Most players will probably start out in Minecraft’s Survival mode. But there’s also Creative mode, which gives you endless possibilities and options to let your imagination run wild. On top of that come unique functions, not-yet-released or hidden features, and plenty of small tricks you might not have known! It’s absolutely worth using Creative mode even as a hardcore Survival player, because here you can test all your ideas without any grind. To finish, we’ll also share a few mods that make the mode more comfortable and, above all, better for creative players.

Minecraft Creative mode: features, advantages and tips

Minecraft Creative mode features and tips

You can select Minecraft’s Creative mode when you create a new world. If you enable commands, you can also switch an existing world to Creative easily by pressing F3+F4 and cycling through the available modes. The other modes are Adventure and Spectator.

Minecraft’s Creative mode includes the following features:

  • You can fly by double‑tapping the space bar. This lets you reach previously inaccessible places and move around your creative world more quickly.
  • You can break any block with a single hit, even without tools.
  • The middle mouse button is your best friend in Creative. Press it and the block you are looking at will automatically appear in your selected hotbar slot. In Survival this only works with blocks you already have in your inventory.
  • Your block-breaking reach is longer — a little over 5 blocks.
  • There is no hunger.
  • Mobs will not attack you, though you can still play with a difficulty set.
  • Commands are enabled from the start and help you trigger specific things quickly.
Minecraft Creative mode inventory and saving hotbars

The inventory works differently in Creative, as you have access to every block. That makes it possible to build amazing things without first hunting down the right materials. There are also several extra functions that aren’t obvious at first glance.

  • Save your hotbars so you can switch faster when you regularly use certain block palettes.
  • Search for items to find them more quickly.
  • Delete unwanted items from your inventory.
  • Use spawn eggs to summon the mobs you want.

Minecraft Creative mode secrets and hidden features

Minecraft Creative mode secrets and hidden features

Thanks to its open nature, Creative mode includes lots of little secrets you wouldn’t encounter in normal gameplay. They’re programmed into the game, but you normally don’t have access to them.

For example, there are three mobs you can summon: the giant zombie, the not-yet-implemented Illusioner, and the Killer Bunny. You can bring these into the game using commands, and apart from the Giant, the other two even have functional AI. The Creative‑exclusive zombie horse was only recently added to the official game, so who knows when the other mobs might follow.

Unlike in the Bedrock Edition, armour stands in Java Edition’s Survival aren’t very dynamic — but you can unlock that functionality in Creative. This allows the stand to take different poses, which otherwise wouldn’t be possible.

Minecraft Creative mode commands: the most important inputs

Minecraft Creative mode commands and chat inputs

In Creative you should definitely make use of commands to make many things easier. Open the chat by pressing T. A bar appears at the bottom where you can type commands. All commands start with a /. After that, type the command. As soon as you enter the slash you’ll see a list of available commands. Often it’s enough to type the first letter and then cycle options with Tab. Move between arguments with the space bar and confirm with Enter.

We can’t list them all, so here are the most useful:

  • /clear → Clears your entire inventory.
  • /time set day → Sets the time to day.
  • /fill → Fill, remove or replace blocks within defined coordinates. Coordinates can auto‑fill based on the block you are looking at.
  • /gamemode → Switch between the four game modes.
  • /gamerule → A range of settings to tailor your gameplay.
  • /kill → Kill entities around you or yourself.
  • /locate → Find specific biomes or structures in your world.
  • /enchant → Enchant the item in your hand.
  • /summon → Summon various mobs or blocks.
  • /weather → Change the weather.

Commands can be a bit confusing at first, but it’s worth learning them so you can realise your creative ideas faster. There are also more complex command blocks that can store and trigger longer inputs. This is especially important for advanced maps.

Minecraft Creative mode mods: the best tools for builders

Minecraft Creative mode mods for builders

If you want to build in Creative, mods are practically essential. You can achieve a lot with commands, but some mods make life much easier. We’ve already covered mods in a recent article (Minecraft Mods: 10 Fabric Recommendations for Performance, Graphics & QoL) , but these are perfect for creative ideas!

  • Axiom: Probably the best mod for Creative. Lets you copy, delete and extend with the mouse. It also includes a Blender‑like mode for terrain sculpting.
  • WorldEdit: A map editor that has been a cornerstone of the creative modding scene for many years.
  • Just Enough Items: Shows you all items, plus recipes and other options. Perfect if you have mods with additional items and blocks installed and want a better overview.
  • Litematica: Enables detailed block work, can count and replace blocks, and lets you save schematics.
  • Tweakeroo: Brings many small quality‑of‑life tweaks, especially for the hotbar and item selection.

Conclusion on Minecraft’s Creative mode: ideas, commands and mods

Creative mode in Minecraft is ideal for testing all your ideas without major consequences. You can also use it if you don’t want to gather every material for a build and would rather focus on construction. Some mods help make things easier, but you should also familiarise yourself with Vanilla Minecraft’s commands to unlock some very handy functions.

You can of course use a multiplayer server in Creative mode too — have a look at our page and rent your own Minecraft server: https://www.4netplayers.com/en-gb/gameserver-hosting/minecraft/. A Creative‑mode world can be a great change of pace from Survival gameplay!
