There are certainly plenty of trees in Minecraft, and thanks to many new updates, you also have access to various types of wood. However, for people who love building and being creative, the normal trees may quickly become boring. That’s why you should consider building your own trees, which can give a world an extremely impressive and personal character. You can not only determine the growth direction yourself but also the size, colour, and design of your trees. Depending on the project, different types can be implemented. We’ll show you exactly how it works!
Variety of Trees in Vanilla Minecraft

Minecraft itself offers a range of trees that you can find throughout the world. Thanks to saplings, you can also cultivate them yourself and beautify your world (and, of course, gather wood). There’s already a lot you can do with them, and most trees have different variations. These sometimes attempt to imitate real tree species, albeit somewhat primitively.
Trees from the Overworld
- Oak: Can be small or large. They also occur in swamps.
- Dark Oak: Consists of a thick trunk and dense foliage.
- Spruce: Can be either wide (like a fir) or tall and without leaves.
- Birch: Here, only the length of the trunk changes.
- Jungle: Can grow as a single tree or with a trunk made of four blocks.
- Acacia: Have a flat and wide canopy.
- Azalea: A variation of the oak, with colourful petals.
- Mangrove: Has dense foliage and deep roots.
- Cherry: Large trees with pink and bushy foliage.
- Blonde Oak: Similar to dark oak, just lighter.
Trees in Other Dimensions
- Giant Nether Mushrooms: Not necessarily trees, but similar. They can be found with both warped fungi and crimson fungi in the Nether. They take on a tree-like form.
- Chorus Plant: The trees of the Nether, even though they don’t look like it.
Potential of Custom-Designed Minecraft Trees
Of course, with over ten different types, you can do quite a bit, but unfortunately, there aren’t so many variations of the vanilla trees. This can lead to your world not looking diverse or varied enough. Many grow in predetermined patterns that you can only influence to a limited extent.
To set your world apart from others and give it your own character, custom-created trees are one of the best options! They immediately draw attention, and you have control over how they should look. Additionally, you can customise each tree individually and integrate it perfectly into your world.
Basic Principles of Custom-Designed Trees
Before we give you a detailed guide, let’s first look at the basic elements that are part of every tree. These determine how the tree looks in the end and provide you with a good guideline. You can apply these to all the following trees; our tutorial is meant to serve as a blueprint. We want to focus on a universal guide and not just give you a template. After all, you should be able to build yourself and apply these basics accordingly. They can be applied to almost any tree!
Purpose and Intent: As with any project, you need to consider what you actually want to build. This also applies to custom-created trees. Where should this tree stand? In a castle garden or on a mountain? Should the tree even serve as a dwelling itself? This alone determines many aspects of the later tree, such as its size and structure. You can, of course, always customise this parameter individually.
Type of Tree: The first point directly influences this second aspect, namely the tree itself. You can take inspiration from real trees, with plenty of images available online as templates. We recommend using photos when you’re unsure. The location is also crucial, as not all trees grow everywhere climatically. But self-invented trees with a fantasy look are also possible, depending on how you want your world to look in the end.
More Than Just a Tree: An important aspect is looking beyond Minecraft’s natural tree blocks. Don’t just use the rudimentary tree trunks, but also other blocks that match in colour. Additionally, you can give branches much more depth with things like fences or walls, but more on that in the proper tutorial. In the end, no one will mind as long as the tree looks beautiful!
Step-by-Step Guide to Building Custom Trees
With the following guide, hopefully, every custom-created tree will be a success for you! We decided to build a larger oak tree next to our starter house (Building Ideas for Your First House: Step-by-Step Guide) , to better integrate it into nature. But you can use and follow these steps for your own ideas.
- Location: As explained in the basic principles, you need to choose a suitable location where the tree should go. It helps to already know the dimensions of the tree and perhaps even mark them out. Those with good imagination have an advantage here.

- Block Palette: Choose a colour palette from which you want to build the trunk. Use one of the natural tree trunks as a template or another colour that better matches your chosen type. We stuck with oak but incorporated other brown blocks.

- Build the Trunk: Start by constructing the tree trunk and branches. Pay attention to a natural form, where templates can help. Initially, limit yourself to one block before adding details later.

- Add Foliage: Then you can attach the leaves. There is plenty of choice in Minecraft here, but you can also integrate other green blocks. Pay attention to a natural distribution of leaves, where they would grow in reality. They primarily grow at the ends of branches and twigs and less directly on the trunk. This is a feature that will set your trees apart from Minecraft trees.

- Detail Work: Once the basics are there, you can continue with the detailing. This means adjusting the texture of the trunk, adding roots, and expanding and better designing the leaves. This step can take a lot of time but is very enjoyable and gives your tree the final touch!
Conclusion
If you’re serious about your builds, you should also attempt to create your own trees. Minecraft’s vanilla trees are cool, but they don’t offer the variations and diversity that you, as a player, can create. Rent your own Minecraft server with us and build a stylish forest with custom-designed trees together with your friends! It looks much nicer than just using saplings and bone meal.
