Fishing was added with Update 0.6, so it hasn’t been in the game for very long. That means some newer players might not know about the feature yet! Fishing is a great way to gather both Pals and items. The seas around Palpagos Island are packed with treasure, so it’s worth casting your line now and then. Sometimes you’ll even reel in Alpha Pals or Pals with extremely strong passive abilities you won’t want to miss! Today we’ll cover all the mechanics, what to watch out for, and the best places to fish.
Palworld fishing basics: gear and the minigame
You’ll need a few things before you can start fishing. That includes the fishing rod itself, of course, as well as the right bait. Certain Pals can also help you fish faster and more efficiently with their Partner Skills. The further you progress, the better your fishing can get.
Fishing rods and bait in Palworld: how to gear up

There are currently 6 fishing rods you can unlock and craft in Palworld. These are aimed at beginners (blue), advanced players (green), and pros (yellow), with two rods per tier. Each rod increases the size of the bar you see while fishing, making it easier to catch Pals.
All six rods at a glance:
- Beginner Rod (Chillet): Technology level 15 with a normal bar size
- Beginner Rod (Gumoss): Schematics with x1.1 bar size
- Advanced Rod (Cattiva): Technology level 29 with x1.3 bar size
- Advanced Rod (Croajiro): Schematics with x1.4 bar size
- Pro Rod (Pengullet): Technology level 45 with x1.8 bar size
- Pro Rod (Depresso): Schematics with x1.9 bar size
You’ll also need different bait to lure Pals. There are four types. You craft them from Pal Fluid or High-Quality Pal Oil and Flour, plus other foods like tomatoes, onions, or carrots. You can set up the necessary farms in your base.
The bait types are:
- Simple bait (no bonus)
- High-Quality bait (increased bite rate)
- Luxury bait (larger minigame bar)
- Alluring bait (even larger bar and more item drops from caught Pals)
There’s also a Super Fishing Magnet, which you can only unlock at level 61. It’s primarily for salvaging treasure and is mostly needed later in the game. You can search for treasure earlier, but you’ll have less luck.
Best Partner Skills and Pals for fishing in Palworld

Beyond rods and bait, Pals are very helpful, as some have special Partner Skills that assist with fishing. Keep an eye out for these four:
- Whalaska (Ignis): The catch meter starts partially filled and fills faster while fishing.
- Ghangler (Ignis): Pals bite faster when Ghangler is active.
- Jellroy: More and better loot from salvage while fishing.
- Jelliette: More items from fishing.
Palworld fishing minigame and salvaging explained

With your preparations done, it’s time to fish. Like many survival titles, you’ll complete a small minigame to earn Pals and items. It’s not complicated, and you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
How fishing works:
- Find a suitable location where you can see shadows in the water.
- Aim your rod so you’re near a shadow of your choice.
- Select your bait and cast the rod.
- Wait patiently.
- When the yellow exclamation marks (!!) appear, press the left mouse button to hook the catch.
- Repeatedly click the left mouse button so the green bar tracks the yellow fish.
- Continue until the upper circle fills and the Pal is caught.
Voilà! You’ve caught a Pal and likely pulled some extra items from the sea. Your fishing yields vary based on your gear, Pals, and location. You can also target specific Pals—watch the shadows and their sparkles.

- No sparkles: Normal Pal
- Purple sparkles: Alpha Pal
- Green sparkles: Pal with Rainbow passive abilities
- Fountain of sparkles: Pal with the Pond Lord passive ability

You can also search for treasure on the open sea at locations where you can perform salvage. You must ride a water Pal; otherwise, this function isn’t available. The magnet helps you find rare items. This minigame is different: a circle appears with a moving yellow line. Press F at the right moment when the yellow line is within the green bar.
Best fishing spots in Palworld: locations for Pals and loot

You can fish pretty much anywhere on the island—just look for shadows in the water. Different regions have different Pals. For a fully detailed map, we recommend PalDB, where you can filter by levels.
The best fishing spots are far to the south, mainly on Feybreak Island, its dungeons, and the nearby Oil Rig. You’ll also find the best salvage locations there—search the seas between Feybreak and Mount Obsidian.
The Pals themselves may matter less than the haul. With the magnet and the right spots, you can pull in massive riches.
You can find:
- Coralium Ore
- Pal Souls
- Blueprints for weapons and armor
- Applied Workbooks (for work tasks)
- Pal Equipment
- Gold Coins
- Training Manuals
- Spheres
- Gems
- Tech Manuals
Passive fishing in your Palworld base with Fish Ponds

If you don’t want to fish yourself and prefer to acquire Pals and items passively, build a few Fish Ponds in your base. You unlock the first pond at level 31 and the second at level 55. Stock each with bait and assign a Pal with Handiwork suitability to passively gather items and Pals. The larger the shadow, the rarer the potential finds. The loot matches what you can get from regular fishing or salvaging.
Conclusion: fishing in Palworld for rare items and Pals
Fishing in Palworld isn’t just a relaxing pastime—it becomes extremely important later for rare items. You can start early by unlocking your first rod at level 15 to hunt for specific Pals or snag useful items. Keep upgrading your gear to secure better Pals and loot. You can also leverage Partner Skills like those from Whalaska or Jellroy to boost your results.
