Just like its predecessor The Forest, Sons of the Forest hides some secrets that reward long-term players and island regulars with cool gadgets. One of them is the rare artifact, which you first have to assemble from seven small pieces. It’s meant for players who haven’t just explored the entire map but have also finished the story and want to remain on the island. It’s absolutely worth it—the functions are incredibly practical if you plan to keep playing. With our guide, you’ll not only find and assemble all seven pieces, but also master the artifact itself!
Artifact pieces in Sons of the Forest: All locations on the map

To craft the artifact, you first need to find the matching pieces. You may have spotted some on your cave adventures already, but a few are much harder to locate than others. You must finish the story for the final piece—more on that in the next section.
Location 1: Northern beach cave – Stun Gun and artifact piece
This artifact piece is fairly easy to find, and you might already have it in your inventory. If not, return to the cave on the northern beach where you can also find the Rebreather. Stick to the right-hand side and follow the cave deeper down. There you’ll find not only the Stun Gun, but also the artifact piece. You’ll recognize it immediately—it lies on a golden altar, and your character picks it up with a special animation.
Location 2: Rope Gun cave – Rope Gun section
Next, head back to the cave where you found the Rope Gun (zipline gun). If you fully explored the cave, the artifact piece is hard to miss. Follow the ropes farther down and stay along the right-hand edge to reach the piece shortly after. Once you notice hanging skeletons and golden decorations on the walls, you’re on the right track!
Location 3: Ancient Armor cave – Western entrance (part 1)
You’ll find the next two artifact pieces in the same cave where you can also get the Ancient Armor. This cave runs straight through the middle of the map, beneath the big mountain. There are multiple entrances, and it’s the longest, largest cave in the entire game.
For the first piece, use the entrance on the west side of the mountain, by the lake that looks like two connected circles. The cave is quite linear, so you can’t go too wrong. Dive through several sections and slide deeper down until you see golden markings again. Once you reach a large chamber with gold, keep following the faint light. You’ll eventually arrive at a crashed spacecraft. The piece is in the pilot’s hand, just like the Ancient Armor.
Location 4: Ancient Armor cave – Further section (part 2)
After you’ve found the first piece in this cave, take the spiral staircase up from the spacecraft and keep following the cave, climbing a few ropes along the way. Again, the path is linear and will lead you straight to the artifact piece. Golden decorations point the way. Look for a narrow stone ledge. The artifact is set into the floor within a square of gold.
Location 5: Pickaxe cave – Solafite and artifact piece
You’ll find the cave with the Pickaxe and Solafite below the golf course, at the lower of the two small ponds connected by a stream. A rope lets you descend into the cave. Follow the waterfall on the right and swim through several sections. You’ll need to break through some wooden planks here and there, but then you should recognize the characteristic golden beams again. The artifact is once more embedded in the floor, bordered by gold.
Location 6: Northeastern beach – Hidden fishing hut
Walk along the beach east of the golf course until you see a fishing hut with two armchairs. Inside, you’ll find a hidden entrance to the cave with the last artifact piece you can obtain before finishing the story. Follow the basement corridor blocked with wood. You’ll eventually come across golden crosses and skeletons guiding your way. The artifact is just a single rope descent away, on an altar surrounded by gilded skeletons.
Location 7: Final artifact after the ending – Stay on the island

After the final boss fight, you can choose to stay on the island or leave. Pick up your backpack and stay on the island. You’ll then see beams of light in the sky that guide you to the last artifact piece. The entrance to this cave is on the east side, not far from the Pickaxe cave. It simply descends via a spiral staircase. Break a few planks, and at the bottom you’ll find the final artifact piece waiting for you.
Using the artifact in Sons of the Forest: Functions, modes, and Solafite charge

After finding all seven pieces, you can assemble them in your inventory. The artifact is now ready to use! However, you must charge it with Solafite ore before you can activate it. You can tell how full it is by the red bars that appear when you hold it. When you look at the ground while holding the artifact, you can switch modes to unlock different functions.

Basically, you can use the artifact for four functions:
- Gild objects: When the artifact “spreads its wings” and a blue beam appears, you can gild structures and furniture. They don’t just look great—they also withstand much more damage.
- Teleport: First activate the Teleporter with the blue beam, then switch the artifact to Sphere mode and teleport back to the Teleporter. This works anywhere on the map, even in caves and bunkers. Each use costs 1 Solafite.
- Attraction Shrine: Use the artifact to activate this structure and lure cannibals and mutants to you. While active, it produces Solafite. It’s a risk, but the rewards are substantial.
- Defense Shrine: Build this shrine to actively repel monsters. In addition to the artifact, you need 6× Solafite ore to activate it. Each piece is consumed every 3:20 minutes, giving you 20 minutes of protection.
Practical tips for efficient artifact use
- Save Solafite for Teleport jumps and critical moments in caves.
- Mark bases and key points with Teleporter opportunities before delving deep into caves.
- Use Gilding strategically on load-bearing walls, doors, and defenses to make your base tougher.
- Activate the Defense Shrine ahead of major attacks; combine it with traps for maximum safety.
Conclusion
Sons of the Forest is worth playing even (or especially) after you finish the story. That’s when you gain access to awesome tools like the artifact! This golden sphere can teleport you across the entire map, summon or repel monsters, and even produce Solafite for you. And if you want to upgrade your base, use its power to gild furniture and walls.
