But where do you get salt blocks? You probably haven’t come across them during your travels. That’s because you can currently only obtain salt blocks from fish traps.

Craft a fish trap in the Farmer’s Workbench, place it in deep water, and wait about one day for a catch. Using fish bait increases your chance of fish. You’ll get salt blocks at roughly a 27% chance per catch. You can then convert one block into five salt to make tasty popcorn or a Caesar salad.

Hytale biomes: More variety beyond the main island

Hytale map with zones and biomes around the main island

Hytale currently features four different zones, which we’ve already covered (Hytale zones explained: biomes, ores, and mobs) . But they have an interesting generation pattern that not everyone notices.

In general, Hytale has a main island where you spawn first. In the center is Zone 1 with lush green forests. Zone 3 lies to the north and Zone 2 to the south. Surrounding them are the dark islands of Zone 4. You can, of course, explore beyond that, where biomes start to blend together. If you’re after diverse biomes, be prepared to travel far.

Hytale oceans: Ruins, coral reefs, and sunken ships

You’ll also come across oceans, which are hard to explore right now because you run out of air. But take a dive and you’ll discover a whole different world. There will likely be better diving options later, but even now Hytale’s waters are worth a look. You’ll find ruins, coral reefs, and even sunken ships. At the moment, the ocean is especially great for farming plenty of gold.

Hytale mushroom farming: Use spreading for tasty skewers

Hytale farm mushrooms by letting them spread on grass for various recipes

Crops like corn aren’t the only things you can farm. Mushrooms also have a hidden mechanic you might recognize from Minecraft. Place a mushroom on grass, and after a while you’ll notice it spreading. This lets you multiply a single mushroom into many and use them in different recipes.

Conclusion: Make the most of Hytale’s hidden features

Because Hytale is still very new, there are plenty of hidden features many players don’t know yet. We hope we’ve highlighted a few of these and helped make your life in Hytale a bit easier. Keep in mind that updates can always change things. Hytale is constantly evolving, and lots of great additions are surely on the way.
