Hytale already offers a wide range of weapons to defend yourself against the creatures of Orbis. Some are naturally better than others, so today we’re ranking all currently available weapons. From simple swords to magic staves, you can already enjoy varied combat. But what’s actually worth investing your resources in? We’re focusing on weapon categories rather than materials, even though those matter too. The better the upgrades, the more effective the weapon, of course! And we’re only looking at weapons that are currently available in the Exploration Mode.
Top Hytale Weapons in Exploration Mode: Our Best Picks

1. Dagger in Hytale: Fastest Starter Weapon
Daggers are the community’s undisputed number one and have won over many players right from the start. They’re fast, easy to handle, and therefore a great starter weapon. Their biggest strength is likely the jump attack, which may not deal massive damage but lets you bounce off enemies to avoid counterattacks. A downside of daggers is that you rely on rapid hits that individually deal less damage. Your defense is also weak. With good tactics, though, you can absolutely make up for it.
2. Sword and Shield in Hytale: Balanced All-rounder
The classic sword and shield combo shouldn’t be underestimated in Hytale. It strikes a great balance between damage and speed, making it arguably the best choice for most players. Swords also currently offer the most variety. You can craft them and also loot them from enemies. With a shield in your off-hand, you can additionally block a lot of damage.
3. Bow in Hytale: Precise Ranged Combat
You should also be prepared for ranged combat, and the classic bow is your best pick here. It lets you shoot enemies from a distance to gain an advantage. Just make sure you always have enough arrows in your inventory. You can craft them yourself or pick them up from other archers. The bow is a precise ranged weapon for your arsenal and should always be part of your loadout!
Good Hytale Weapons: Strong PvE Alternatives

4. Crossbow in Hytale: Burst Fire with a Magazine
If you don’t want to use a bow, we recommend the crossbow as an alternative. You can craft one and also find a stronger model as loot in chests. The difference: you can load 6 arrows into a crossbow and fire them rapidly in succession! That gives you more leeway in clutch situations, since a bow needs to be redrawn each shot. The crossbow can even outperform the bow at times, but we ranked it slightly lower due to the limited selection of models.
5. Battle Axe in Hytale: High Damage per Hit
Hytale also offers slower, and therefore stronger, weapons. Of those, we recommend the battle axe. It’s still reasonably quick, but hits much harder per swing than, say, a sword. You can’t use a shield with it, but you can block with the axe itself. It also has a chargeable forward leap, a genuinely strong combat move! There are also plenty of variants, from upgrades to monster loot.
6. Flame Crystal Staff in Hytale: Versatile Fire Staff
The Flame Crystal Staff is one of two staves you can craft at the Arcanist’s Workbench. And you should, because it enables flexible gameplay and lots of variety! Just be sure to carry enough Essence of Fire as ammo. Left-click fires fireballs, while right-click unleashes a continuous stream of fire! With the special attack, you can set an area ablaze.
Weaker Hytale Weapons: These Options Are Seldom Worth It

7. Bombs in Hytale: Situational Ranged Option
Bombs are another ranged weapon in Hytale, and there are two types. You can get bombs as drops from goblins, and you can also craft Popcherry Bombs at the Alchemist’s Workbench. Regular bombs explode after just a few seconds, which makes them rather impractical—sometimes they even go off midair and miss their target. By contrast, craftable Popcherry Bombs explode on impact, which is far better in combat. They only deal around 15 HP of damage, but can still be useful.
8. Hammers in Hytale: Very Slow and Inflexible
To us, hammers are the worst weapons you can craft at the workbench. They’re even slower than battle axes and therefore quite inflexible. Sure, they deal a lot of damage per hit, but that doesn’t make up for how sluggish they are. You can block with them as well, but that animation is also relatively slow. We don’t really recommend hammers.
9. Ice Crystal Staff in Hytale: Stamina Drain with Charge Time
The second staff is the Ice Crystal Staff, which we find weaker than the Flame Crystal Staff in every respect. You again need ammo, this time Essence of Ice. The problem is that its attacks must be charged, which makes it slower. You can right-click to fire faster, but that consumes a lot of stamina. That stamina drain is the biggest drawback that makes the Ice Crystal Staff weaker.
10. Spears in Hytale: Mid-range but Limited
Spears could easily rank higher because they’re inherently a good mid-range weapon. But they have two downsides: they only stack up to 5 and you can’t craft them. Your best sources are fish traps and the Fishbone Harpoon; otherwise they drop from Kweebecs and Trorks. As it stands, they’re not particularly useful—bows are a much better ranged option!
Conclusion: The Best Hytale Weapons for Your Playstyle
The weapon selection is perfect for trying out different playstyles—and Hytale offers plenty! As a rule of thumb, we recommend a combo of sword, daggers, and bow, but don’t underestimate the other options. Ultimately, it comes down to your preferences. And we expect more possibilities to arrive with future updates. In Creative Mode, you can already discover more weapons, including longswords and even firearms! Who knows when—or if—these will be added to regular gameplay.
