Your Pals’ labor is a key component in Palworld, as they can automate many tasks. Each Pal has its own strengths: some excel at working with plants, others prefer hauling items. But these preset work skills aren’t fixed—they’re flexible. One way to enhance your Pals’ abilities is the Pal Work Institute. It’s easy to overlook in the technology tab, but it’s arguably one of the most important things you can build! We’ll show you which upgrades you can unlock and which Pals to use.
Palworld Pal Work Institute: Unlocking the technology and how to use it

Like many other structures, you unlock the Pal Work Institute via Technologies. You need to reach Level 20 and have 2 points available. Then you can build the station with 10x Metal Ingots and 10x Paldium Fragments. After that, open the menu and you’ll be greeted by a skill tree.
Each work skill has its own branch you can progress, ranging from Handiwork to Medicine Production. You can tackle each skill individually based on what you want to research right now. Pick a work type and review its ability tree. You’ll immediately see several details showing how research will progress.

Requirements for researching a skill:
- A Pal with the corresponding work skill at the level (or higher) shown on the left edge. The further you go, the higher the required level.
- Every research requires specific materials to begin, often tied to the job. For Kindling, for example, you’ll need Flame Organs.
Each node also shows which perks are unlocked and how long the research takes (workload). If you have a suitable Pal and all materials, you can start the research and work your way forward.
Palworld: Farming Old Pal Parchments for research
A common bottleneck is Old Pal Parchments, which you need for virtually every research as a material. They’re essential, and you won’t get far without them. We recommend expeditions as your primary source. Conveniently, we already have a guide if you want to know which trips are most profitable (Palworld Expeditions: Best Pals, Rewards, and Tips) . Generally, you’ll earn them on every expedition. An alternative is fishing, if you have the time and patience.
Pal Work Institute upgrades in Palworld: All skill trees and perks

For each of the nine work skills, you can unlock between 13 and 20 different nodes. They’re tailored to the respective job and grant a perk with every successful research. These stack and boost a wide range of activities in Palworld.
All skill trees share some perks you can unlock, including the ability to speed up research by up to +20%. That’s the branch we recommend tackling first, as it saves time across the other branches. It’s always the right-hand path, and at the end you unlock a +2% boost to the attack and defense of Pals in your base. Altogether, you can make them +18% stronger when Pals or raids attack your base.
You can also speed up each job by up to +35%, another extremely strong perk! In every skill you can additionally unlock a machine or other tool via Technologies. They’re not always must-haves, but you’ll unlock them naturally as you progress.

Best Pals for the Pal Work Institute: Speeding up research efficiently

As with all other stations in your base, suitable Pals will automatically work at the Pal Work Institute. However, it has the lowest priority among stations. If other tasks are pending, a Pal will focus on those first. We therefore recommend assigning dedicated Pals to the institute and using the Overseer Tower to assign them directly to this station.
Early on, you’ll naturally be limited to the Pals you have. However, we suggest using Pals with the most diverse skill sets so you don’t have to hunt for new Pals for every research. While these all-rounders often have lower levels, they still provide a noticeable boost to your early research. Use our guide to the best all-rounders so you can deploy them for research as well (Palworld All‑Rounder Pals: The Best Helpers for Your Base) .
Conclusion: Get the most out of the Pal Work Institute in Palworld
The Pal Work Institute is a base station that’s far too often underestimated. Here you can not only make your Pals work faster, but also unlock other powerful perks. These are tied to work skills and provide broad boosts to nearly every aspect of Palworld. Whether faster crafting, bigger harvests, or new tech devices, you should regularly kick off research to get the most out of your base.
