Resin was added to Minecraft with ‘The Garden Awakens’ in version 1.21.4 and is a building block many players underestimate. That’s partly down to its rarity, as it can only be found in a specific biome. Yet resin has a beautiful, vibrant orange hue that’s fantastic for building, so it’s well worth farming automatically. Resin can be made renewable in a unique way, which takes a bit more effort. We’ll look at the mechanics in detail and show you how to build a farm.

Minecraft resin: where to find it, the Knarz, and drop sources

Finding resin in Minecraft in a pale oak forest with the Knarz

Like in real life, resin is found on trees. However, not every tree type in Minecraft yields resin, which makes things a little tricky. You’ll need to seek out a pale oak forest, because only there can you find the orange resin. These eerie, spooky woods are a sub-biome of the dark oak forest and are made up of grey oaks you really can’t miss. The sky also turns grey-white when you’re there. They can be very small or take over a large section of a dark oak forest, depending on the seed. There are several ways to obtain resin, which come with some fun mechanics:

  • Break a Knarz Heart to get 1 to 3 resin clumps. With Silk Touch you can harvest the Knarz Heart itself.
  • Resin clumps can be found in woodland mansion chests, usually 2 to 4.
  • Resin is automatically produced on pale oak logs when you hit the Knarz.

As you can see, resin is not easy to obtain in bulk without an automatic farm. Depending on the biome’s size, there’s only a limited number of Knarz Hearts to be found in trees. This is especially problematic in Peaceful mode, where you can’t spawn the Knarz. To produce resin, you’ll have to face the Knarz.

Resin uses and resin brick crafting in Minecraft

So why bother with resin? As mentioned, it’s a great block for building. Its rich, striking orange colouring stands out in just about any build.

And the item is surprisingly versatile:

  • Craft a resin block from 9 clumps.
  • Use the resin block to craft Knarz Hearts (more on that later).
  • Smelt resin in a furnace to obtain resin bricks.
  • Resin bricks can be crafted into resin brick blocks, and those into slabs, stairs and walls. You can also use the stonecutter.
  • Get a chiselled resin brick with the Knarz’s face by combining two slabs.
  • Use the individual bricks to apply armour trims, adding orange accents to your gear.

Automatic resin farm in Minecraft: materials, Redstone and build guide

Resin and its many applications are very handy for players who enjoy building with bold colours and want an orange block. A farm is therefore definitely worthwhile. As explained above, resin only becomes renewable via the Knarz, which means interacting with a hostile mob. The good news is you can summon it yourself and put it to work.

There are several ways to build a resin farm in Minecraft, but the core mechanic remains the same. You need to summon a Knarz with a Knarz Heart and hit it so it produces resin. With pistons you can then move logs to shake off the resin, which you then collect. Our design is expandable, making it very practical for scaling up your farm.

Materials:

  • Chest and hopper
  • several stacks of building blocks
  • 64 slabs
  • 16 fences
  • 2 observers
  • 1 sticky piston
  • 1 Redstone repeater
  • 2 Redstone dust
  • 4 buttons
  • 4 water buckets
  • 2 pale logs
  • 1 Knarz Heart

Step 1: Collection basin for resin and item transport

Collection basin with water flow and hopper for resin farm

To collect the resin, start by building a collection basin. We recommend building the farm in the air to better control the Knarz’s spawning behaviour. 30 blocks above ground should be enough.

Place the chest with a hopper above, where the resin will land later. At the hopper’s height, build out five blocks in every direction, then raise the outer blocks by one block. Fill the corners with water so all items flow towards the centre.

Step 2: Summon the Knarz with a Knarz Heart and start resin production

Leave two blocks of air above the hopper, then place the Knarz Heart between two pale logs. These are the conditions under which the Knarz can spawn at night. The farm will therefore only work at night. Keep that in mind.

Tip: Build the farm during the day or in Peaceful mode so the Knarz doesn’t attack you straight away.

The Redstone is fairly straightforward. Place the piston behind the lower log, and the two observers to the left and right to detect resin forming. To drive the piston, place two full blocks behind the observers and the Redstone repeater behind the piston. Put Redstone dust behind the full blocks, and place another full block between them and the repeater. This gives the log a short nudge, shakes off the resin and washes it into the basin.

Step 3: Knarz safety, spawn platform and anti-spawn measures

Spawn platform safety with slabs and fences in resin farm

To ensure the Knarz spawns correctly and you can collect the resin, make a few final preparations:

  • Place the four buttons on the upper log so resin only forms on the lower side, where the observers can see it.
  • Line the outer wall of the water basin with slabs to prevent the Knarz from spawning there.
  • Build a small platform with fences on one side, where the Knarz will appear.

Once it’s night, the Knarz should spawn on the platform (except in Peaceful mode). As long as you look at it, it won’t attack or move. Punch it every five seconds with your bare hand, which produces resin. The observers and the piston will operate automatically and strip the resin. You can’t kill the Knarz. It disappears at daylight or when you break its Knarz Heart.

Expandable automatic resin farm in Minecraft at night

That’s the automatic farm complete. You can expand it by repeating the framework from step 2 and adjusting the water basin accordingly. The more Knarz you run, the harder it can be to keep them all in view. Also remember it only spawns at night.

Conclusion: farm resin and use resin bricks in your builds

Resin is an underrated building block that isn’t all that easy to find. You’ll need to visit one of the new biomes and deal with the fearsome Knarz. However, an automatic farm is not as complicated as you might think. Resin forms when you hit the Knarz. Let a piston automatically knock the resin off, and you can farm it fairly easily.

Rent one of our Minecraft servers and start your automatic resin farm right away. You’ll be able to use unique blocks in your builds and give them a rich orange accent.
