Animals populate many regions in Hytale. They don’t just make the world feel alive — they’re also essential for certain resources. Even though the system is still in its infancy and there’s plenty of room for improvement, keeping animals is already a smart idea. Once breeding arrives, you’ll be able to expand your farm and gather far more resources. Let’s look at which animals currently exist and how to find, tame and start using them.
Finding animals in Hytale: zones and spawn locations

Hytale already features a wide variety of animals you can find and bring to your farm. Not all of them have a defined purpose yet — but who knows what functions will be added in future. If you’ve unlocked portals, you can even take animals through them to bring them straight to an enclosure at your base.
Each species also has young animals, which currently don’t have a direct purpose. They don’t grow and won’t provide resources. As breeding isn’t in the game yet, they’re easy to overlook — but if you don’t want to separate them from their parents, feel free to bring them along.
Animals from Zone 1 (Emerald Wilds):
- Chicken
- Turkey
- Rabbit
- Horse
- Goat
- Mosshorn
- Sheep
- Cow
- Pig
- Feral pig
- Boar
Animals from Zone 2 (Howling Sands):
- Warthog
- Ram
- Camel
- Desert chicken
- Skrill
Animals from Zone 3 (Whisperfrost Frontiers):
- Rabbit
- Cow
- Boar
- Mouflon
- Bison
There are no animals you can tame directly in Zone 4. You’ll encounter some undead cows and other animal-like beings, but you can’t lure them home — which is probably for the best.
Luring and taming animals: how to build your farm
While many systems for handling animals are still missing, luring and taming already let you make a few furry friends and use their products. Taming removes their fear of you, and you can even pet them — always a bonus! They can also provide resources or act as mounts. There isn’t much more yet, but that will change in the future.
Build pens: safe enclosures for animals

To keep your animals safe, build them a pen. These can still be a bit buggy, so play it safe. Animals can run off despite being tame, or get eaten by wolves — which you definitely don’t want.
We recommend building a pen with the following:
- At least two fences high, so nothing can escape or get in.
- A floor made of solid material (wood or stone) where no monsters can spawn.
- Light sources to keep the area well lit.
- A gate so you can enter and exit easily.
Farmer’s Workbench: essential tools for livestock

Check the Farmer’s Workbench to craft important tools for working with animals. As you upgrade the bench, you’ll unlock more options to get the most out of your livestock.
- Feed Bag: You can craft feed bags, but they don’t really do anything yet. You can place them in a pen, though it’s unclear whether animals eat from them or if they have any effect.
- Wooden Bucket: Use it to milk cows and obtain milk.
- Shears: Use them to shear sheep.
- Chicken Coop: A small hut where chickens can lay eggs. You need to assign chickens you’ve captured with the Capture Crate to the coop.
- Capture Crate: Used to capture small animals and young animals.
- Fertilizer Bag: Crafted from dung produced by livestock to speed up crop growth.
Feed list: which foods animals will follow

Different crops are important for luring and taming. Every animal has its favourite when it comes to tasty treats. When you meet one of the animals listed above, press F to find out which food it prefers. Then hold the matching food item in your hand and feed the animal. Hearts will appear and it will follow you while you hold the food. This lets you lead it safely into its pen.
Vegetables and fruit for the right animals:
- Apple: Goats, mouflon, billy goats
- Aubergine: Feral pig
- Carrot: Rabbits, horses
- Cauliflower: Bison
- Chilli: Skrill
- Maize: Chickens, turkeys
- Cotton: Desert chickens
- Lettuce: Cows, sheep
- Onion: Warthog
- Potato: Mosshorn
- Pumpkin: Boar
- Tomato: Camel
- Turnip: Pig
Animal products in Hytale: collecting and processing

Once you’ve tamed animals, they can be genuinely useful. There are already several resources you can only get from them, primarily for crafting other items. You can also ride horses, billy goats and camels once they’re tame.
You can currently obtain:
- Dung: Dropped now and then by almost every animal; used for fertiliser.
- Eggs: If you’ve assigned chickens to a Chicken Coop, you can collect one egg per day. Eggs are used for dough.
- Milk: Use the bucket on cows to obtain milk for cheese. You can also milk Mosshorns, but you’d better not drink the green milk.
- Wool scraps: Shear sheep to get wool scraps, then process them at the Furniture Workbench into wool and then cloth, and dye them. Learn more in our article (Hytale Furniture & Builder's Workbench: Furniture, Blocks, Lighting) .
- Moss: Mosshorns can sometimes drop moss.
- White feathers: Use shears on chickens to obtain white feathers, currently only needed for the Harvest Trophy.
- Red feathers: Shear Skrills for red feathers, which currently have no use.
There’s no direct breeding or reproduction yet (as of Update 4). The feature is planned for later, so getting the key animals captured now will pay off. A system for tameness is also planned, making animals trust you more — but nothing further is known yet.
Conclusion: keep animals for key resources in Hytale
There are already plenty of different animals to find in Hytale that you can tame and capture. Some even provide products used in recipes. More features are planned — breeding, of course, and other systems — but it’s already worth setting up a small farm and finding as many animals as you can.
If you don’t want to miss a Hytale update and want to jump in right away, rent one of our Hytale servers and play with your friends. As soon as animals become more useful, you’ll be ready to go.
