Wood is one of the most important resources in Minecraft, and there’s plenty of it in every world. Not only are there many different forests, but you can also grow trees by planting saplings, making wood renewable. However, chopping down trees yourself each time isn’t necessarily fun. Today, we want to look at various tree farms that will significantly simplify the process of gathering wood. Some of these farms are easy to implement, while others require a bit more effort.
Types of Wood in Minecraft
While Minecraft initially started with one type of wood, there are now ten different logs and planks you can find and craft. This makes Minecraft’s world very diverse, but it also gives you many options to expand your tree farm and collect all ten types of wood.
Overworld:
- Oak
- Birch
- Spruce (+ large variant)
- Jungle (+ large variant)
- Acacia
- Dark Oak
- Azalea (Oak)
- Mangrove
- Cherry
Nether:
- Warped Fungus
- Crimson Fungus
All trees consist of two components: the trunk and the leaves. While the trunk is an essential resource for crafting and building, the leaves disappear, leaving behind saplings and sticks, sometimes even apples (Oak) or vines (Jungle). Both are important and should be considered when building a tree farm.
Basics of Tree Farms
To grow and harvest a tree, you first need a sapling. While most trees require only one sapling, large spruces, large jungle trees, and dark oak trees require four saplings. Trees grow naturally with enough light or can be grown using bone meal. They must be planted on dirt or a variation of dirt.
Each tree has different variations in which it can grow. A single oak sapling can grow into either a small or large oak tree. You should chop the wood with an axe, while you can collect the leaves with shears or a hoe with Silk Touch.
Simple Tree Farm for Every World
You should build this simple tree farm in every one of your worlds because it is not only simple but also very practical. The trees grow on their own with this design, but you can also use bone meal. Another advantage of this farm is that the trees have enough space for their leaves, so you get enough saplings and other items.
Instructions:
What you need is a larger and flat area to plant your trees. You can extend the farm as you wish. It is best suited for single saplings but less so for 2x2 saplings.
Each sapling should be four blocks away from another sapling. You can mark the respective spots or build your tree farm from another material. There are no limits here as long as the saplings grow on dirt or a variation of dirt.
Place a light source between the saplings so they can grow naturally. Bone meal is not necessary if you have little of it or do not need much wood.
If you want to plant oak trees but do not want them to grow too large, cover the farm with a roof or at least solid blocks. Maintain a height of seven blocks, with the eighth block serving as a stopper to prevent giant oaks.
Efficient Tree Farm for More Wood
If you can do without the leaves but want to focus primarily on one type of wood, a compact farm is the most worthwhile. However, you will need enough bone meal because trees will not grow naturally if the saplings are planted directly next to each other.
You can obtain bone meal in various ways. You can either build a mob farm or search for a skeleton spawner. We have already provided instructions for this (How to Build an Automatic Monster Trap: Endless Resources) . You can also search for a soul sand valley in the Nether, where ancient skeletons made of full bone blocks exist. Each of these contains nine bone meals. Check out our article on a Nether hub (How to Build a Nether Hub: Travel Faster in the Minecraft World) for more information.
Instructions:
This tree farm works similarly to the one above but can be built even more compactly. Simply line up your desired saplings in a row and use bone meal to make them grow. This also works with large trees.
Then you just need to chop down the wood and repeat the process.
Spruce Farm with Water Collection Basin
The trees that give you the most wood by far are large spruces. Although there are also large jungle trees, they drop four times fewer saplings, making breeding significantly more difficult. This farm also uses a collection basin to gather excess saplings and logs. This makes the farm much easier to use. Bone meal is also necessary here, so keep enough on hand!
Instructions:
Measure an area of 16x16 blocks so that the water and flow can catch the excess saplings and logs. One row of water sources should be enough to flow over eight blocks, fitting two levels into the field. At the end, one row remains. There, place a water channel leading to a hopper and a chest. We discussed a similar design in our wheat farm (How to Build an Automatic Wheat Farm) .
Build a small 2x2 platform a few blocks above the water so that the water flow is not interrupted. There you can grow your large spruce trees. You can harvest them by building a kind of spiral upwards.
Regularly check the chest to collect new saplings or logs. You can, of course, use this for other trees, but spruces give you the most wood by far.
Conclusion
You can’t avoid wood in Minecraft! It is everywhere and is needed for many recipes. Additionally, it is one of the most important resources for building. Therefore, setting up a tree farm is worthwhile to gather enough wood of your choice. Depending on whether you have enough bone meal or not, you can set up your farm. Never run out of wood again! Build a tree farm on your own server and supply yourself and your friends. Rent your Minecraft server and let the trees grow! Working together is much more fun, and you can collect wood for building projects even faster.
