On 14 December 2021, Lost Island arrived as another free map for ARK: Survival Evolved. After the vibrant Crystal Isles, this expansion marked a return to a harsher, more archaic aesthetic. Lost Island feels like a newly discovered continent – ancient, wild, mystical, and dangerous.
The map once again began life as a community project. Originally developed by modders Eckert, FishFiend and Garuga123, it was officially adopted into the base game by Studio Wildcard. At over 150 square kilometres, Lost Island is one of the largest maps in the game, combining many elements of earlier DLCs into a single, sweeping landscape. Tropical rainforests meet snow-covered mountains, lava fields border dense swamps, and endless plains give way to ancient ruins.
At the centre of the map towers the active volcano Tyran’s Maw, its lava flows running like veins through the land. Around it stretch forests, jungles and rivers that plunge into colossal waterfalls. Ruins, temples, and mysterious structures of a forgotten culture are scattered across Lost Island. Particularly striking is the ruined complex of Nalada, a vast temple site inspired by Mesoamerican architecture. Among crumbling walls and overgrown statues, wild creatures lurk alongside hidden treasures.
The underground is equally spectacular: deep caves filled with crystals, lava, and water thread through the map. Some are pure dungeons, others lead to hidden boss arenas. New creatures in ARK Lost Island: Amargasaurus, Sinomacrops, Dinopithecus
Lost Island introduced three completely new creatures:
- Amargasaurus: A spiny sauropod that manipulates thermal energy. Its dorsal spines can be heated or cooled to scorch or slow enemies – a mobile weapon in combat and an imposing companion in daily life.
- Sinomacrops: A small, winged shoulder-glider. It enables gliding and wards off insects – ideal for travelling through forests and swamps.
- Dinopithecus: A prehistoric baboon – strong, clever, and social. Packs can scale walls, throw rocks, and even use grenades. The pack leader can be tamed and will then command the troop.

Lost Island is rich in resources – but unevenly distributed. Metal, crystal, and oil are found mainly in mountain ranges and volcanic zones; wood, fibre, and berries dominate the jungles.
The map rewards smart resource management: settle too far from water and you risk droughts; build too close to the volcano and you live dangerously. Rivers and lakes are ideal for bases with water access, and the stable temperatures make longer construction and taming projects more comfortable.
The Desert Region in the southwest also brings back the challenges of Scorched Earth: extreme heat, sandstorms, and scarce resources. This variety reads like a compendium of the best elements from earlier worlds.
Base building on ARK Lost Island: best spots, Redwoods & volcano
With broad plains, plateaus, and cliffs, Lost Island is a builder’s paradise. The area around the Redwood Forests is particularly popular: towering trees and gentle hills are perfect for treehouses. The central boss is the Dinopithecus King – a gigantic, glowing variant of the Dinopithecus. The fight takes place in a monumental arena amid ancient ruins.
The boss blends raw power with strategy: it summons adds, aggressively leaps into groups, and deals area damage with energy attacks. Recommended are strong mounts (e.g. a Rex army), a Yutyrannus courage buff, Daeodon healing, plus quality saddles and medical supplies. Victory feels like conquering the wild itself – primal, dangerous, and liberating.
Atmosphere, graphics & sound design of the ARK Lost Island map
Lost Island impresses not only mechanically but also atmospherically: insects chirp, water roars, and the distant rumble of the volcano echoes through the valleys. The music shifts between calm, meditative pieces and powerful orchestral themes in battles or hazardous zones – heightening the sense of a living world.
Visually, its natural colour palette and lighting stand out. Sunrises over the savannahs and mist over the jungles give the map an almost cinematic look.
Why ARK Lost Island is so popular
Lost Island unites the best elements of earlier maps – the vastness of Ragnarok, the danger of Scorched Earth, the verticality of Valguero, and the vibrancy of The Island. Many servers use it as their “main map” because it suits PvE and PvP alike: plenty of room for peaceful coexistence with a constant undercurrent of tension.
The three new creatures also became instant favourites. The Sinomacrops, in particular, changed travel: gliding and energy savings make movement more dynamic and intuitive.

With Lost Island, ARK returns to its core: a wild, mysterious world where nature, imagination, and survival instinct converge. The map feels less like an experiment and more like an homage – a love letter to what made ARK great.
