In Enshrouded you can not only explore a large hand-crafted map, but also bring your finds back home and cultivate them. A safe, attractive base is the hub of the game: it’s where you rest, house your NPCs, and grow your own plants. You’ll find familiar and unfamiliar seeds scattered across the map that you should take back to your base. There, you can plant and breed them as you like. Why it’s worth doing and how to set up your own small farm is exactly what this guide covers.
Getting started with Enshrouded farming: grow crops and find the Farmer

To begin growing crops, you first need to find the Farmer. She’s one of the many survivors hiding in Enshrouded’s world who need your help. You’ll find her in the Ancient Vault and can bring her back to your base. There, she offers additional quests around farming and animal husbandry, though you can also jump straight into tending your own fields.
At the Farmer’s, you should first craft a seedbed to turn found plants into seeds. You’ll need farm soil, which you can make from regular soil and bone dust. While you can simply collect soil, you must craft bone dust at the grindstone from bones. You’ll get bones from dead animals, and you can make a grindstone yourself after mining stone.
1. Craft seeds at the seedbed: resources and requirements

While exploring Embervale, you’ll find all sorts of plants. You should always pick them up so you can grow them later. At the seedbed, you can convert them into seeds. Depending on the plant, different conditions apply.
You’ll always need the plant itself, but often additional ingredients as well:
- Water: Draw it from a well you can build once you’ve unlocked the Carpenter. Alternatively, use a watering can or portable pumps.
- Sand: Can be mined in the desert region (Kindlewastes).
- Nitrate: Crafted in the laboratory from sand, shroud sand, wood acid, and salt. For this, you must first find the Alchemist. You’ll need a charcoal kiln to make wood acid.
- Fossilised bone dust: Made from fossilised bones mined in the desert and processed at the grindstone.
- Farm soil: Crafted from soil and bone dust. Alternatively, it can be dug up from other beds.
- Fertilised farm soil: Improve farm soil with fertiliser such as nitrate and water to optimise growth conditions.
Some plants and seeds are only accessible later in the game due to their requirements. The easiest to start with are plants that need only a few materials or can be turned into seeds using just the plants themselves. For the beginning we recommend nettles, chamomile, maize, or beetroot. Normal bushes are also very important for materials. Depending on the plant type, you’ll receive 5 to 20 units.
2. Sow seeds: soil types and building fields

Once you’ve crafted seeds at the seedbed, you can sow them. You can use various substrates: sand, soil, potting soil, farm soil, or fertilised farm soil. The soil from different regions can also vary. Farm soil and fertilised farm soil are strongly recommended, as most plants grow better there.
Open the build menu and scroll to Terrain. There you can select and place the desired substrate. We’ve already explained more about the building system in another article: (Enshrouded: Build a starter house with workbench and Flame Altar) . You can expand your fields as you please and decorate them with other materials. Your creativity has no limits here.
You can either place seeds manually and fine-tune the spacing between plants, or use the snapping tool, which you can toggle on and off in the bottom right. This lets you sow seeds much faster and finish the field in no time.
3. Harvest and seed multiplication: growth and drops
Once the growth time has passed, you can harvest your fully grown plants. You’ll always receive the corresponding produce, plus plenty of new seeds. You can sow these again to multiply your stock alongside the seedbed. This makes crop farming a form of self-sufficiency, as you’ll be able to harvest enough on a permanent basis.
Enshrouded Update 7 – Wake of the Water: soils and watering can

The new “Wake of the Water” update brought several additions to Enshrouded that rework plant growing. Alongside many new plant types, there are mechanics that make your beds more efficient:
- With the watering can in hand, you can now view information about a plant, including growth status, preferred soil, and water supply.
- Pause a plant’s growth at a specific stage with the watering can to use it decoratively.
- New and improved growth animations.
- Underwater seeds for crops such as rice, which you must submerge in water to grow.
Plant types in Enshrouded: uses and recipes

Finally, let’s look at which plants you can grow. Thanks to its biomes, Enshrouded’s world is very diverse. You’ll find and later grow all sorts of different plant types. They also have different applications that are important for other aspects of the game.
- Fruit: Plants such as strawberries, wild berries, the yucca palm, or pumpkins. These are primarily used for cooking and providing buffs.
- Vegetables: You can cook all sorts of delicious dishes from vegetables too. Use tomatoes, peppers, or ginger as ingredients.
- Mushrooms: Mushrooms are important for cooking and make a great snack, especially for mages.
- Grains: Grains are often a staple ingredient for foods, as you make flour from wheat, for example. There’s also maize and rice for further recipes.
- Herbs: A herb garden is very important, as it lets you craft healing foods. Whether chamomile, rooibos, saffron, sage, or nettles, there are many great plants to choose from.
- Trees: Create a tree farm to gather wood, leaves, and resin.
- Wild plants: All remaining seedlings are grouped under wild plants. Here you can grow flax, aloe vera, hazelnuts, or coconuts, which are needed for various recipes.
Conclusion: farming tips and Update 7 highlights
Once you’ve built a safe base in Enshrouded, you should also set up and tend your own field. Many resources are needed to make food and remedies, but you can also mass-produce other materials like wood or sticks. With Update 7, many exciting additions have arrived, including new watering can functionality that’s especially helpful for decorations.
