As in any good survival game, armour is a key stat, and in Enshrouded in particular you need to be able to defend yourself against your foes. Once again, it shows just how extensive and deep the mechanics in Enshrouded really are, and how much more you can do here compared to other games of its kind. From countless armour sets and different classes to a transmog system, there are numerous nuances that set this survival title apart. We’ll take a detailed look at armour, how to use it, and how to tailor it to your needs.
Enshrouded armour guide: stats, looks and where to find them

Armour in Enshrouded is there to protect you against attacks. At the same time, it provides additional buffs and attributes that focus on different combat styles. It’s important to find the equipment that suits your character.
There’s one slot each for:
- Head
- Torso
- Hands
- Legs
- Feet
Every armour piece also has four statistics to watch:
- Level requirement to equip the item
- Physical defence
- Magical defence
- Up to four additional properties for your character (not all pieces have these)
In the character menu, you’ll see all equipped items, and top right you can also view your combined defence against physical and magical attacks. As a rule of thumb: the higher, the better. There are no further categories such as light or heavy armour.
Getting armour in Enshrouded: crafting, quests and drops
You can either craft armour yourself or find it in the world of Enshrouded. When it comes to crafting, most recipes are tied to quests in the different biomes. The same goes for the materials you’ll need for crafting. Sometimes you unlock recipes by picking up a specific material. You’ll also need a specific NPC, depending on which armour you want to make. More on that below when we look at the different classes.
Alternatively, you can find some armour pieces in the world. These are often special and unique, so they’re well worth hunting down. You’ll get them either from hidden chests or as loot from monsters you defeat.
Dyeing and transmog in Enshrouded: cosmetic upgrades

You can do even more with the armour you find. To make your outfit unique, you can dye your gear. For this you’ll need the dyeing station from the Alchemist. You unlock it once you can craft fired bricks. There’s a wide selection of colour combinations you can either find or craft yourself. Some require very specific items to achieve the desired colour. Dyed armour pieces are marked with an asterisk in the menu.

The second option for even more personalisation is the transmog system. This lets you wear strong armour without committing to its look. You effectively wear a second layer that’s purely cosmetic. That way you stay powerful while sporting your favourite looks. You can also hide certain pieces, such as gloves or hoods. Customise your outfit in the character menu by pressing R.
Enshrouded armour sets for every playstyle
As mentioned, armour is always tailored to a certain type of fighter. You can learn more in our skill points guide (Enshrouded Skill Tree Guide: All skills, builds and tips) . Almost every armour comes as a set of five pieces that combine into an outfit. You don’t have to wear a full set, as there are no set bonuses. However, the pieces form a cohesive look and always focus on particular attributes.
It’s also worth noting there isn’t one single best armour in Enshrouded. It always depends on your playstyle and your progression. Every piece has a level requirement, so you can’t equip gear from later regions right away. Focus on the additional effects and the armour values instead.
Switch your armour when you enter a new region. Each area offers different sets to choose from. The best sets are often found, which makes them rarer and more distinctive.
Best melee armour in Enshrouded

Melee gear is defined above all by its high defence. You’re in the thick of it and must face enemies head-on. To craft melee armour, first rescue the Blacksmith and house him at your base. You can then craft armour pieces with him.
Traits of melee armour:
- more health
- more stamina
- faster health regeneration
- more damage for certain attack patterns
- critical damage
- longer resistance to the Shroud
Best mage armour in Enshrouded

Magical armour pieces are crafted via the Alchemist. If you want to focus on magic, unlock him quickly and give him a nice spot in your base. Spells are very strong in Enshrouded, so these armours aim to make them even stronger. They offer less defence, but you should be keeping your distance anyway.
Traits of mage armour:
- more mana
- faster mana regeneration
- magical critical hits
- healing
- damage against magical enemies
- focus on wand and staff
- longer resistance to the Shroud
Best ranged and Ranger armour in Enshrouded

For ranged and Ranger gear you’ll need the Hunter, who can craft the relevant sets. This armour has the lowest defence of all, but it’s perfect for long-range combat. It also places a strong focus on stamina.
Traits of Ranger armour:
- more stamina
- stamina regeneration
- more thrown-knife damage
- more arrow damage
- critical ranged damage
- sneak attack damage
- longer resistance to the Shroud
Stylish outfits without defence for transmog

Finally, there are armour pieces not suited for combat. These are usually far more colourful or simply stylish. Some can be crafted, but most are tied to a special quest or an event. Keep an eye out, as some are time-limited or only available outside the game, for example via Twitch Drops. Some sets can only be crafted at the Bard, so you’ll need to find him first. Outfits like these are perfect for transmog: they offer no defence, but often look better than regular armour.
Conclusion: armour tips for Enshrouded
Armour is a complex part of Enshrouded and gives you plenty of ways to customise your character. Not only are the sets geared towards specific combat styles, you can dye each piece individually or hide it with the transmog system. Each region usually offers a handful of sets, and the levelling system adds even more variety.
