In Hytale, you’ll work with a range of workbenches to craft items. That can be confusing at first, as you need an overview of which items are made where. Once you’ve set up every bench, you’ll be well prepared for your Hytale adventure. The workbenches may change over the course of Early Access, but here’s what’s currently possible and what makes each bench unique.
Hytale Workbenches: Getting Started and Crafting Tips

First, craft a workbench in your inventory, as from there you can select the other workbenches via a separate tab. The workbench itself covers all tools, such as pickaxes and axes. There’s also a final section for general items and, very importantly, your backpack upgrade.
Each workbench also shares these traits:
- Items can be pulled from nearby chests, which streamlines crafting. The radius was increased with Update 1, so chests a bit further away will now be used too. At present there can still be issues with chest prioritisation.
- Most workbenches follow a tier system that you can upgrade to unlock more recipes. However, not all tiers are available yet.
- Use the Recycler to break old tools down into their components.
In the next section we’ll go through every station in detail and group them into their sections. Most workbenches come in pairs. This helps you stay oriented and use them separately, as they tend to require similar items.
Smelt Ores and Tan Leather: Furnace and Tanning Rack

These two stations require manual operation, but they convert gathered items into other useful materials. The furnace turns ores into ingots, and the tanning rack dries hides into leather. It can be worth having two or three of each to process more in parallel.
- Furnace: Smelt your ores, from copper to adamantite. For fuel, you can use anything you find in the wild, such as fibres, sticks or logs. This also yields charcoal, which you can then use as fuel. Hover over the empty slot to see which materials are valid. You can upgrade the furnace to smelt faster and in larger batches.
- Tanning Rack: Leather is an important resource obtained from animals. Use the rack to dry hides into leather. This bench also has an upgrade so leather dries faster. You’ll need to manually load new hides.
Craft Weapons and Armour: Weaponsmith and Armoursmith

Combat is a key part of Hytale, so you’ll want to be prepared. Equip yourself with the best weapons and armour before heading out. Use different weapon types to your advantage and find what suits you best.
- Weaponsmith: As the name suggests, this bench lets you craft new weapons from higher-tier ores. Weapons are organised into different tabs, so you can choose your own combat style and try out various options. You’ll find swords, axes, maces, daggers and bows. You can currently upgrade the Weaponsmith to Tier 3.
- Armoursmith: Suitable armour is essential for protection. Crafting works similarly to weapons and you’ll need lots of ingots and leather to make armour pieces. You can also craft shields here.
Cooking and Farming: Food, Saplings and Animal Supplies

In Hytale you can farm and turn your harvest into tasty dishes. Whilst farming is already fairly fleshed out, there’s not much to do with cooking yet. It’s still worth checking both benches.
- Farmer’s Workbench: This is currently the most complex station in your arsenal. Progress through crops up to Tier 10 to unlock new cultivation options. Here you can obtain tree saplings, cover your animal husbandry supplies, craft natural blocks and work with life essence. Farming is great fun and provides the ingredients you’ll need for cooking.
- Cooking Station: For now there’s not a lot you can cook, but you should still do it. Cooked items restore more health and regenerate you faster. You can also process some animal products like eggs and milk. Upgrades are not available yet.
Blocks and Decoration: Building, Furniture and Variants

When it comes to building, Hytale already offers a lot if you take a closer look at these two workbenches. You can convert almost any block into other variants to build fantastic houses. There are also furniture and decorations to make your home cosy.
- Artisan’s Workbench: Place a block in the slot to see which variants you can craft. From slabs and stairs to fences, roof tiles and decor, there’s plenty to explore.
- Furniture Workbench: This bench is already extensive and lets you craft various decorations. Make different chests, beds, light sources, wool and clay, plus seasonal decor. Future updates will almost certainly add even more options.
Magic and Potions: Alchemy and the Arcane

You can only craft these last two benches once you reach Tier 2 of the standard workbench. You’ll also need rarer items. This unlocks the magical side of Hytale, enabling some exciting possibilities.
- Alchemist’s Workbench: You’ve likely found potions in dungeons, and here you can brew them yourself. You can also brew potions that temporarily transform you into animals. Lastly, you can craft bombs here too.
- Arcanist’s Workbench: Use this to craft portals for teleportation. You can also open portals to other worlds that showcase the upcoming World Generation V2. Wands and other magical systems are still in development.
Conclusion: How to Push Your Progress in Hytale
Hytale relies on several workbenches that drive your progression. Use them to explore the game’s different facets. You can focus on combat or dive into farming. Hytale gives you plenty of freedom to tailor your gameplay. Keep an eye on upgrades to unlock new recipes.
