Experience points are a crucial system in Minecraft, as they allow you to enchant your weapons, tools, and armour later at an enchantment table. You can collect the small, green points through various activities, such as killing monsters, mining specific blocks, breeding animals, trading, or using a furnace. There are many ways to increase your level in the regular game. But what if you want to specifically reach level 30 and currently have nothing else to do? We provide you with some cool designs for XP farms that you can seamlessly integrate into your world.
1. Simple Monster Trap
We have previously discussed building a classic monster trap in another article (How to Build an Automatic Monster Trap: Endless Resources) , so we won’t explain it in detail again. Read the relevant article if you need assistance. This monster trap is a great way to obtain experience points in addition to resources. Due to the fall damage, you only need to hit the monsters once, and they will die. This makes the trap so efficient, and at the same time, you get drops from zombies, skeletons, creepers, and witches.
You can easily expand our suggested design by adding one or two more levels. Otherwise, the design is quite simple, and you can build it over the ocean of your choice to spawn the most mobs. We recommend this monster trap for beginners!
2. Spawner Trap
While exploring your Minecraft world, you’ve probably come across a strange room made of cobblestone and mossy cobblestone. These are dungeons that have been in Minecraft for a long time. They guarantee that certain monsters will spawn, and you can take advantage of this!
Monster spawners exist for:
- Zombies
- Spiders
- Skeletons
- Cave Spiders
- Silverfish (Stronghold)
- Blaze (Nether)
- Magma Cubes (Nether)
For an XP farm, one of the first three farms is ideal, but since spiders can be a bit annoying, a zombie or skeleton spawner is most suitable. The monsters spawn in a certain area and can be directed into a collection basin for killing, similar to the first monster trap. If you’re lucky, you might even find multiple spawners nearby that you can use together. However, you need to stay within a certain radius to keep the spawner active. You can tell by the flames the spawner displays.
Instructions for Spawner XP Farm
First, you need to find a suitable spawner. Either you have already found one, or you can use a tool called Chunkbase and enter your seed there. It will show you the coordinates and the respective type.
Light up the room and place a slab on the spawner so that nothing spawns and you can build in peace. Dig out a certain area around the spawner, ideally 4 blocks in each direction and 3 blocks upwards. There should be enough space in the end for the monsters to spawn.
On one side, build a trench and fill it with water. This is where the monsters will be collected later. To move the monsters within the room, place water on the opposite side.
Finally, you need to create a small collection station for the monsters. Some farms also use a waterfall to cause fall damage, but this is not necessary for an XP farm. The collection basin works similarly to the regular monster trap, using hoppers and a chest. Carefully remove all the torches and wait for the monsters to gather.
3. Smelting Farm with Cacti
As mentioned in the introduction, you can also earn experience points by smelting items. This is particularly useful if you’re playing in Peaceful mode and don’t want to defeat monsters. This design works in any world, making it incredibly practical for gaining XP in between.
The design is based on an automatic cactus farm, which you can then process into green dye in the furnace. If you want to automatically add fuel, you can also build a seagrass farm or bamboo farm. However, we will primarily focus on the smelting farm with cacti. You can use lava, coal, or blaze rods as fuel for the furnace, whichever you prefer.
Instructions for Cactus XP Farm
Use an area of 9x9 to build your cactus farm. The system works similarly to the above farms, but with cacti instead of monsters. Build a water trench on one side and let the water flow to the opposite side. At the end, you can place a hopper to collect the cactus.
Now, build the cactus farm. Create an alternating pattern with building blocks so that the cacti have a free space next to them. Place sand and then the cactus on top. With this design, you can accommodate 24 cacti.
To automatically break the cactus, place a block above in the gaps with a fence. You can extend the design infinitely. Every time the cactus tries to grow, the top block will be broken by the fence and fall into the water trench.
- Smelt the cactus in the furnace with a fuel of your choice. The good thing is that the experience is stored in the furnace, even if the items pass through. To get the XP, attach a lever to the furnace to stop the automatic extraction of the green dye and manually remove it. You will simultaneously receive your experience. You can either use the green dye or discard it.
Conclusion
With enough experience, you can enchant all your tools and armour as you wish! However, constantly searching for experience can be tedious. The right XP farm makes the job much easier. Either focus on one of the monster traps or build an automatic system with cacti and hoppers. Both work perfectly! Level up faster and dominate the game with an XP farm on your own server. Rent your Minecraft server and reach new heights in no time! There are also some better XP farms, but they are intended for professionals. These include, for example, an Enderman farm or a Pigman farm. We might take a closer look at these at a later date!
