The world of Embervale isn’t just packed with monsters, it’s also home to friendly fauna waiting to be tamed. Raising animals is a fun aspect of Enshrouded that many players overlook. Not only are the animals adorable, they also provide key resources for cooking recipes and other activities. Sooner or later, you should take a closer look at the different species and decide which ones to keep. A barn is a great way to expand and liven up your base. We’ll cover which animals you can find, how to tame them, and how to breed them later on.
Unlock animal taming in Enshrouded: Farmer quests and bait

You may have already come across a few animals on your journey through Enshrouded, but you can only tame them once you have the right bait. You unlock these baits by completing various quests for the Farmer. Rescue her from the Ancient Vault and she’ll give you new ways to interact with the flora and fauna of Embervale.
The specific questline about animal taming starts with finding a goat. Step by step, you’ll learn how to care for animals and later unlock other types of bait to tame new species.
Enshrouded: step-by-step animal taming

Taming animals isn’t hard, but it does require a bit of patience. Different species are scattered across the map, so you’ll have to search for them.
- Select the right bait from the Farmer’s crafting list and make it with the required ingredients. Some you’ll need to harvest yourself. See our crops guide: (Enshrouded Farming Guide: Grow Plants, Soil & Update 7) .
- Find your target animal and equip the bait in your inventory. Crouch and toss the bait toward the animal.
- When the animal is distracted, sneak closer. Watch for the ? icon. If it appears, stop and wait until it disappears.
- Pet the animal to fill its hearts. Some animals have more hearts than others.
- Repeat until all hearts are filled.
- Put the animal into your inventory to bring it home to your barn.
Enshrouded animals: locations, produce, and drops

You’re probably wondering which animals are out there. Enshrouded features both familiar and fantastical creatures you can tame and harvest produce from. Some items come directly from tamed animals, others only by hunting for meat, hides, and bones.
Most produce (meat, milk, eggs) can be used in cooking recipes to gain temporary buffs. Bones are useful for furniture and to make bone meal. You’ll need leather for armor and feathers for arrows. The new capybara bristles help with fishing (Enshrouded Fishing Guide: Bait, Rods, Fish & Locations) , and are also used for armor.

Build a barn in Enshrouded: happiness, feed, and protection

Once you’ve successfully caught animals, you need to build them a place to live. Don’t let them stay at your base without proper infrastructure, or they won’t produce anything and can’t breed. Animals need three things to stay happy. You can see their needs when a speech bubble with red icons appears.
Shelter with a roof: Don’t keep your animals out in the open. Give them a safe retreat with a solid roof to protect them from the elements. They don’t need to be indoors all the time, but they should have the option.
Sleeping spot: The sleeping spot must be under a roof and serve as their retreat. Each animal needs its own basket, which you can craft at the Farmer from twigs, fibers, straw, and wood. There are small and large cushions for different sizes.
Food: Just as important is feed. Each species has its own feeding bowl you craft from wood, nails, and metal scraps. Each animal also has its own feed, similar to the baits you craft with the Farmer. Make sure the feeding bowls stay filled.
We also recommend fencing in your animals and protecting them from monsters. Some aggressive enemies will attack animals, which you definitely want to prevent.
Breeding animals in Enshrouded and farming produce

You can also breed the animals you’ve tamed. This is handy because you won’t always have to craft new bait, and you can cull older animals for resources. All animals, except pets, breed automatically when their needs are met.
- Needs like roof, sleeping spot, and food must be fulfilled.
- At least one free bed for a new animal.
- A bit of time and patience.
New babies will appear on their own; you don’t have to do anything. The more free beds you have, the more animals will be produced. Babies remain small until you manually grow them up by approaching and pressing E. If you keep them as babies, they’re very cute, but they won’t produce any items.
Conclusion: Breeding, barns, and buffs in Enshrouded
Animal husbandry is a great pastime in Enshrouded, and it’s also mechanically useful. Whether for tasty recipes, sturdier armor, fishing, or furniture: these resources make life in Embervale much easier. Build barns for your animals and take good care of them so they breed. The unique dogs and cats are adorable too and provide helpful buffs for your adventures.
