Resin was added to Minecraft with “The Garden Awakens” in version 1.21.4 and is a building block many players tend to underestimate. That’s partly due to its rarity, as it can only be found in a specific biome. However, resin has a beautiful, bright orange hue that’s fantastic for building. That makes it worth automating. Resin can be made renewable in a unique way that takes a bit of work. We’ll look at these mechanics in detail and show you how to build a farm.

Finding resin in Minecraft: location, Knarz, and drop sources

Finding resin in Minecraft in the Pale Oak Forest with Knarz

Like in real life, resin is found on trees. But not every tree type in Minecraft gives you resin, which makes things a bit tricky. You’ll need to search for a Pale Oak Forest, because that’s the only place you can find the orange resin. These eerie, creepy woods are a sub-biome of the Dark Oak Forest and consist of gray-looking oaks that are hard to miss. The sky also turns gray-white when you’re there. Depending on the seed, they can be very small or take over a large part of a Dark Oak Forest. You can find more about the biome in our article (Minecraft Pale Garden & Creak – New Biome & Dangerous Mob in Update 1.21)

You can obtain resin in several ways, which leads to some fun mechanics:

  • Break a Knarz Heart to get 1 to 3 resin clumps. With Silk Touch, you can harvest the Knarz Heart itself.
  • Resin clumps can be found in Woodland Mansion chests, usually 2 to 4.
  • Resin is automatically produced on pale oak logs when you hit the Knarz.

As you can see, resin is not easy to acquire in bulk without an automatic farm. Depending on the biome size, there are only a limited number of Knarz Hearts in trees. This is especially problematic in Peaceful mode, where you can’t spawn the Knarz. To produce resin, you’ll have to face the Knarz.

Resin uses and resin brick crafting in Minecraft

So why bother farming resin? As mentioned, it’s an excellent building block. Its rich, orange color really pops in almost any build.

And the item is surprisingly versatile:

  • Craft a Block of Resin from 9 clumps.
  • Use the Block of Resin to craft Knarz Hearts (more on that later).
  • Smelt resin in a furnace to get resin bricks.
  • Resin bricks can be crafted into resin brick blocks, and those into slabs, stairs, and walls. You can do this in the stonecutter as well.
  • Get a chiseled resin brick with the Knarz face by combining two slabs.
  • Use the individual bricks to apply armor trims and add orange accents to your gear.

Automatic resin farm in Minecraft: materials, Redstone, and build guide

Resin and its many uses are great for players who like to build with bold colors and are looking for an orange block. A farm is definitely worth it. As explained above, resin is only renewable with the help of the Knarz, which means you’ll need to interact with a hostile mob. The good news is that you can summon it yourself and use it for your purposes.

There are different ways to build a resin farm in Minecraft, but the core mechanic is the same. Use a Knarz Heart to summon a Knarz and hit it so it produces resin. With pistons, you can move logs, which shake off the resin, and then collect it. Our design is expandable, making it great for scaling up your farm.

Materials:

  • Chest and hopper
  • several stacks of building blocks
  • 64 slabs
  • 16 fences
  • 2 observers
  • 1 sticky piston
  • 1 Redstone repeater
  • 2 Redstone dust
  • 4 buttons
  • 4 water buckets
  • 2 pale oak logs
  • 1 Knarz Heart

Step 1: Collection basin for resin and item transport

Collection basin with water flow and hopper for resin farm

To collect the resin, start with a collection basin. We recommend building the farm in the air to better control the Knarz’s spawn behavior. 30 blocks above the ground should be enough.

Place the chest with a hopper on top, where the resin will end up later. At hopper height, build out five blocks in each direction, then raise the outer ring by one block. Fill the corners with water so all items flow toward the center.

Step 2: Summon the Knarz with a Knarz Heart and start resin production

Knarz Heart between pale oaks and Redstone setup

Above the hopper, leave two blocks of air and place the Knarz Heart between two pale oak logs. These are the conditions under which the Knarz can spawn at night. That means the farm only works at night. Keep that in mind.

Tip: It’s best to build the farm during the day or in Peaceful mode so the Knarz doesn’t attack you right away.

The Redstone is straightforward. Place the piston behind the lower log, and put the two observers to the left and right to detect resin formation. To move the piston, place two solid blocks behind the observers and the Redstone repeater behind the piston. Put Redstone dust behind each solid block, and place another solid block between them and the repeater. This briefly nudges the log, shakes off the resin, and washes it into the collection basin.

Step 3: Knarz safety, spawn platform, and anti-spawn measures

Spawn platform secured with slabs and fences in resin farm

To make sure the Knarz spawns correctly and you can collect the resin, take these final precautions:

  • Place four buttons on the upper log so resin only forms below, where the observers can see it.
  • Line the outer wall of the water basin with slabs so the Knarz can’t spawn there.
  • Build a small platform with fences on one side where the Knarz will spawn.

Once it’s night, the Knarz should spawn on the platform (except in Peaceful mode). As long as you look at it, it won’t attack or move. Punch it every five seconds with your fist to produce resin. The observers and piston operate automatically and strip the resin. You can’t kill the Knarz. It disappears at daylight or when you break its Knarz Heart.

Expandable automatic resin farm in Minecraft at night

That’s the automatic farm done. You can expand it by repeating the core setup from Step 2 and adjusting the water basin accordingly. The more Knarz you have, the harder it can be to keep an eye on all of them. Also remember it only spawns at night.

Conclusion: Farm resin and use resin bricks in your builds

Resin is an underrated building block that isn’t easy to find. You’ll need to visit one of the new biomes and deal with the intimidating Knarz. But an automatic farm is not as complicated as it might sound. Resin is created by hitting the Knarz. Then have a piston automatically knock it off, and you can farm it fairly easily.

Rent one of our Minecraft servers and start your automatic resin farm right away. Then you can use unique blocks in your builds and give them a rich orange look.
