The first Minecraft Live 2026 livestream has wrapped and, once again, it brought plenty of exciting news for the game. With Tiny Takeover already lined up as the first drop and Chaos Cubed confirmed as the second small update of the year, we’re taking a closer look at both and what you can look forward to in spring and summer. Expect adorable baby mobs, long-awaited crafting recipes, and a brand-new cave biome.

Minecraft versioning in 2026: New numbering system for drops 26.1 and 26.2

If you’ve been playing on Snapshots lately or already have the new drop available, you’ve likely noticed the new Minecraft version numbering. It’s meant to reduce confusion. All new drops are now tied to their year and quarter. Until now, major updates were numbered incrementally from release 1.0 up to update 1.21. That changes starting in 2026.

The new format follows the current year, in this case 26. It’s followed by the number of the current drop. Tiny Takeover is 26.1, Chaos Cubed is 26.2. Small patches or bug fixes add another digit, for example 26.1.1. So if you’re updating to the new version or upgrading your server, don’t be thrown off by the new format.

Minecraft Tiny Takeover 26.1: March update with baby mobs and the Golden Dandelion

Snapshots for the first drop of 2026: Tiny Takeover have been running since the start of the year. It’s all about baby animals, which were previously just mini versions of their parents. That changes now, as all creatures in Minecraft are getting a rework. On top of that, there are two new recipes to help you bond more closely with your animals. The drop releases on March 24, 2026.

Minecraft baby mobs: New models, textures, and sounds

New Minecraft baby mobs with unique models and sounds in the Tiny Takeover update 26.1

Baby animals have been around since release 1.0 and the introduction of breeding, but for 15 years they were essentially just scaled-down adults. Now babies get their own models and textures, bringing fresh life to your farm.

Literally every mob that can have offspring has been reworked—from cows, sheep, and pigs to zombies, turtles, and even squids. They’re now cuter and have unique sounds. Some even have personalities, including regal cats or moody cows with distinct vocalizations. It’s genuinely fun to interact with all the little ones.

Rabbits got a complete overhaul too—even the parents have a new model. They’re fluffier and chubbier with new animations. It’s worth keeping an eye out for the different rabbit variants.

Golden Dandelion in Minecraft: Keep animals young forever

Golden Dandelion in Minecraft keeps baby mobs permanently small in update 26.1

You can also keep your favorites small permanently. With the new Golden Dandelion, baby animals stay tiny and won’t grow up. That’s perfect if there’s a specific texture or look you especially like. Take a Dandelion and surround it with eight Gold Nuggets to craft a Golden Dandelion. Feed it to a baby and it won’t grow. You can revert this by feeding the animal another Golden Dandelion. Particle effects indicate which state the animal is in.

Crafting Name Tags in Minecraft: New recipe and adjustments

Another big change echoes the previous drop, where you could finally craft Saddles. Now it’s Name Tags’ turn with a dedicated recipe. A Nugget of iron, copper, or gold and Paper placed diagonally are enough to craft a Name Tag. Perfect for your new animals—you can now give unlimited nicknames.

As a result, Name Tags have been removed from some loot pools. Librarians no longer sell them, and they’re no longer found in Woodland Mansions or Ancient Cities. Instead, they can now appear with the Wandering Trader.

Minecraft Chaos Cubed 26.2: Summer drop with Sulfur Caves, Cinnabar, and Sulfur Cubes

The Minecraft Live livestream also announced the next drop, bringing new gameplay mechanics and a new biome. Underground, you’ll be able to find Sulfur Caves with distinctive red and yellow blocks to mine. You’ll also encounter a new mob, the Sulfur Cube. Snapshots for the second drop of 2026 are expected to start in April, with the update landing in June or July.

Sulfur Caves in Minecraft: Cinnabar and Sulfur blocks as new building materials

Alongside lush caves and dripstone caves, another underground biome joins the roster. Sulfur Caves are made up of yellow Sulfur blocks and red Cinnabar blocks, making them easy to spot. There are also pools that emit strange odors. Thanks to potent sulfur, bubbles rise to the surface, which looks striking. Don’t bathe in it or you’ll feel sick.

The new building blocks are especially exciting. With yellow Sulfur and red Cinnabar, the game gets two new block palettes. Already shown are polished and chiseled variants, plus bricks, walls, stairs, and slabs for both stone types. That opens up tons of decorative building options.

Sulfur Cube mob: Inherits block properties for creative sandbox gameplay

New Sulfur Cube mob in Minecraft inherits block properties in the Chaos Cubed update

For sandbox players, Sulfur Cubes are particularly intriguing. They’re based on green Slimes and Nether Magma Cubes but won’t attack you. You’ll find them in Sulfur Caves.

Sulfur Cubes have a unique ability: they absorb a block and inherit its properties. How far this goes isn’t fully known yet. Shown so far: ice makes them slipperier, metal blocks make them heavier, and wool makes them lighter. This feature promises creative sandbox gameplay.

Conclusion on Minecraft 2026 updates: Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed at a glance

With Tiny Takeover and Chaos Cubed, two of the usually four yearly drops are known. The game will both revamp classic features and add new locations and mobs. Expect fully new baby models with sounds, craftable Name Tags, and the Golden Dandelion. Soon, Sulfur Caves with new building blocks and unique Sulfur Cubes will join the mix.
