In Enshrouded, you can broadly choose between three different combat styles. While melee and ranged combat are straightforward, magic requires a distinctly different approach. Getting used to it can be tough at first, but the end result is one of the strongest builds in the entire game! Magic lets you wield elements directly, keep your distance and deal devastating damage. At the same time, mages can also provide support, which is essential in multiplayer. Magic in Enshrouded is extremely versatile and gives you several ways to overcome the monsters of Embervale.
Enshrouded Mage Overview: Getting Started, Playstyle and Elements
As a mage, the beginning is especially challenging: compared with other fighters you’re fairly weak and can’t yet tap into the class’s full potential. Over the course of the game, however, you become much stronger and can fully embrace every aspect of a mage build.
As a mage, you’ll use these aspects in combat:
- You can wield both small and large wands as your weapon.
- Spells are used to empower large wands.
- The skill tree lets you pursue four different paths, which you can also mix.
- Your armour should focus on mana, enhanced with suitable gems.
- Power up your character with additional rings.
- Rescue the Alchemist as soon as possible to unlock your full potential.
Enshrouded Weapons Guide: Small and Large Wands

Let’s first look at the weapons available to mages. You can choose between small and large wands, making your gameplay varied. Both have their place and shine in different situations.
In the first few hours, you’ll rely primarily on small wands. You can craft one from two bones straight away to give you at least some offensive power. We recommend heading out to search for chests to find better wands. Small wands are quick and easy to use. They consume your mana and deal damage according to their stats, which can include elemental damage. They also feature Overcharge, enabling you to land critical hits.
Large wands work differently. Think of them as empty vessels that you imbue with elemental damage. They’re far more flexible because you can tailor your damage and don’t have to rely solely on base stats. What really makes large wands shine, however, are spells!
Wands can be upgraded with gems, making them even more effective. There’s a wide selection, so pick what suits your attack style. Like other weapons, you can also enchant them up to five times to unlock better perks.
Enshrouded Spells: Elements, Recipes and Eternal Spells

Spells are your ammunition for large wands. You can either find them in the world or craft them at the Alchemist, which is why you should rescue him and place him at your base as soon as you can. After that, decide which spells are worth it and which you can craft with your available ingredients.
Spells are sorted by element:
- Fire
- Ice
- Lightning
- Poison
- Healing
- Shroud
Each spell also has requirements and stats:
- Level requirement
- Damage, which scales with your wand
- Mana cost
- Speed
- Single-use or Eternal
Sooner or later, you should work towards unlocking the Eternal spells for every element. These are much better, as they deal more damage and are not consumed. However, they also have higher mana costs and the recipes are more complex.
Enshrouded Mage Skills: Talent Tree, Builds and Synergies

Like the other combat styles, you can develop in four directions, and you can combine skills freely. The magic branch is especially diverse and gives you incredible late-game power, letting you defeat even the strongest enemies. The early game can be tough, as you have little mana, few spells and only weak small wands. During the first 15 levels, focus on improving exactly those aspects.
For the early game, we recommend starting with the Battlemage branch. This lets you increase your Intelligence, which in turn grants more mana. Unlock the skills up to “Wand Mastery” so you can fire two projectiles at once. “Blink” is also essential, letting you teleport when you dodge-roll.
Then move into the Wizard section, which houses most of the skills that boost your damage. This is also where elemental damage comes into play, as the later branches focus on Ice, Fire or Lightning.
For multiplayer, the Healing-focused skills are also worthwhile. You can use them in single-player too when things get dicey.
Lastly, there’s the Rogue branch, which is quite specialised. It pairs well with Assassin and is more about reflecting damage and outsmarting your enemies. The skills that increase your Intelligence are still worthwhile.
Enshrouded Gear for Mages: Mana Regeneration and Armour

Finally, your gear needs to be on point. Mages have different armour sets per region, aligned to your level. You can craft some at the Alchemist, but you’ll need to find the rare sets in their respective areas. We recommend swapping your armour by biome to get the most out of it. It often grants bonus mana and regeneration.
There are more equipment pieces you can wear. For mages, the Diadem of Lightning is extremely strong and can be obtained via a quest. You should also pick up the Ice or Fire gloves.
There are two more equipment types:
- Shields: You can use both normal and magical shields. These are especially good if you’re a small-wand fighter. Magical shields from the Alchemist grant mana regeneration.
- Rings: You can wear two rings at once for extra buffs. Mana rings are the best for mages, but experiment with others as well. Some heal you or increase your elemental damage.
Conclusion: Best Enshrouded Mage Build and Tips
Mages are the strongest class to pick in the later stages of Enshrouded. Use both small wands and large wands with the right spells to maximise your elemental damage. With enough mana regeneration from your gear, Eternal spells and effective skills, you can dispatch even very tough enemies in no time.
If you rent one of our Enshrouded servers, you can jump straight in as a mage. Once you’ve rescued the Alchemist, you’ll have countless ways to enhance your magical powers.
