The first Minecraft Live 2026 livestream has wrapped, bringing a host of exciting announcements for the game. With Tiny Takeover about to drop and Chaos Cubed confirmed as the second small update of the year, we’re taking a closer look at both—and what you can look forward to in Minecraft this spring and summer. Expect adorable baby mobs, long‑awaited crafting recipes, and a brand‑new cave biome.
Minecraft version numbers 2026: New numbering system for Drops 26.1 and 26.2
If you’ve been playing snapshots recently or already have the new Drop available, you’ve likely noticed the new numbering for Minecraft versions. It’s designed to reduce confusion. All new Drops are now tied to their year and quarter. Previously, major updates were numbered sequentially from release 1.0 up to update 1.21. That changes from 2026 onwards.
The new format starts with the current year, in this case 26. It’s followed by the number of the current Drop. Tiny Takeover is 26.1, while Chaos Cubed is 26.2. Small patches or bug fixes get an extra digit, for example 26.1.1. So if you’re updating to the new version or upgrading your server, don’t be thrown off by the new format.
Minecraft Tiny Takeover 26.1: March update with baby mobs and the golden dandelion
Snapshots for the first Drop of 2026: Tiny Takeover have been running since the start of the year. The focus is on baby animals, which until now were essentially just mini versions of their parents. That changes now: all creatures in Minecraft are getting an overhaul. There are also two intriguing recipes to help you bond more closely with your animals. The Drop releases on 24 March 2026.
Minecraft baby mobs: New models, textures and sounds

Baby animals have been around since release 1.0 and the introduction of breeding, but for 15 years they’ve essentially been shrunken adults. Babies now get their own models and textures, bringing fresh life to your farm.
Literally every mob that can have offspring has been refreshed—from cows, sheep and pigs to zombies, turtles and even squid. They’re now cuter and have their own sounds. Some even display personality, including regal cats or moody cows with distinct vocalisations. It’s genuinely fun to spend time with all the little ones.
The rabbits have been completely reworked, with new models even for the adults. They’re fluffier and chonkier, with new animations. It’s worth keeping an eye out for the different rabbit variants.
Golden dandelion in Minecraft: Keep animals young permanently

You can also keep your favourites small forever. With the new golden dandelion, baby animals stay small and won’t grow up. That’s perfect if you love a particular texture or look. Take a regular dandelion and surround it with eight gold nuggets to craft a golden dandelion. Feed it to a baby and it won’t grow. You can reverse this by feeding the animal another golden dandelion. Particle effects show you which state the animal is in.
Crafting Name Tags in Minecraft: New recipe and adjustments

Another big change echoes the previous Drop, where you could finally craft Saddles. Now it’s Name Tags’ turn, with their own recipe. A nugget of iron, copper or gold and paper placed diagonally are enough to craft a Name Tag. Perfect for your new companions, to whom you can now give unlimited nicknames.
As a result, Name Tags have been removed from several loot pools. Librarians no longer sell them, and they no longer appear in Woodland Mansions or Ancient Cities. Instead, they can now be found with the Wandering Trader.
Minecraft Chaos Cubed 26.2: Summer Drop with sulphur caves, cinnabar, and Sulphur Cubes
The Minecraft Live livestream also revealed the next Drop, bringing new gameplay mechanics and a new biome. Underground, you’ll be able to find sulphur caves, with unique red and yellow blocks to mine. You’ll also encounter a new mob, the Sulphur Cube. Snapshots for the second Drop of 2026 are expected to start in April, with the update arriving in June or July.
Sulphur caves in Minecraft: Cinnabar and sulphur blocks as new building materials

Alongside lush caves and dripstone caves, another underground biome is joining the roster. Sulphur caves are made up of yellow sulphur blocks and red cinnabar blocks, making them easy to recognise. There are also pools emitting strange odours. Thanks to potent sulphur, bubbles rise to the surface, creating a striking visual effect. Don’t bathe in them, or you’ll feel ill.
The new building blocks are particularly exciting. With yellow sulphur and red cinnabar, two new block palettes are coming to the game. Already shown are polished and chiselled variants, plus bricks, walls, stairs and slabs for both stone types. That opens up lots of decorative building options.
Sulphur Cube mob: Inherits block properties for creative sandbox gameplay

For sandbox players, Sulphur Cubes are especially interesting. They’re based on green slimes and Nether magma cubes, but won’t attack you. You’ll find them in sulphur caves.
Sulphur Cubes have a unique ability. They absorb a block and inherit its properties. The full extent of this isn’t yet known, but we’ve already seen the following. Ice makes them slipperier, metal blocks make them heavier, and wool makes them lighter. This feature promises wonderfully creative sandbox gameplay.
Conclusion on the Minecraft 2026 updates: Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed at a glance
With Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed, two of the year’s usual four Drops are now known. They bring both revamps of classic features and new locations and mobs. Expect completely new baby models with sounds, craftable Name Tags, and the golden dandelion. Coming soon are the sulphur caves with fresh building blocks, plus the unique Sulphur Cubes.
