Unlike many survival games, you don’t need to eat in Hytale to satisfy hunger. The system works more like early Minecraft versions before full release. Food regenerates your health instead, which means you’ll need to stay on your toes during fights. Some foods provide only short bursts of regeneration, while others can heal you for several minutes. As with all things Hytale, that could still change! For now, let’s look at what’s on the menu and what you should focus on.

Hytale cooking: Campfire and Cooking Station explained

Hytale cooking at the campfire and the cooking station

In Hytale, you have several ways to process food. You can always eat ingredients raw, but that won’t get you very far. So build one of the two workbenches as soon as possible to process your ingredients further.

  • Campfire: 4x sticks + 2x gravel
  • Cooking Station: 2x copper ingots + 10x logs + 5x stone

At the beginning, you’ll make do with the basic campfire, which you can find in the crafting grid of your inventory. There you can roast certain items to give them a tasty aroma. You can cook meat, fish, and all kinds of vegetables here. It’s a solid solution for your first few hours, helping you stay alive.

Once you’ve built a workbench, you can craft a Cooking Station on it. This unlocks more recipes and ingredients that give you a stronger health boost and last for several minutes. You’ll find three tabs: one for cooking recipes, one for baking, and one for crafting ingredients. This is where you can really get to work and prepare delicious food to take on your travels!

Unlocking Hytale recipes: Rootling Merchant and Essence of Life

Hytale Rootling Merchant sells recipes for Essence of Life

You’ll notice that some slots are missing in the Cooking Station. You can unlock these with recipes, which a friendly merchant trades for Essences of Life. You’ll find the Rootling Merchant in some Kweebec villages in Zone 1, marked on the map by a large round cluster of trees. He’s also always present in the Forgotten Temple, right in front of the Statue of Memories.

The vendor rotates his stock regularly, and you’ll need plenty of Essence of Life to trade. He specialises in food, and you can buy standard dishes and ingredients from him. From time to time, he also offers recipes you should snap up! Each recipe has a 20% chance to appear.

There are four additional dishes to find:

  • Apple Pie (2x large Essence of Life)
  • Pumpkin Pie (2x large Essence of Life)
  • Caesar Salad (2x large Essence of Life)
  • Meat Pie (3x large Essence of Life)

Hytale ingredients: Farming, foraging, crafting, trading, and hunting

To cook, you’ll also need the right ingredients. Hytale already shows how surprisingly deep this is, offering multiple ways to feed yourself. The system will likely expand further, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.

You can obtain cooking ingredients by:

  • Farming crops: Tend fields and grow vegetables and other produce you can live on. Learn more in our guide (Hytale Farming Guide: Workbench, Irrigation and Essence of Life) .
  • Foraging in the wild: Find mushrooms and other ingredients throughout the world of Orbis!
  • Crafting ingredients: In the third tab of the Cooking Station, you can make certain ingredients yourself, such as spices or salt.
  • Buying ingredients and food: You can also purchase them from the Rootling in exchange for essences.
  • Killing animals: If you want to use meat as an ingredient, you’ll have to slaughter a few animals. Most recipes don’t yet distinguish between meat types, but there are raw chicken, pork, and fish.
  • Keeping animals: Alternatively, capture and keep animals for their resources. That includes eggs from chickens and milk from cows.
  • Placing fish traps: These provide not only fish but also salt blocks, which you can refine into salt.

Hytale recipe list: Skewers, salads, pies, and extras

Finally, here are all currently available recipes, along with which ones are most worthwhile. As mentioned, you can (almost) always eat ingredients raw for a small boost, but that’s only really worth it in a pinch. It’s better to pick one or more recipes you can make regularly. Note that dishes only stack up to 25.

  • Skewers: Skewers are made from sticks and one of four ingredients: mushrooms, meat, vegetables, or fruit. They’re hearty and perfect for a quick, efficient on-the-go snack. They grant 10% health on use plus Health Regen II and Health Boost II (for fruit, Stamina Boost II).

  • Salads: Salads made from mushrooms or wild berries are as good as skewers, but the Caesar Salad is even better—once you find the recipe. It regenerates and boosts your health and stamina to level 3 for a full 6 minutes.

  • Pies: Pies are currently the best recipes in the game, but you’ll need to buy the recipes and use many ingredients. Whether that’s worth it is debatable. If you enjoy cooking, though, pies are your absolute best choice!

  • Extras: To restore 15% of your health instantly, use one of these. Bake bread from dough, make tasty popcorn from corn and salt, or produce your own cheese from cow’s milk. You don’t get regeneration, but sometimes topping up your health in one go is more effective.

Conclusion: Heal with food and eat with variety in Hytale

Hytale already lets you cook all sorts of tasty dishes for various bonuses. Food heals you and can regenerate both health and stamina over several minutes. From simple vegetable skewers to pies or popcorn, there’s plenty of variety that ties into different game systems—making Hytale’s cooking both varied and complex. And there’s likely much more to come!
