Your Pals in Palworld come with a variety of stats and abilities you can put to work. In addition to partner skills, base stats, work suitability, and attacks, there are also passive skills. And that’s where some truly powerful combinations hide that will make you see many Pals in a whole new light! Passive skills can massively buff an otherwise weak Pal, turn it into a true workhorse, or make it much faster. With more than 80 different skills, the possibilities are endless and you can test tons of combos. Today we’ll take a closer look at how to obtain and transfer the right passives!

Passive skills in Palworld: How they work, tiers, and RNG

Overview of passive skills in Palworld with bonus tiers and arrow markers

Passive skills are additional bonuses a Pal can have. Each Pal can have up to four of these skills, which you can view in the Pal stats at the bottom left. These abilities can have many different effects, both negative and positive. Some are much weaker than others, so it’s important to get the right passive skills on every Pal you catch.

In general, these skills are rolled at random when you capture a Pal. You can’t know in advance which skills a Pal will have. However, some passives are predetermined—for example, Digtoise always has Hard as Nails, while Neptilius always has Pond Lord.

In terms of power, passive skills range from -3 to +3, indicated by the arrows next to the name. Red arrows pointing down have negative effects; arrows pointing up provide positive values. There are also rainbow skills, which are even stronger.

Transferring passive skills in Palworld: Capture, breeding, and the surgery table

Yakumo, breeding, and the surgery table used to transfer passive skills in Palworld

Since most passives are random, you’ll need to assemble your perfect Pal by other means. There are now several in-game options you can combine.

  • Catch Pals: Because passives are rerolled with every capture, you can simply go hunting for great Pals without any aids at all.
  • Yakumo partner ability: Even better, catch a Yakumo and use it to pass on strong passives. Thanks to its ability, Yakumo can transfer some of its passive skills to captured Pals while its ability is active. So first build a solid Yakumo, then go hunting together!
  • Breeding: Far more controlled—but also more involved—is direct Pal breeding. We already have a guide if you want to learn more (Palworld Breeding Guide 2026: Breeding Farm, Incubator, and Cake) . Breeding lets you inherit specific passive skills.
  • Pal Surgery Table and implants: A newer transfer method uses the surgery table. You unlock it at Technology Level 36 for 3 points. You can change your Pal’s sex and swap specific passives using implants. Implants are a one-time purchase from certain vendors and can be used as often as you like afterward. Some skills are built in; the best implants must be purchased (Bounty Hunter and Arena shop).

The best passive skills in Palworld for base work, combat, and exploration

Now that you know the basics of passives, which ones are actually worth it? That largely depends on your playstyle, since any Pal can be used for different purposes. A Pal stationed at your base obviously needs different passives than a Pal that supports you in combat.

There isn’t one universally perfect combination, but some passives stand out for how well they perform. Let’s go through the three common use cases for Pals and see which passives shine in each.

Base-building: Best passive skills for worker Pals

Pals working at a base with passives for higher work speed and stability

Pals at your base should focus on working, so passives that improve sanity, boost work speed, increase yields, and reduce hunger are strong. Some of those aspects can also be boosted by other means, such as decor or partner abilities.

Rainbow passives:

  • Golden Touch: Work speed +75%
  • Ascetic: Hunger drains 20% slower
  • Unshakable: Sanity drains 20% slower
  • Philanthropist: Egg-laying rate +100%

Tier-3 passives:

  • Artisan: Work speed +50%
  • Fasting Pro: Hunger drains 15% slower
  • Workaholic: Sanity drains 15% slower

Tier-1 passives:

  • Diligent: Work speed +20%
  • Workhorse: Work speed +30%, but -30% Attack
  • Nocturnal: Pal also works at night
  • Positive Thinking: Sanity drains 10% slower

Combat setup: Best passives for damage and defense

Combat in Palworld with passives for attack, defense, and elements

Combat passives are tougher to pin down because it depends on your exact opponent. You can stack general power, boost your defense, or go all-in on a single element. There are many viable combinations, and some of these passives are hard to obtain.

Rainbow passives:

  • Diamond Body: Defense +30%
  • Legendary: Attack +20%, Defense +20%, Movement Speed +15%
  • Shadow Sovereign: Attack +30%, Defense +5%
  • Witch, Eternal Blaze, Intruder, Redeemer: Each provides +30% to two elements
  • Vampire: Absorbs enemy HP on hit (+ Nocturnal)

Tier-3 passives:

  • Sturdy Build: Defense +20%
  • Wild: Attack +20%
  • Element skills: +20% damage for a given element
  • Focus: Attack cooldown -30%, Attack +10%

Tier-2 passives:

  • More Brawn Than Brains: Attack +30%, but Work speed -50%

Tier-1 passives:

  • Brave: Attack +10%
  • Sadist: Attack +15%, Defense -15%
  • Brute: Attack +15%, Defense -10%

Exploration and riding: Best passives for speed and stamina

Rideable Pals benefit from different passives. These generally focus on speed and stamina, but also depend on how your Pal travels. Whether on land, in the air, or in water, each Pal needs its own mix of passives.

Rainbow passives:

  • Lightning Fast: Movement Speed +30%
  • Endless Drive: Stamina +75%
  • Wave King: Movement Speed in water +50%

Tier-3 passives:

  • Runner: Movement Speed +20%
  • Tireless: Stamina +50%
  • Strong Swimmer: Movement Speed in water +40%

Tier-1 passives:

  • Swift: Movement Speed +10%
  • Fit as a Fiddle: Stamina +25%
  • Streamlined: Movement Speed in water +30%

Conclusion: Your Pals’ passives make all the difference

To get the most out of your Pals, assemble a strong combination of four passive skills. While they’re random at first, breeding or Pal surgery lets you assign them intentionally and build perfect Pals for combat, work, or exploration. Even weaker or slower Pals can be tailored to your needs and elevated with the right passives!
