In Enshrouded you can of course not only embark on countless adventures across the world of Embervale, but also build a cosy home of your own. The game offers a sophisticated building system and a wide range of materials to choose from. Alongside accommodation for your survivors, animal husbandry, farming and storage, a home is essential for getting your strength back. But it shouldn’t be merely functional — it ought to look great, too! So today we’re looking at specific building tips in Enshrouded to help you create a brilliant base.

1. Build a cellar in Enshrouded for extra space

Because you can dig out almost the entire world in Enshrouded, a cellar is a fantastic idea. Many players forget that you can also dig down into the ground. This not only gives your base more space, it can also inspire new ideas. A cellar can serve many purposes, whether as a storage room or a cosy reading nook.

For an authentic cellar feel, try working with stone or natural materials. That gives the room a wonderful look that blends perfectly with the surroundings. A small secret passage or an additional exit is also a great way to make your base accessible in different ways.

2. Support pillars and beams in the Enshrouded building system

Enshrouded’s materials lean towards a medieval style, and you can certainly take your cues from that. A key element is support pillars and beams that hold the roof or serve as additional decoration. They aren’t strictly necessary, as blocks don’t require supports, but they add depth to your structures and help them feel more immersive and authentic. Columns can also help divide spaces and make them more visually appealing.

3. Mix materials in Enshrouded for storeys and walls

If you’re building multiple storeys, we recommend using different materials for the walls. You can take this a step further by choosing building materials that fit the biome and feel logical. Each region in Enshrouded offers different materials, which you can put to use accordingly.

Stone tends to feel cool, yet sturdy and resilient. Wood is less sturdy but brings a sense of warmth. Create contrast to make your home feel engaging and varied. You can further distinguish storeys with trims and mouldings.

4. Design a garden in Enshrouded with walls and fences

Enshrouded provides a wide range of fences and walls out of the box to give your base a great look. But you don’t have to stick to those presets, because the complex building system lets you use virtually any building block as a fence. Use the voxel mode for this and tailor the materials to taste. Roof blocks actually make great fences, thanks to their unique, tapered shape.

5. Enshrouded water physics for wells, rivers and ponds

With Update 7, the entire water system in Enshrouded was completely overhauled, giving you even more ways to incorporate it into your builds. And we think it’s absolutely worth it.

Water features make your home and surrounding base feel alive. Use drains and inlets to your advantage and create a unique landscape. You can work with natural elements like rivers and ponds, as well as man-made features such as wells, pools or mills. Let your imagination run wild and put the new water mechanics through their paces.

6. Foundations in Enshrouded for levelling terrain

Another tip is not to chase a perfectly flat spot, but instead adapt the surroundings to your needs. You can build anywhere as long as you can place a Flame Altar. So how do you change the terrain? There’s no need to mine manually — simply use your Builder’s Hammer and the largest foundation to make sections of land disappear. Terrain is removed when you build on it. Place and remove foundations to, for example, dig into a hill or level grassy areas.

7. 360-degree rotation in Enshrouded for decor and building parts

Most building materials can be rotated along Enshrouded’s invisible grid. But did you know there’s also a full 360-degree mode? To activate it, hold the decoration in your hand and press R and the right mouse button at the same time (as described in the bottom right).

A kind of sphere will appear around your item, showing all directions. You can then rotate the decor freely without being bound to the grid. This is super handy for fine-tuning and using decorative elements in different ways.

8. Indirect lighting in Enshrouded with glowing blocks

Finally, a tip for the right lighting. In Enshrouded there are currently four blocks that emit light, making them perfect for hidden light sources. You can create blue, white, green and yellow light, even if the corresponding blocks are a bit pricey.

These glowing blocks are best used as small accents and can be neatly hidden behind trims or in the floor. This gives your base a lovely ambience and lets you play with different colours. They also work wonderfully as window panes to suggest the illusion of light streaming in.

Conclusion: Master building in Enshrouded and create your dream base

Enshrouded has an extremely deep building system that gives you incredible freedom. Using it effectively takes some practice and plenty of creativity. With a few simple tips and tricks, even beginners can create great structures, as long as they follow some basic building principles. It’s important to add depth and build with variety. You should also make full use of the building tools, from the 1x1 mode to 360-degree rotation for decorations. And remember, you can always shape the terrain to your liking and establish your base in more remote spots.
