Animals populate many regions in Hytale. They don’t just add atmosphere — they’re also essential for certain resources. Even though the system is still in its early stages and there’s plenty of room for improvement, keeping animals is already a smart idea. Once breeding arrives, you’ll be able to expand your farm and gather far more resources. Let’s look at which animals are currently in the game and how to find, tame, and start using them.

Finding Hytale animals: zones and spawn locations

Find and tame all Hytale animals by zone

Hytale already offers a wide variety of animals you can discover and bring to your farm. Not all of them have a specific function yet, but who knows what features will be added in the future. If you’ve unlocked portals, you can even lead animals through them to bring them straight to a fenced area at your base.

Each species also has young animals, which currently don’t have a direct purpose. They don’t grow and won’t provide resources. And since breeding isn’t in the game yet, you can mostly ignore them — unless you don’t want to separate them from their parents, in which case feel free to bring them along.

Animals from Zone 1 (Emerald Wilds):

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Rabbit
  • Horse
  • Goat
  • Mosshorn
  • Sheep
  • Cow
  • Pig
  • Feral pig
  • Boar

Animals from Zone 2 (Howling Sands):

  • Warthog
  • Ram
  • Camel
  • Desert chicken
  • Skrill

Animals from Zone 3 (Whisperfrost Frontiers):

  • Rabbit
  • Cow
  • Boar
  • Mouflon
  • Bison

There are no animals you can tame directly in Zone 4. You’ll find some undead cows and other creature-like beings there, but you can’t lure them home — which is probably for the best.

Luring and taming animals: building your farm

While many animal systems are still missing, you can already lure and tame creatures to befriend them and make use of their products. Taming removes their fear of you and also lets you pet them — always a bonus. Tamed animals can provide resources and some can even be ridden. More features will come later.

Building pens: safe enclosures for animals

To keep your animals safe, build them a proper pen. Enclosures can still be a bit buggy, so play it safe. Animals can run off despite being tame or get eaten by wolves — which you definitely don’t want.

We recommend pens with the following:

  • At least two fence blocks high so nothing can escape or get in.
  • A floor made of solid material (wood or stone) where monsters can’t spawn.
  • Light sources to keep the area well lit.
  • A gate for easy entry and exit.

Farmer’s Workbench: essential tools for livestock

Hytale Farmer's Workbench tools for livestock

Check the Farmer’s Workbench to craft important tools for working with animals. As you progress the workbench, you’ll unlock more ways to get value from your livestock.

  • Feed Bag: You can craft feed bags, but they don’t have a clear use yet. You can place them in a pen, though it’s unclear if animals eat from them or if they have any effect.
  • Wooden Bucket: Use it to milk cows and obtain milk.
  • Shears: Use them to shear sheep.
  • Chicken Coop: A small house where chickens can lay eggs. You need to assign captured chickens to the coop using a Capture Crate.
  • Capture Crate: Used to catch small animals and young animals.
  • Fertilizer Bag: Crafted from dung produced by livestock to speed up crop growth.

Feed list: which foods animals follow

Various crops are key for capturing and taming animals. Every species has its favorite treat. When you encounter one of the animals above, press F to see its preferred food. Then hold that item in your hand and feed it to the animal. Hearts will appear and it will follow you while you’re holding the food, letting you guide it safely into its pen.

Vegetables and fruit for the right animals:

  • Apple: goats, mouflon, billy goats
  • Eggplant: feral pig
  • Carrot: rabbits, horses
  • Cauliflower: bison
  • Chili: Skrill
  • Corn: chickens, turkeys
  • Cotton: desert chickens
  • Lettuce: cows, sheep
  • Onion: warthog
  • Potato: Mosshorn
  • Pumpkin: boar
  • Tomato: camel
  • Turnip: pig

Animal products in Hytale: collecting and processing

Animal products in Hytale like milk, eggs, wool, and fertilizer

Once you’ve tamed animals, they become useful. There are already several resources you can only get from them, primarily for crafting other items. You can also ride horses, billy goats, and camels once tamed.

Currently obtainable:

  • Dung: Dropped occasionally by almost every animal; used to make fertilizer.
  • Eggs: If you assign chickens to a Chicken Coop, you can collect one egg per day. Eggs are used for dough.
  • Milk: Use the bucket on cows to get milk for cheese. You can also milk Mosshorns, but you probably shouldn’t drink the green milk.
  • Wool Scraps: Shear sheep to get wool scraps, then use the Furniture Workbench to craft Wool and Cloth and dye them. Learn more in our article (Hytale Furniture & Builder's Workbench: Furniture, Blocks, Lighting) .
  • Moss: Mosshorns can sometimes drop moss.
  • White Feathers: Use shears on chickens to obtain white feathers, currently only needed for the Harvest Trophy.
  • Red Feathers: Shear Skrills for red feathers, which currently have no use.

There is no direct animal breeding or reproduction yet (as of Update 4). The feature is planned for later, so getting key animals now will put you ahead. A trust system is also planned so animals become more confident around you, but details are still unknown.

Conclusion: keep animals for vital resources in Hytale

There are already many different animals to find in Hytale that you can tame and capture, and some already provide products used in recipes. More features are planned, including breeding and additional systems. Even now, it’s worth setting up a small farm and collecting as many animals as you can.

If you don’t want to miss a Hytale update and want to jump in right away, rent one of our Hytale servers and play together with friends. As animals become more useful, you’ll be ready to go.
