Farming is one of the branches in Hytale that is already quite advanced in the current Early Access. With an upgradable workbench, over a dozen different crops, and plenty of other features, it’s definitely worth taking a close look at the Farmer’s Workbench and all its facets. So today we’re diving into farming in Hytale, because there are already many great features you should know. From the Farmer’s Workbench sections, to cultivation techniques, all the way to Eternal Seeds, there are many nuances that will likely expand with upcoming updates.

Hytale Farmer’s Workbench: Tools, Seeds, and Decorative Blocks

Farmer's Workbench in Hytale with tools and recipes

To start farming, you first need to build the Farmer’s Workbench. Open the tab for all workbenches at the regular workbench and use 6x logs and 20x plant fibers for the recipe. Place the Farmer’s Workbench anywhere, ideally where it can also detect other chests.

The Farmer’s Workbench has six sections with the following functions:

  • Tools, animal supplies, and garden equipment
  • Crafting seeds for your fields
  • Crafting saplings for new trees
  • Converting crops into Essence of Life
  • Flower pots
  • Decorative blocks like grass, vines, stones, and other natural blocks

Farmer’s Workbench upgrades in Hytale

As you can see, the Farmer’s Workbench is complex and offers many ways to fill Hytale’s world with green life. Like most workbenches, you can upgrade it by meeting the requirements shown on the right. There are ten tiers, significantly more than any other, so you’ll be busy for a while.

The higher you go, the more functions you unlock. This is especially important for more seed options, but you’ll also unlock new saplings and tools as you improve the bench.

Upgrades for the first eight tiers require:

  • Greater Essence of Life (crafted by combining 100x Essence of Life)
  • Crops in increasing quantities, up to 60x items
  • Various wood types in growing quantities, some of which are hard to find

For the last two tiers, you’ll also need petals from rare plants. Azure, Blood, and Storm Petals are found mainly in other biomes, so you’ll have to travel. In total you need 300 of each.

Planting fields in Hytale: irrigation, layout, and lighting

Hytale farming with watering can and field irrigation

Let’s look at the basics of farming and how to set up and manage fields in Hytale. You’ll recognize a lot from other survival games, but some aspects work differently here.

Have these tools ready:

  • Pickaxe or shovel to lay out the field
  • Hoe, which can be upgraded later
  • Water bucket for scooping or from temples
  • Watering can

Also gather Essence of Life to craft your first seeds. Collect crops in the overworld, such as wheat or corn, which you can find almost everywhere. Then use the essences at the Farmer’s Workbench to craft your first seeds.

Regular soil can be tilled with the hoe. You can plant seeds directly. Without two important conditions, however, they grow very slowly. They won’t wither, so if that’s good enough for you, you can just plant them.

First, tilled soil needs water so plants grow faster. There are two options:

  • Fill the watering can at a water source and water fields manually.
  • Use water holes to automatically irrigate the four orthogonally adjacent plots.

Note that Hytale currently has no infinite water source. If you scoop water with a bucket, it won’t flow back. With the watering can this is no problem—you can use a single source indefinitely. We therefore recommend building a well and then watering manually with the can. Wet soil stays wet for a while, so replant promptly.

Second, plants need light to grow. Place torches or other light sources so your crops get plenty of light. You’ll see and hear when they advance a growth stage. You can speed up growth later with fertilizer.

Using crops and crafting Essence of Life

Cooking with your harvest at the cooking station in Hytale

Tending fields is a relaxing activity. As you progress through the Farmer’s Workbench tiers, you’ll discover new vegetables and plants over and over. Of course, that also has practical benefits.

Use your harvest at the cooking station to prepare tasty dishes. This is still rudimentary for now, but cooking in Hytale will surely become more complex with future updates. Always carry a snack to heal yourself. You can trade for additional recipes in the Forgotten Temple using essences.

Harvesting also gives you Essence of Life, which you can use to craft new seeds. You can also invest essence in new tools, saplings for trees, or potions.

Obtaining Eternal Seeds in Hytale

Eternal Seeds on a planted Hytale field

To avoid crafting new seeds all the time, there are Eternal Seeds. These stay planted forever and keep regrowing. Each harvest has a 0.5% chance to drop this green seed. With continued Farmer’s Workbench upgrades and your memories in the Forgotten Temple, you can craft Eternal Seeds. They are extremely expensive, so expect to work toward them for several hours. It’s worth it to always have enough food.

Conclusion: Optimize Hytale farming and have fun

Farming in Hytale is already more complex than many other Early Access features and offers hours of fun. Grow your crops and use the essences you collect for new seeds or other purposes. The challenge of completing all tiers is definitely there. Features like animal supplies exist but are still less developed. That will surely expand in future updates.
